How to Sound Persuasive Without Preparation

“Yes, man is mortal, but that would be only half the trouble. The worst of it is that he’s sometimes unexpectedly mortal — there’s the trick!” – Mikhail Bulgakov

How many times have you analyzed your speech after giving it and found a plenty of more felicitous words, persuasive expressions, and effective ways to gain your companion over? I bet, thousands of times.

And you said to yourself that next time you will be prepared. But usually next time you need to convince the audience about something happens all of a sudden. So, you fail again and again.

Sure, when you have an opportunity to present your ideas in front of a big audience, you could prepare in advance, write your speech, polish your speaking skills.

But often you catch the chance to speak with people and convince them about something at the conferences, business breakfasts, at the parties. And if you would like people to accept your point of view, you need to sound persuasively anytime and anywhere.

5 Tips to Sound Persuasive Without Preparing

Fortunately, it is easy to learn. Communication skills are just skills. You are able to get them. Let’s see, which tricks will help you to persuade any person you want.

Here are 5 tips to help you sound persuasive without preparing beforehand:

1. Use Persuasive Words

Have I told you it is easy?

There are words which you should and should not use during your conversation.

According to different researches, one of the most persuasive words is “You”. People like to hear about themselves. Their attention increases when they hear this word, they start listening to you carefully and accurately.

However, use it wisely, as abuse could have an opposite effect.

Don’t use many slang words, shoptalk. Be simple. Use short sentences and common words.
Tell the absolute truth. Avoid combinations like “I think”, “I guess”, etc.

These words give your companion a right to argue with you. But if you present your thoughts as well-known fact your audience will take it suchlike too.

2. Repeat

Express your idea. Then repeat it. Then say it one more time.

Have you heard about the theory of “3 yes”? If you want somebody to say “Yes” to your request, just ask him or her three simple definitely “yes” questions before.

it’s exactly the same in this situation…

Our brain is a lazy guy. It likes to follow simple rules and use ready-made templates instead of creating something new and fresh. So, words that were repeated many times become verity to it.

3. Make it Personal

If you could mention your companion’s dog or hobby, do it. Talk about your audience needs, appeal to their emotions.

If you have your own experience in such field — excellent! Share it. People like to realize that others have the same routine as they do.

Look into one pair of eyes every moment. Make strong connections. Ask people questions. Involve them into a discussion. It makes them feel your thoughts are their own ones. And it is the best way to reach your goal if you want to persuade somebody.

4. Let your Body Speak

Body language is both your loyalest comrade and worst enemy.

If you don’t take it into a consideration, it will betray you when you will less expect it and set to zero all your efforts. No words or emotions will help. But if you use it right, the effect is fantastic.

During conversation keep your posture straight. But not too much. If your neck is strained, it tells the audience you don’t believe in your own words. Be relaxed, but tight.

Gesture, if you do it usually. Don’t gesture, if you don’t do it. Don’t try to act completely different, but try to avoid such motions as fingers knocking on the table, scratching the nose, touching your haircut up, etc.

They all mean you are flustered.

5. Refer to Authority Sources

The influence of society on a person’s decisions is huge. Even if we deny it, we act under its pressure. Refer to authorized sources.

Say, that it is not only your opinion. It was mentioned by some famous person in your field, or it is proven by research, etc. Voice of the community can be more imposing than you could imagine.

A quick recap on what I’ve mentioned above:

  1. Use persuasive words
  2. Repeat
  3. Make it personal
  4. Let your body speak
  5. Refer to authority sources

Sure, you won’t become an admirable speaker straight away. You need to learn to put these skills into practice.

Moreover, you need to make these habits a part of you. As if you will hectically try to refresh all those tricks in your memory and use them fussily, forget about credibility.

Returning to the epigraph, be mischance the necessity to be eloquent appears unexpectedly. And yes, considering the common fear of public speaking, sometimes it could be compared with death.

Do you want to get some near-death experience?

Then forget about everything you’ve read. Those, who prefer successful live experience and dream to always persuade people, try the above tips and be ready to bring your audience round here and now, without trepidation and preparing, but with satisfaction thoughts after.
