His performance helped him secure leading roles in 1988’s Cocktail, 1989’s Born on the Fourth of July, and 1990’s Days of Thunder. During this time, the amount of money Cruise could command per movie increased from $2 million to $9 million.

Mission: Impossible Salary

Due to his producer credits, Tom Cruise has earned a lot of money from the Mission: Impossible franchise. He was estimated to have earned $220 million for the first three movies. While most reports on his salary for the later films only estimate $13 million/movie, this is likely just his base salary.

War of the Worlds Salary

One of Cruise’s highest single movie earnings is for his lead role in 2005’s War of the Worlds. Once backend points were considered, he earned roughly $100 million from the film.

Estimated Net Worth

When we first discussed Tom Cruise’s worth in 2019, it was estimated to be $570 million. Since then, the release of a long-awaited Top Gun sequel and the latest Mission: Impossible film has helped Cruise bring in at least another $26 million in base salary.

How Does Tom Cruise Spend His Money?

Highest-Grossing Movies

Six films in the Mission: Impossible franchise made it onto Cruise’s top ten highest-grossing list, but none grossed the highest. Mission Impossible – Fallout (2018) grossed $792 million globally, followed by $695 million for Ghost Protocol (2011) and $683 million for Rogue Nation (2015). The most recent release, Dead Reckoning Part One, only grossed $568 million despite having a $291 million budget. The only film in the franchise that didn’t make the list was Mission: Impossible III, which took in $398 million worldwide.

The highest-grossing film of Tom Cruise’s career was Top Gun: Maverick (2022), which grossed $1.5 billion at the box office while costing $170 million to produce. The other movies on the list include War of the Worlds ($604 million), The Last Samurai ($455 million), and The Mummy ($409 million).

It would be remiss if we didn’t mention the number one performing film of Cruise’s career regarding return on investment. His precious cars are carefully parked in His 900+ square-foot garage, with a 250-square-foot second-story pool house above, which cost him approximately $170,000.

Surprisingly, only three of Hart’s top ten-grossing movies involve leading roles without voiceover work. The other seven are from cameos, supporting roles, or voiceover work in The Secret Life of Pets franchise. All three lead acting roles involved Hart working with co-star Dwayne Johnson.

While we have precise salary information for approximately 26 films Julie Roberts has starred in, we also have estimates of her combined annual income history from all sources. From the figures above, it’s clear that for Roberts, the early 2000s were the peak of her career, with her earning as much as $50 million in 2000. She was somewhat absent from the industry in the mid-2000s, which led to a drop in earnings, down to an estimated $8 million/year for 2005 and 2006.

Between 2010 and 2018, Roberts typically earned between $12 million and $20 million annually, thanks to impressive paydays from Eat, Pray, Love, Mother’s Day, and Wonder. However, she was no longer commanding the $20+ million per film figure she used to.

In the late 1980s, Julia Roberts earned under six figures per film, with paydays of $50,000 for Mystic Pizza (1988) and $90,000 for Steel Magnolias (1989). A year later, when she starred in Pretty Woman, which was arguably the film that launched her mainstream career, Roberts reportedly earned $300,000. The film’s success dramatically increased her earning potential, and before long, she received a $1 million payday for starring in Sleeping With the Enemy. That same year, Roberts also reportedly earned $3 million from Dying Young and $7 million from Hook.

In the mid-late 1990s, Roberts reached a stage where she was being paid upwards of $10 million per film. Her first recorded eight-figure payday came in 1997, when she earned $12 million for My Best Friend’s Wedding. To close out the decade, she received $11 million for Conspiracy Theory (1997), $15 million for Notting Hill (1999), and $17 million for Runaway Bride (1999).

As we briefly mentioned above, the early 2000s were some of the best years of Julia Roberts’ career. This is primarily due to her joining the $20+ million club with roles in Erin Brockovich, The Mexican, and Closer. During this time, her highest-recorded payday was $25 million for starring in Mona Lisa Smile (2003).

There was a short lull in the mid-2000s, but Roberts returned with a $15 million payday for 2009’s Duplicity, followed by $10 million for starring in Eat, Pray Love a year later. From then on, her earnings dropped to between $3 million and $6 million per film.

However, she recently made another comeback in 2023, starring in Leave the World Behind, for which she reportedly received $25 million. This brings Roberts’ earnings for all of her publicly known salaries, if we include her Homecoming salary (more on that below), to a total of $266.4 million. Of course, many films are missing from the list, so the actual number should be significantly higher.

Homecoming Salary

According to a report from Variety, Roberts was paid an estimated $650,000 per episode to star in Homecoming. They initially estimated her salary at $600,000 per episode in 2018 but increased this figure in their 2019 report. The show aired ten episodes in 2018, earning her $6 million.

Highest-Grossing Movies

The majority of Roberts’ highest-grossing films came between 1999 and 2001, the same period during which she made the most money. Those films include Ocean’s Eleven (2001), which grossed $451 million; Notting Hill (1999), which grossed $364 million; Runaway Bride (1999), which grossed $309 million; and Erin Brockovich (2000), which grossed $256 million.

However, none of those films performed better than 1990’s Pretty Woman, which grossed $463 million. The film only cost $14 million to produce, which gave it the highest ROI of Roberts’ career. Other films to make the list include Ocean’s Twelve ($363 million), Wonder ($315 million), and Hook ($301 million).

Here’s a complete list of Julia Roberts’ ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. Pretty Woman – $463 million (1990)
  2. Ocean’s Eleven – $451 million (2001)
  3. Notting Hill – $364 million (1999)
  4. Ocean’s Twelve – $363 million (2004)

  10. Valentine’s Day – $217 million (2010)
