The 10 Most Common Birthdays

What are the most common birthdays?

Well, it turns out the holiday season for Americans is a prevalent time to conceive, but not the most ideal for giving birth.

So, thanks to the past two decades of real American birth data, and a popular blog post from Matt Stiles, we’ve put together a list of the 10 most common birthdays in America and highlighted reasons why they’re so common.

Here’s a list of the 10 most common birthdays.

The 10 Most Common Birthdays

The list of birthdays and figures mentioned below has been compiled from various sources around the web, such as The Daily Viz.

Based on two decades of research on American birthdays, averaged by month and day, these are the 10 most common birthdays.

  1. 9th September
  2. 19th September
  3. 12th September
  4. 17th September
  5. 10th September
  6. 7th September
  7. 20th September
  8. 15th September
  9. 16th September
  10. 18th September

The Most Common Birth Month

According to research from Matt Stiles, September is the most common birth month for Americans, based on real birth data from the U.S. National Health Center for Health Statistics and the U.S. Social Security Administration.

The data shows that the top ten most common birthdays in the United States fall between September 9th and September 20th.

Why Is It So Common?

Is it a coincidence? Well, not likely, as there are a few explanations that can shed light on why a large number of birthdays fall in September.

Firstly, if you rewind the clock around 38 weeks, then you’ll see that the month of conception is December, which, for many Americans, is the “holiday” season.

So, it makes sense that couples will choose to conceive during this period, as taking time off typically leads to reductions in stress levels and increased happiness.

Secondly, males tend to have higher quality sperm during the winter months compared to the warmer months of the summer, according to a study by Dr. Carares about Obstetrics and Gynecology

Also, Dr. Carares claims that “changes in daylight length might make an ovum’s environment better suited for sperm.”

So, if you combine these theories with the fact that a lot of people would prefer to stay in bed and “snuggle” during the winter months, then it’s pretty clear why December has become the most common month to convince a child.

The Least Common Birthdays

If your birthday falls on Christmas Day, then you officially have the least common birthday.

It’s not that difficult to see why this is, as if the majority of people in America are conceiving in December, then it stands to reason that the same month would see the least amount of birthdays.

If we also apply the same logic, we used to determine the most common month of conception, then rolling back the clock approximately 38-40 weeks takes us to April/May, or springtime in America.

So, if our bodies are more geared up to reproduce during the winter months, then it’s likely that they’re also inclined to slow down and unwind during the warmer months of spring and summer.

Also, conceiving a child around this time would mean that the baby would be due in December, which is generally filled with all sorts of stressful festive events and is a hectic time for most working professionals.

Other birthdays that aren’t very common are New Years Day, Thanksgiving, and the Fourth of July.

Summary

We hope you enjoyed our list of the 10 most common birthdays.

In the grand scheme of things, the day you’re born doesn’t play any part in the type of life you’ll lead, or give you an advantage in any way.

So, if you find yourself expecting a baby in either the most or least popular months of the year, then remember that as long as you’re child is healthy, that’s all that matters.
