Early Life

Little is known about his early life, although he has a brother who also plays ice hockey who supported and encouraged him to play.

Hamrlik began his pro hockey career as a teenager in the former Czechoslovakia, excelling in the local league in Zlin.

However, when he turned 18 years old, it was decided that he would go to North America as his country split into two sovereign nations on December 31, 1992.

The independent countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia replaced what was once a unified, communist regime. From 1989, the citizens of the Czech Republic lost a lot of value due to inflation and the changes in their new free market economy.

Career

The Tampa Bay Lightning selected Hamrlk first overall in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft from ZPS Zln.

He played as a defenseman for his team, frequently taking on an offensive role, notably on the power play.

Roman was known as the “power play quarterback” since he frequently ran the offense during a power play due to his offensive prowess.

Hamrlík would move to North America right after being selected in the draft to play for the Lightning in the 1992–93 season.

In 1992, the Tampa Bay Lightning had the option of choosing between Alexei Yashin and Hamrlik.  They thought that they were getting a defenseman that could be their franchise player.

Unfortunately, it didn’t work out well for Roman and he was traded a little while later.

He achieved career highs in goals, assists, and points in 1995–96. Midway through the 1997–98 season, Hamrlk was traded to the Edmonton Oilers after spending five and a half seasons with the team.

Later, in the summer of 2000, Hamrlk joined the New York Islanders as a free agent, where he would match his career-high of 16 goals during the next season.

He achieved a plus-minus career high of +22 in 2006–07. Once more a free agent, Hamrlk agreed to a four-year, $22 million deal with the Montreal Canadiens on July 2, 2007.

After four uneventful seasons, Roman transferred to the Washington Capitals but received little game time, in part due to the lockout.

The Capitals ultimately decided to put him on waiver on March 5, 2013, and on March 6, 2013, the New York Rangers grabbed him.

Roman Hamrlík’s Career Earnings

Originally from Zlin, in the Czech Republic, Roman retired as the 33rd longest-tenured player on the NHL’s all-time games played list.

After his retirement in 2013, Roman told everyone that though he grew up in a communist country, he had always dreamed of one day, playing in the NHL.

Now that he is retired and has been away from the game for so long, it is difficult to estimate Roman Hamrlík’s annual income, but he is said to earn over $1 million in 2022.

He didn’t know what he wanted to do after retiring from hockey, so he took a 3-year chef’s diploma in the Czech Republic and is now qualified.

Roman was one of many eastern European ice hockey players who tried their luck in the NHL.

Players like  Alexei Kovalev, Ilya Kovalchuk, and  Evgeni Malkin made their way to America and Canada to try out in the greatest ice hockey league in the world.

Personal Life

Martin Hamrlík, Roman’s older brother, was selected by the Hartford Whalers in the 1991 NHL Draft but never played professionally.

Martin Hamrlík, who primarily played for PSG Zlin, decided to call an end to his career in 2013.

Career

Richie Hawtin is widely regarded as one of the leading pioneers of the techno music scene since it came to prominence in the 1990s.

His stark, pared-back sound has influenced many notable DJs and producers over the years and helped develop the EDM scene.

Influenced by Detroit house and techno, Hawtin began his career early, producing music from the late 1980s before launching his first label.

Key Role In the 1990s Techno Music Scene

In 1989, Richie Hawtin formed his first record label, Plus 9, using the platform to release a series of techno tracks under the alias F.U.S.E.

While some of these releases were successful in the underground music scene, it was his moniker Plastikman that launched his profile.

Along with fellow UK-based Carl Cox, his tracks dominated the techno clubs throughout the 1990s and led to many respectable club appearances.

Throughout this early period, Hawtin worked with some of the biggest names in techno, including Robert Hood, Carl Craig, and Jeff Mills.

Notable Tech Projects

Two years later, Hawtin launched a music technology platform called PLAYdifferently, collaborating with the award-winning Andy Rigby-Jones.

Their Model 1 mixer has been widely used by DJs in the industry, with Carl Cox and Loco Dice among its notable early adopters.

He continued his work on technology with the launch of Plus 8 Equities, a fund designed to assist startups looking to enter the field.

Fellow UK-based DJ Pete Tong was also involved in the project, which worked to advance the development of cutting-edge music technology.

Hawtin’s most recent investment came in 2019, with the release of the Plus 8 Equities application, designed to encourage fan-based mashups.

The platform also allows users to toggle through various camera angles of live performances to use for editing and reconstruction.

“Bringing a direct connection between entering. and MINUS, Maceo Plex delivers his CONJURE TWO EP that represents both the stripped-down sound of MINUS and the atmosphere of entering Ibiza!” – Richie Hawtin

“In the first demos at Hardwax, we really had to think about the EQing. Half the room wanted a standard low/mid/hi, half wanted something more innovative. We were 100K of our own money in and thought fuck it, let’s keep what’s different. The EQ’s were the heart of what made it different.” – Richie Hawtin
