20. Sea of Thieves
Kicking off our list of the best Xbox One games to play right now, is action-adventure game, Sea of Thieves.
The game was officially released on March 20, 2018, and was developed by Rare and published by Xbox Game Studios.
Players take on the role of a pirate, that either fly’s solo, or can choose to be part of a crew. The game is played in the first-person perspective and you’ll sail around the world on epic quests hunting for treasure.
Critics praised the game’s style and gameplay upon release, however, other critics said the game was lacking in content, and therefore, challenged the original price tag.
With that being said, Sea of Thieves has managed to build a strong fan base over the years, and even picked up a few awards!
19. Nier: Automata
Nier: Automata is a 2017 action-role playing video game, that’s the sequel to 2010, Nier.
Developed by Platinum Games and Published by Square Enix, Nier: Automata was met with critical acclaim for its story and themes and eventually went on to sell over four million copies worldwide by May 2019.
The game follows a combat android, her companion and a fugitive prototype during a proxy war between alien machines and human-crafted androids. It’s a bit of role-playing and hack and slash all mixed into one!
Nier: Automata was nominated for several industry awards, winning several, including an Audience Award at the 2018 Game Developers Choice Awards.
18. FIFA 19
Next up is FIFA 19, which is probably the best football game known to man!
If you haven’t guessed it already, it’s a football or (soccer) game that allows players to choose their own teams from around the world and includes the UEFA club competitions, which the previous versions did not.
Upon release, FIFA 19 opened at number one on the software sales charts in the UK and went on to be nominated for several industry awards.
17. Devil May Cry 5
Devil May Cry 5 is the next best Xbox One game on our list.
It’s an action-adventure hack and slash video game that’s the fifth instalment in the mainline Devil May Cry Series.
The game was developed and published by Capcom and, upon release in March 2019, received positive reviews from critics.
The game follows three warriors with demonic powers as they try to stop the Demon King, Urizen, from destroying the human world.
It takes place roughly five years after Devil May Cry 4 and the game managed to sell over two million copies in just under two weeks after its release.
16. Ori and the Blind Forest
Developed by Moon Studios and published by Microsoft Studios, Ori and the Blind Forest was released for Xbox One in March 2015.
Ori is a platform-adventure video game where players control Ori, a very small white guardian spirit and Sein, who’s the light and eyes of the Forest’s Spirit Tree.
As a player, you’ll need to complete different puzzles in order to progress through the game.
Ori and the Blind Forest received critical acclaim upon release for its gameplay, art style, musical score and environmental design.
It was nominated for several industry awards, winning Xbox Game of the Year at the Golden Joy Stick Awards in 2015.
15. Gears of War 4
Gears of War 4 is a third-person shooter video game that was released worldwide in October 2016.
Despite its name, it’s the fifth instalment in the GOW series, and, upon release, received widely positive reviews for its game combat and visuals.
The Xbox One game was the third best-selling retail game in its week of release, in the United Staes, and the second best selling game in the United Kingdom.
Gears of War 4 was nominated for a number of industry awards but is yet to win anything official.
14. Titanfall 2
The fourteenth best Xbox One game to play is Titanfall 2.
It’s a first-person shooter that was developed by Respawn Entertainment, published by Electronic Arts and the sequel to 2014, Titanfall.
Titanfall 2 was released worldwide in 2016 and was met with critical acclaim.
Set in a science-fiction universe, players control Titans, which are mech-style exoskeletons, and are tasked with stopping the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation from launching a superweapon, which threatens to destroy the Militia planet, Harmony.
Titanfall 2 was nominated for several awards and won the Critics’ Choice and Best Online Multiplayer Award at the 2016 Golden Joystick Awards and Game Critics Awards.
Fortnite is an online video game, developed by Epic Games and released in 2017.
It’s an interesting game as it’s available in three different game modes: Save the world, Battle Royale and Fortnite Creative.
The first two modes received mainly positive feedback from critics, however, the third mode, Battle Royale, became a huge success and pulled in over 125 million players in under one year.
Fortnite has been nominated for countless awards and most recently won the award for Best Ongoing Game at the 2019 Game Awards.
12. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain is a stealth game that was released in 2015, developed by Kojima and published by Konami.
It’s the ninth instalment in the MGS series and was set nine years after the events of the Ground Zeros, which was a stand-alone prologue, released the year before.
The Phantom Pain received critical acclaim upon its release, with particular focus being drawn to its mechanics and interconnected systems.
It shipped three million physical copies within its first five days of release and managed to gross $179 million on day one!
11. Apex Legends
Now, Apex Legends has done remarkably well considering it was released without doing any prior marketing or announcing its release.
It was developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts, and, the battle-royale style game is completely free to play.
It was released for Xbox One on February 4, 2019, and is now in its fourth season. The objective of the game is pretty straight forward, kill all other teams to be the last team standing.
By July 2019, Apex Legends had accumulated approximately 8-10 million players a week, and that grew to around 70 million players worldwide by October 2019.
Apex legends has been nominated for and won, multiple industry awards.
10. Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2 is the sequel to 2012’s, Dishonored and is an action-adventure game developed by Arkane Studios.
It’s set in the fictional city of Karnaca, and players choose between playing as Empress Emily Kalwin or her farther and royal protector, Corvo Attano, as they attempt to reclaim their throne from the evil witch, Delilah Copperspoon.
The game was released on Xbox One on 11 November 2016 and was met with a positive reception from critics.
It won the award for Best Action/Adventure game at The Game Awards 2016 and for Costume Design at the NAVGTR Awards 2017.
9. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard
Coming in at number nine is Resident Evil 7: Biohazard.
Probably the scariest and jumpiest game on the list, Resident Evil is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom.
The Xbox One video game was released in January 2017 and goes back to its survival horror roots, choosing to focus on exploration, instead of just straight-up blood and gore like Resident Evil 5 & 6.
It was the first full-length game to use Capcom’s in house RE Engine, and by December 2018, it had sold over six million copies worldwide.
In 2018, Resident Evil 7 won VR Game of the Year at the SXSW Game Awards.
8. Assassins Creed Odyssey
Assassins Creed Odyssey is an action-role playing video game that’s the successor to 2017’s Assassin’s Creed Origins.
It was developed by Ubisoft Quebec and published by Ubisoft and tells a fictional history of the Peloponnesian War, between Sparta and Athens. Players can choose either a male or female mercenary to fight in the battle to reunite their family.
The game was released worldwide for Xbox One on October 5, 2018, and was met with favourable reviews overall.
After being nominated for several industry awards, Assassins Creed Odyssey won the Best Artistic Design Award at the 2018 Titanium Awards.
7. Halo 5: Guardians
Halo 5: Guardians is a first-person shooter video game that was released on the Xbox One worldwide on October 27, 2015.
The game was developed by 343 industries and published by Microsoft Studios.
It follows two fireteams of human supersoldiers, the Blue Team and Osiris, tracking their journey as one team leader goes AWAL and the other is sent to track him down and bring him home.
The game was announced by Microsoft at E3 2013 and went on to gross over $500 million in its first week of release, including hardware.
6. Fallout 4
Fallout 4 is the fifth instalment in the Fallout series and was released worldwide on the Xbox One on November 10, 2015.
It’s an action role-playing game that’s set in an open-world post-apocalyptic environment known as “The Commonwealth”.
The game takes place in the year 2287, 210 years after the “The Great War”, which was the catalyst for the nuclear devastation across the United States.
Fallout 4 received mainly all positive reviews from critics, with comments being focused on player freedom, word depth, amount of content and the soundtrack.
It generated approximately $750 million within the first 24 hours of its launch.
5. Monster Hunter World: Iceborne
“Iceborne” is the major expansion to Monster Hunter World and was released on September 6, 2019, for the Xbox One.
The expansion brings new maps, hunting areas, monsters, quests and extra story content to make the already awesome game even better.
According to Metacritic, Iceborne has received “universal acclaim” with critics focusing on the sheer size and scale of the expansion.
After Iceborne was released, Capcom reported global shipments, including digital and retail copies, exceeding 2.5 million a week, with the total sales for Iceborne reaching around 4 million by January 2020.

Gears 5 is a third-person shooter Xbox One game that was developed by The Coalition and published by Xbox Game Studios.
The game was released in September 2019 and is the sixth instalment in the Gears of War series. However, it’s also the second Gears of War not to be developed by Epic Games.
In this instalment, players focus entirely on Kait Diaz, an outsider from the Locust descent, and are tasked with trying to uncover the origins of her family and the locust.
The game received favourable reviews upon release and was played by more than 3 million people in its first weekend!
3. Forza Horizon 4
Forza Horizon 4 is a racing video game that was released on the Xbox One in October 2018.
It was developed by Playground Games and published by Microsoft Studios.
Set in an open world fictionalised version of Great Britain, players can choose from 670 licensed cars and use the route creator to create their own races.
Some of the regions included in the game are Edinburgh, the Lake District and the Cotswolds.
Players also have the opportunity to buy in-game houses, which will unlock new perks, items and cars.
Forza Horizon 4 received universal acclaim, for the Xbox One version, and by August 2019, Forza had accumulated over 12 million players!
2. Red Dead Redemption 2
The second best Xbox One game to play right now is Red Dead Redemption 2.
This 2018 action-adventure game, developed and published by Rockstar Games, is the prequel to Red Dead Redemption, released in 2010, and is the third entry in the Red Dead series.
Outlaw, Arthur Morgan, who’s a member of the Van der Linde Gang tries to deal with the realisation that the Wild West is in decline, whilst also trying to stay alive as a number of government forces and rival gangs are trying to bury him six feet under.
The game is presented in both a first and third-person perspective, and players are able to roam freely throughout the interactive open world.
Red Dead Redemption 2 received universal acclaim from critics and won several Game of the Year awards.

The best Xbox One game to play right now is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Released in 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is an action role-playing game based on the Witcher series of fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski.
It was developed and published by CD Projekt and players control Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter that’s searching for his missing adopted daughter, who’s on the run from an evil force called Wild Hunt, who’s determined to capture her to use her powers.
Players use weapons and magic abilities to battle the games many dangers and complete interesting quests in exchange for points and gold.
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt received praise for its gameplay, world design, combat, visuals and narrative. It’s been cited as one of the greatest video games ever made and won numerous Game of the Year awards.
Before being released, 1.5 million people pre-ordered the game and 20 million copies were shipped by June 2019!
