Roman Hamrlík was born April 12, 1974, in Gottwaldov, Czechoslovakia.
Little is known about his early life, although he has a brother who also plays ice hockey who supported and encouraged him to play. Hamrlik began his pro hockey career as a teenager in the former Czechoslovakia, excelling in the local league in Zlin.
However, when he turned 18 years old, it was decided that he would go to North America as his country split into two sovereign nations on December 31, 1992.
The independent countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia replaced what was once a unified, communist regime. From 1989, the citizens of the Czech Republic lost a lot of value due to inflation and the changes in their new free market economy.

The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Hamrlk first overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft from ZPS Zln. He played as a defenseman for his team, frequently taking on an offensive role, notably on the power play.
Roman was known as the “power play quarterback” because, due to his offensive prowess, he frequently ran the offense during a power play. Hamrlík would move to North America right after being selected in the draft to play for the Lightning in the 1992–93 season.
