Early Life

Joseph Eric Thornton was born July 2, 1979, in Ontario, Canada.

Thorton spent his childhood playing minor hockey with the St. Thomas Travellers in his hometown. He skated for the Travelers in “AA” hockey and won an Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) championship in peewee.

He participated in six games with the Junior B St. Thomas Stars of the Ontario Hockey Association during his early years, recording eight points in six games as a 14-year-old.

Thornton joined the Stars full-time the next season and scored 104 points in 50 games as a 15-year-old before being picked second overall in the 1995 OHL Draft by the Sault St. Marie Greyhounds.

Career

While at the Greyhounds, Joe scored an amazing 76 points in his rookie season and was named the OHL and CHL Rookie of the Year.

Thornton increased his stats to 41 goals and 122 points the next season, finishing second in league scoring, and was nominated to the OHL Second All-Star Team.

Joe was selected as the first overall pick by the Boston Bruins in the 1997 NHL Entry Draft and played with them for seven seasons.

He moved to the San Jose Sharks in 2005, playing 14 seasons, including four seasons as club captain with a run to the 2016 Stanley Cup Finals.

Joe then traveled to Europe and played with HC Davos of the Swiss National League A during the unfortunate 2004 to 2005 NHL lockout.

He was a member of a line that included fellow NHL players Rick Nash and Niklas Hagman, helping HC Davos win both the championship and the Spengler Cup.

Joe has actively represented Canada on multiple occasions, playing in championship teams in both the 1997 World Junior Championships and the 2004 World Cup of Hockey.

He also earned a gold medal while playing for Team Canada at the 2010 Winter Olympics and then again at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

After re-signing with the Bruins in 2005, Joe’s three-year, $20 million contract saw him start the season in top form after struggling for a few seasons.

But it wasn’t to last and he was traded to the San Jose Sharks at the end of 2005 – a move that saw him stay for 15 years.

He joined Dan Boyle, and Danny Heatley at the iconic club, becoming one of the richest hockey players in the world and ending his first season as the MVP.

Thornton received a permanent alternate captaincy before the 2006–07 season began, but struggled due to a toe injury that would not heal until January 2007.

He was photographed by his wife, signing his Maple Leaf contract sitting on his lawnmower, which resulted in him becoming an instant internet meme.

Highlights

Thornton and the Toronto Maple Leafs agreed to a one-year, $700,000 deal in October 2020 – not the most lucrative contract at the time.
