England National Team Salary

When Capello became manager of the England national team in 2008, his salary was reported at £6 million per year, roughly $12 million at the time. Fabio managed the team for a total of four years, earning £24 million, which should have equated to $48 million, but the pound crashed in 2009. As such, his £24 million likely amounted to approximately $40 million overall.

Russian National Team Contract & Controversy

Following his stint with England, Fabio Capello signed a contract with the Russian Football Union to manage the country’s national team. This deal was initially two years long, but eventually became a six-year deal, worth €7 million per year ($8 million), for a total base salary of €42 million ($48 million). Capello would also receive performance bonuses based on the team qualifying for the World Cup and the UEFA European Football Championship. This contract was questionable, as it was linked to two offshore companies, one of which was allegedly involved in a major money laundering scandal. Capello’s son, who also doubles as his lawyer, stated that he had no idea why Fabio’s name appeared on the document.

This agreement stated that the first company, Chestersen Limited, would pay the second company, Faro Management Limited, €10 million ($11.2 million) over the period of Capello’s four-year extension to provide marketing and advertising services for the manager. An official investigation was reportedly launched, although the outcome is unknown.

Jiangsu Suning Contract & Salary

In 2017, when Fabio Capello joined the Chinese Super League team, Jiangsu Suning, his deal was reportedly worth €20 million ($23.4 million) over two years, thereby earning him €10 million ($11.7 million) per year.

Early Coaching Career

Nick Saban was hired as an assistant at Kent State and later worked as an assistant coach in NCAA Division I-A at various schools throughout the 1970s and 1980s. 

After 1987, when he spent time at Michigan State, Kent State declined to hire Saban as their head coach, and he was instead hired by the Houston Oilers. Following a stint with the Oilers, Nick Saban was hired by the University of Toledo, and he helped the Rockets find success. With him as their coach, the team became the co-champions of the Mid-American Conference, though Saban resigned after only one season. He then became the NFL’s defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, a position he held for four seasons. 

In 1995, Saban became the head coach of Michigan State, and he helped them reach the bowl games three consecutive times. Saban left Michigan in 2000, but not before the Spartans earned the most wins in a season since 1965. At this point, Nick Saban had gradually become one of the most influential figures in football. 

LSU Tigers

In 2000, Nick Saban became the head coach of LSU, although his first season with the team was marred by losses. However, he returned strong in 2001, leading the team to an SEC Championship and Sugar Bowl Victory. 

The LSU Tigers continued performing strongly under Saban’s leadership and, in 2003, set a single-season record with 13 wins. After the 2004 season, Saban left to coach the Miami Dolphins, and he helped the team finish with a 9-7 record. 

In 2006, Saban almost selected Drew Brees for the Dolphins but traded for Daunte Culpepper, who ultimately spent the season on injured reserve. After that blunder, Saban had his first losing season as a head coach but was quickly hired by Alabama in 2007 to lead the Crimson Tide.

Alabama Crimson Tide

Initial Contract (2007 – 2010)

Saban’s head coaching role at the Alabama Crimson Tide is responsible for generating the bulk of his income. When he first signed on as the team’s head coach in 2007, he was given an eight-year, $32 million contract that would have paid him an average annual salary of $4 million. In 2007, he reportedly earned $3.5 million, followed by $3.75 million in 2008. When the team won the National Championship in 2009, Nick’s stock went up. He earned $4.1 million for the year and then negotiated a brand new contract.

Contract Extensions

Saban’s new agreement increased his salary to approximately $4.9 million per season from 2010 to 2013. In 2014, Nick signed yet another long-term extension, which pushed his annual base salary to $6.9 million. The deal was expected to see him through until 2022. Midway through the contract, Saban began receiving numerous bonuses from National Titles, SEC Titles, Coach of the Year, and Academic bonuses, which pushed his total earnings over $7 million per year.
