From those days until now, we have seen Kanye grow into an international star, not just through his music career but also through his own fashion brand, shoe collections, and several other ventures. Since getting started in the industry, Kanye has topped charts, caused arguments, released controversial tracks and videos, and made a name for himself as one of the wealthiest rappers in the hip-hop industry.

Early Life
Kanye Omari West was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on the 8th of July, 1977.
His parents divorced when he was three years old, and Kanye lived with his mother in Chicago.
His father, Ray West, is a former Black Panther who moved to Maryland after his divorce to open a store and cafe with capital from his son.
West began rapping in the third grade and making musical appearances in the seventh grade. After graduating from high school, he received a scholarship and attended Chicago’s American Academy of Art in 1997. West dropped out of school at 20 to pursue his musical dreams.
Music Career
Kanye West was involved in small music productions until early 2000. He made music for local artists and was a producer for Deric ‘D-Dot’ Angelettie.
He got his big breakthrough when he became the producer for artists on Roc-A-Fella Records, where he collaborated with singers like Ludacris, Common, and Cam’Ron. West started his career as a successful producer, but his heart genuinely desired to become a rapper.
In 2004, he achieved a breakthrough in his rapping career when he released his debut album, ‘The College Dropout,’ which sold 441,000 copies in its first week.
In 2005, he collaborated with composer Jon Brion on West’s new album, ‘Late Registration.’ His earlier album had already sold 2.3 million copies in the U.S.
Two years later he released his third studio album ‘Graduation’ which peaked at No.1 on the US Billboard 200 and sold about 957,000 copies in its first week. The track titled ‘Stronger’ became Kanye’s biggest single hit.
In 2010, West released his fifth album ‘My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy’ which topped the Billboard charts in its first week and was considered a genius piece of work by the critics. The album became platinum in the States.
Since then, West has sold millions of copies and is known as one of the best rappers in the world. He has collaborated with Eminem, Jay-Z, Beyonce, and more.
Business Ventures
Aside from being one of the most successful musicians in the world, West is also a successful entrepreneur. His ventures include producing and designing clothes and shoes.
He has worked with brands such as Nike, Louis Vuitton, and Adidas to produce his own sneakers, which are extremely popular among his fans.
In addition to this West has co-founded companies such as DONDA and GOOD Music, both of which have helped him become one of the wealthiest people in entertainment.

Real Estate
Hidden Hills Home
In 2014, while still with Kim Kardashian, the couple purchased a 17,000-square-foot, seven-bedroom home in the Hidden Hills for $19.75 million. They sold the house for $20 million in 2021.
Miami Beach Condo
In 2018, the couple initially purchased a $14 million, 6,246-square-foot condo in Miami Beach, California. The unit had four bedrooms and 5.5 bathrooms. However, Kanye backed out of the deal a few months later.
Monster Lake Ranch
In 2019, West paid between $13 million and $14 million for Monster Lake Ranch, an almost 4,000-acre ranch in Cody, Wyoming. Two years later, he put the ranch back on the market for $11 million. The listing was removed a year later, potentially indicating a sale.
Kanye also owns an even bigger ranch just down the road in Greybull. He purchased the Bighorn Mountain Ranch, spread across 6,714 acres, in late-2019 for a reported $14.5 million.
Malibu Mansion
Perhaps one of Kanye’s more notorious real estate purchases was the 4,021-square-foot home on Malibu Road, which he purchased in 2021. West paid $57.25 million for the property, then, oddly enough, proceeded to gut the interior. All interior finishes were stripped, including much of the MEP work regarding plumbing and electrical wiring.
Kanye initially stripped everything simply because he didn’t like the previous finishes and wanted to build his own Batcave. However, the project never materialized, and the house was left empty. West initially tried his luck on the market at $53 million in January 2024 but reduced the price to $39 million in April. The property is currently pending sale as of August 2024.
If the sale closes at $39 million, and we assume 6% in agent fees, in addition to the $1.3 million he paid in property taxes, Kanye could lose $22 million from his investment.
Expenditure
Kardashian West’s 20-carat diamond engagement ring, worth an estimated $4.5 million, is among the most expensive celebrity engagement rings.
Kanye reportedly spent $74,000 on gifts for his firstborn daughter, North, who was 18 months old at the time. The haul included a $62,000 diamond-encrusted tiara and a $12,000 toy replica of his black SUV.

In the late 1980s, Julia Roberts earned under six figures per film, with paydays of $50,000 for Mystic Pizza (1988) and $90,000 for Steel Magnolias (1989). A year later, when she starred in Pretty Woman, which was arguably the film that launched her mainstream career, Roberts reportedly earned $300,000. The film’s success dramatically increased her earning potential, and before long, she received a $1 million payday for starring in Sleeping With the Enemy. That same year, Roberts also reportedly earned $3 million from Dying Young and $7 million from Hook.
In the mid-late 1990s, Roberts reached a stage where she was being paid upwards of $10 million per film. Her first recorded eight-figure payday came in 1997, when she earned $12 million for My Best Friend’s Wedding. To close out the decade, she received $11 million for Conspiracy Theory (1997), $15 million for Notting Hill (1999), and $17 million for Runaway Bride (1999).
As we briefly mentioned above, the early 2000s were some of the best years of Julia Roberts’ career. This is primarily due to her joining the $20+ million club with roles in Erin Brockovich, The Mexican, and Closer. During this time, her highest-recorded payday was $25 million for starring in Mona Lisa Smile (2003).
There was a short lull in the mid-2000s, but Roberts returned with a $15 million payday for 2009’s Duplicity, followed by $10 million for starring in Eat, Pray Love a year later. From then on, her earnings dropped to between $3 million and $6 million per film.
However, she recently made another comeback in 2023, starring in Leave the World Behind, for which she reportedly received $25 million. This brings Roberts’ earnings for all of her publicly known salaries, if we include her Homecoming salary (more on that below), to a total of $266.4 million. Of course, many films are missing from the list, so the actual number should be significantly higher.
Homecoming Salary
According to a report from Variety, Roberts was paid an estimated $650,000 per episode to star in Homecoming. They initially estimated her salary at $600,000 per episode in 2018 but increased this figure in their 2019 report. The show aired ten episodes in 2018, earning her $6 million.
Highest-Grossing Movies
The majority of Roberts’ highest-grossing films came between 1999 and 2001, the same period during which she made the most money. Those films include Ocean’s Eleven (2001), which grossed $451 million; Notting Hill (1999), which grossed $364 million; Runaway Bride (1999), which grossed $309 million; and Erin Brockovich (2000), which grossed $256 million.
However, none of those films performed better than 1990’s Pretty Woman, which grossed $463 million. The film only cost $14 million to produce, which gave it the highest ROI of Roberts’ career. Other films to make the list include Ocean’s Twelve ($363 million), Wonder ($315 million), and Hook ($301 million).
Here’s a complete list of Julia Roberts’ ten highest-grossing movies:
- Pretty Woman – $463 million (1990)
- Ocean’s Eleven – $451 million (2001)
- Notting Hill – $364 million (1999)
- Ocean’s Twelve – $363 million (2004)
- Wonder – $315 million (2017)
- Runaway Bride – $309 million (1999)

- My Best Friend’s Wedding – $299 million (1997)
- Erin Brockovich – $256 million (2000)
- Valentine’s Day – $217 million (2010)
