Coaches Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson scouted him, and both eventually went on to train him as a pro with the Cowboys.

Troy picked the University of Oklahoma, but he departed after Switzer implemented the wishbone formation in the Oklahoma offense, stressing the rushing game over Troy’s great passing abilities.

Aikman went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a transfer student and had to sit out the 1986 season.

In his final two years at UCLA, he guided his team to a record, including playoff triumphs in the Aloha Bowl and the Cotton Bowl.

In his senior year, he was selected All-American and finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy, college football’s most coveted award.

Troy was offered the chance to play baseball with The New York Mets but decided to participate in the 1989 NFL Drafts instead.

A few seasons later, he became the first quarterback to have three straight 3,000-yard seasons in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.

One serious incident included being hit by a linebacker, LaVar Arrington, and suffering his tenth concussion in the whole of his career.

With the constant injuries sustained and the severity of multiple concussions, Troy decided to announce his retirement from football in 2001.

Troy played for one of the richest teams in the NFL and along with players like Ezekiel Elliott, Leighton Vander Esch, and Tyron Smith, contributed to the Cowboys legend.

He was going to sign a deal with the San Diego Chargers but changed his mind due to a back injury.

Rather than leaving football altogether, Troy became a commentator on Fox’s NFC telecast.

He set a record with a game-winning touchdown against the University of South Florida, earning him a reputation as a versatile defensive player.

In 2015, he set a world record for the standing long jump at the NFL Scouting Combine and was recognized as a top defensive prospect.

Joining The Dallas Cowboys

The Dallas Cowboys drafted Jones in the first round, 27th overall, in the 2015 NFL Draft and played for the team from 2015 to 2019.

He started his career as a cornerback and later transitioned to safety. He was named Second-team All-Pro in 2018 and made the Pro Bowl that year.

He’s posted some impressive NFL career statistics, including 66 tackles in 2016, 1 interception each in 2017 and 2018, and 140 passes defensed in 2019.

Renegotiating His Contract

The 2021 season didn’t get off to an excellent start when Jones discovered he was no longer the highest-paid cornerback. After he requested a trade, the team capitulated and restructured his contract to entice Jones back onto the field.

Unfortunately, Jones picked up a couple of injuries and struggled a bit throughout the season with his quad and Achilles problems.

He missed the Atlanta Falcons game, finishing the season with 16 starts at left cornerback with 58 tackles, ten passes defensed, and one forced fumble.

Injury Woes

After missing the entire 2022 season due to left Achilles surgery, Jones has warned athletes against taking certain medications and injections and recommended outside advice.

While he says that he enjoyed playing in the NFL, he can no longer run and jump due to the injuries he sustained while playing.

In March 2023, the Miami Dolphins designated Jones for release after he failed a physical exam, citing salary cap reasons.
