Introduction
Lil Wayne is an American professional rapper and entrepreneur with an estimated net worth of $170 Million.
Wayne is one of the richest rappers in the world. He started achieving success in the rap game when he was only 9 years old. This article talks a little about his life and career and how he managed to make all that money by the age of 38.
Quick Facts
- Sold 117 million records in the United States
- Grossed almost $100 million in revenue from concerts/tours
- Sold Young Money Masters catalog for over $100 million to Universal Music
- Sued Cash Money Records for $51 million in 2015
Early Life
Dwayne was born in New Orleans on the 27th of September 1982. His mother was 19 when she had Wayne, and his father abandoned their family when Wayne was only 2 years old.
It’s safe to say that Lil Wayne’s childhood was very, very different to most. He wrote his very first rap song when he was only eight years old and accidentally shot himself with a 9mm handgun when he was only 9. Carter was an honor student at McMain Magnet School, but he dropped out at only 14 to focus on his musical career.
Career
In 1996, Carter joined the Hot Boys along with rappers Juvenile, B.G., and Turk. He was only 15 years old, making him the youngest group member at the time.
3 years later, Lil Wayne went solo, and released his debut album ‘The Block is Hot’, which was a major success, reaching platinum certification. He leveraged the album’s success to release a couple of others within the following few years and put himself on the map.
Since then, Lil Wayne has become a sensation, working with many famous artists, including Drake, Nicki Minaj, DJ Khaled, Eminem, and so on. He’s also received a large number of awards for his work and collaborations with others, some of which are listed below.
Young Money Masters Catalog Sale
In June 2020, Lil Wayne made a bold business decision, selling the entire Young Money music catalog to Universal Music Group for over $100 million.
The sale included the master recordings of some of the most influential albums in hip-hop, including Drake’s Take Care, Tyga’s Careless World: Rise of the Last King, and Nicki Minaj’s Pink Friday and Queen, all artists signed under the Young Money label. It also included Wayne’s album, Tha Carter IV.
This deal came to light after Wayne’s former manager, Ronald Sweeney, filed a $20 million lawsuit, claiming he was entitled to 10 percent of the proceeds from the sale. Despite the rapper delaying the legal process, Sweeney’s legal team vowed to pursue the accusations and ensure Wayne would appear in court following a favorable appeal verdict.
Real Estate
La Gorce Island Miami Home
In 2011, Wayne purchased a 15,101-square-foot home on La Gorce Island in Miami, Florida. The rapper initially rented the property before spending $11.6 million to buy it from the landlord. While living in the home, he was the victim of several swatting incidents, which pushed him to list the house back on the market.
In 2015, Wayne put the property up for sale with an asking price of $18 million. A year later, increasingly desperate for a sale, the price was reduced by a third, down to $12 million. Finally, after another year of no luck, a further $2 million was shaved off the top, with a sale finalized for $10 million in June 2017.
Allison Island Miami Mansion
Despite the issues with his prior Miami home, Lil Wayne moved to Allison Island, just a stone’s throw away. In 2018, he purchased a newly built 10,278-square-foot, seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom home for $16.75 million.
In 2022, he listed the house back on the market for $29.5 million, dropping to $28 million in December and closing a deal for $22.58 million in early 2023. After considering property taxes and agent fees, he probably netted around $20 million for an estimated profit of $3.25 million.
Expenditure
Wayne drives a black Bugatti Veyron that can reach 60mph in 2.5 seconds. His Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe costs $443,000.
Lil Wayne is a huge fan of Dr. Dre’s headphones, and he was spotted wearing a diamond pair of Beats headphones. The head-wear cost Lil Wayne around $1 million. He is also clearly a fan of diamonds, and what better way to keep an eye on the time than with a $1 million diamond watch?
