Miguel Angel Cotto Vazquez was born on the 29th of October, 1980, in Rhode Island.

Cotto was born to Puerto Rican parents and relocated to Caguas, Puerto Rico. Cotto began boxing as a child to help lose weight, not anticipating it to end up being his career path. He was taken to the Bairoa Gym in Caguas.

Cotto participated in many international tournaments. These include The 1998 Junior World Championships that took place in Buenos Aires, where he finished in second place while competing in the Lightweight division.

In 1999, Cotto competed in the Pan American Games that took place in Canada. He fought once in a loss to Dana Laframboise of Canada by points with a final score of 2 – 5. 



Through his amateur boxing career started in the lightweight and light welterweight division, he gained the distinction of being the first and only Puerto Rican to win titles in 4 different weight classes and is the current WBC & The Ring World Middleweight Champion.

He started his professional career in 2001. In 2004, he defeated Kelson Pinto for the WBO junior welterweight championship. Cotto defended the title successfully a total of six times. 

Cotto has had quite a few notable matches and is regarded as one of the best fighters in the ring. One of his most memorable fights was in 2012 with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This was one of his most memorable fights.
