Early Life
Troy Kenneth Aikman was born November 21, 1966, in West Covina, California.
Aikman grew up in Cerritos, a Los Angeles suburb, before moving with his family to Henryetta, Oklahoma, where he was an all-state high school star.
Coaches Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson scouted him, and both eventually went on to train him as a pro with the Cowboys.
Troy picked the University of Oklahoma, but he departed after Switzer implemented the wishbone formation in the Oklahoma offense, stressing the rushing game over Troy’s great passing abilities.
Aikman went on to attend the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was a transfer student and had to sit out the 1986 season.
In his final two years at UCLA, he guided his team to a record, including playoff triumphs in the Aloha Bowl and the Cotton Bowl.
In his senior year, he was selected All-American and finished third in voting for the Heisman Trophy, college football’s most coveted award.
Troy was offered the chance to play baseball with The New York Mets but decided to participate in the 1989 NFL Drafts instead.
Career
He was selected as the first overall pick by the Dallas Cowboys in the 1989 NFL Drafts, but they did not have a successful season before Troy joined.
Even though he performed severely during his first few seasons due to injuries, he still managed to lead the team to its first Super Bowl victory in a long time during the 1992 to 1993 season.
Troy also led the team to victory in the playoffs during the 1993 to 1994 season, and they defended their Super Bowl title in 1994.
In 1996, Aikman successfully led the Dallas Cowboys to another Super Bowl championship victory, defeating the Pittsburgh Steelers in a thrilling and highly anticipated game.
A few seasons later, he became the first quarterback to have three straight 3,000-yard seasons in the history of the Dallas Cowboys.
He was able to reach a career-high of five touchdowns while playing against the Redskins, but during the 2000 season, Troy suffered from many concussions and serious injuries.
One serious incident included being hit by a linebacker, LaVar Arrington, and suffering his tenth concussion in the whole of his career.
With the constant injuries sustained and the severity of multiple concussions, Troy decided to announce his retirement from football in 2001.
Troy played for one of the richest teams in the NFL and along with players like Ezekiel Elliott, Leighton Vander Esch, and Tyron Smith, contributed to the Cowboys legend.
He was going to sign a deal with the San Diego Chargers but changed his mind due to a back injury.
Rather than leaving football altogether, Troy became a commentator on Fox’s NFC telecast.
