Miguel Angel Cotto Vazquez was born on the 29th of October, 1980, in Rhode Island.

Cotto was born to Puerto Rican parents and relocated to Caguas, Puerto Rico. Cotto began boxing as a child to help lose weight, not anticipating it to end up being his career path. He was taken to the Bairoa Gym in Caguas.

He started his professional career in 2001. In 2004, he defeated Kelson Pinto for the WBO junior welterweight championship. Cotto defended the title successfully a total of six times. 

Cotto has had quite a few notable matches and is regarded as one of the best fighters in the ring. One of his most memorable fights was in 2012 with Floyd Mayweather Jr. This was one of his most memorable fights. 

His second most famous match was with Antonio Margarito in 2011 that brought him close to $5 million with the additional PPV Profits.

Cotto has earned over $20 million in previous fights predating 2009 against many notable boxers such as Michael Jennings, Manny Pacquiao, and Antonio Margarito.
