Introduction

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar is an American retired professional NBA player and coach with an estimated net worth of $25 Million.

NBA Salary

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s salary during his NBA tenure was much more complex to research than most players’. There isn’t a single source that lists his annual salary for all twenty seasons of his career. Here’s the information we have been able to gather, although these are approximate figures and not fully verified.

In the rookie stage of KAJ’s career (1969-1973), he was earning between $250,000 and $450,000 per season with the Los Angeles Lakers. Abdul Jabbar’s salary gradually increased throughout the decade, and by the 1979/80 season, he was reportedly earning $1 million per year. Adjust for inflation, and this would equate to roughly $4.5 million in today’s currency.

By 1984, Kareem’s annual salary had reached $2 million, and in his final two seasons in the league, he reportedly earned roughly $3 million per year. At the time, this made KAJ the NBA’s highest-paid player. When all was said and done, it’s estimated that Kareem Abdul-Jabbar earned in the ballpark of $30 million during his career.

Divorce Settlement

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar has been married twice, the first to Habiba Abdul-Jabbar in 1971. The couple had three children together before getting divorced in 1978. Not much information was made public regarding a settlement, although reports suggest that Kareem agreed to pay Habiba $1,500 per month as some form of support. It’s not clear whether this is related to alimony payments or child support. Nonetheless, Habiba later alleged that Kareem hadn’t been paying her the agreed-upon sum for over a year, but she didn’t contest it.

A few years later, in 1984, he married his second wife, Cheryl Pistono, with whom he has one child and is still happily married.

Business Manager Lawsuit

In 1986, Abdul-Jabbar filed a $55 million lawsuit against his former business manager, Tom Collins, in what turned out to be a very messy case. Kareem alleged that Collins had mismanaged funds and acted with gross negligence. The suit went on to state that Collins had made a series of bad investments on KAJ’s behalf and had also taken out bank loans, leaving Kareem personally liable for approximately $9 million in investors’ funds. Jabbar later paid over $1.2 million to buy his way out of several of these bad investments and, as a result of the lawsuit, spent several hundred thousand dollars on legal fees.

Tom Collins later filed a countersuit, alleging that KAJ owed him $382,050 in unpaid fees. Fellow NBA player Alex English then also jumped in, filing his own lawsuit against Kareem, claiming he loaned the Lakers star money that was never repaid. The situation became incredibly messy, with KAJ eventually adding Alex English’s name to his original lawsuit and adjusting his sought compensation to $59 million.

According to reports, this lawsuit was later settled out of court, but we have no idea how much of the money Abdul-Jabbar recovered.

Real Estate

Reports suggest that in the early ’90s, Kareem paid approximately $2.2 million for a 6,341-square-foot, four-bedroom, 5.5-bathroom home in Beverly Hills, California. He then invested a fair amount of money in the property, building an indoor sports court, a home gym, and a sauna. In 2001, Kareem sold the home for $2.7 million, and thus, he likely didn’t profit from the investment.

In December 2011, Abdul-Jabbar paid $1.525 million for a 3,586-square-foot, four-bedroom, three-bathroom home in Marina Del Rey, California. The former NBA star tried to sell the property in 2016, seeking $3.1 million. He reduced the price to as low as $2.8 million, but still no takers. The home was eventually rented out for $10,000 per month, and in 2021, it finally sold for $2.4 million.

In 1998, Vince Carter signed a fully guaranteed four-year rookie contract worth $9.5 million with the Toronto Raptors. Carter earned $1.76 million in his first NBA season, with his salary increasing gradually, reaching $3.1 million by the end of his contract.

In 2002, he signed a five-year rookie extension with the Raptors worth $62.9 million, again fully guaranteed. Carter played two more seasons with the Raptors, earning another $21.4 million before being traded to the New Jersey Nets. He played with the Nets for the remainder of the contract, earning the entire $62.9 million.

In 2007, he signed another five-year contract valued at $80 million, with $61.7 million guaranteed. Carter played two more seasons with the Nets, earning $28 million before being traded to the Orlando Magic. He earned $16.1 million with Orlando in 2009 and was traded to the Phoenix Suns in 2010, where he earned $17.5 million that season.

The Suns waived Carter in December 2011 following the NBA lockout, with the Suns only having to pay him $4 million out of the $18.3 million he was due. In the same month, he signed a three-year deal worth $9.27 million with the Dallas Mavericks. Carter earned $2.4 million with the Mavericks in 2011 and retained the $4 million he was owed by the Phoenix Suns.

In 2014, he signed a three-year contract worth $12.3 million with the Memphis Grizzlies, averaging $4.1 million per year. Carter earned the entire $12.3 million with the Grizzlies before signing a one-year deal in 2017 with the Sacramento Kings, taking home $8 million for the season. His last two seasons in the NBA were with the Atlanta Hawks in 2018 and 2019, during which time he earned $2.4 million a year.

During his NBA career, Vince Carter earned $171.9 million, split across eight teams.

Endorsement Deals

Vince Carter was heavily endorsed throughout his career, though his overall income from brand endorsements wasn’t widely reported in the media. What we do know is that his most lucrative partnership was, in all likelihood, with Nike. Carter signed with Puma early in his career but moved to Nike in 2000, signing a multi-year contract reportedly worth $30 million.

Interestingly, Vince reportedly signed with a multi-year contract with Puma in 1998, but was unhappy with the shoes. According to reports, he refused to wear them on the court and ultimately breached his contract. As a result, it’s widely believed that Carter owed Puma $13 million for backing out of the deal. Industry insiders believe that Nike actually helped Carter buy his way out of the deal, though this has never been confirmed.

In addition to shoe deals, Vince also partnered with a long list of brands, including:

  • Bell Canada
  • Cadbury
  • Dave & Buster’s
  • Fleer
  • Gatorade
  • Google Pixel
  • Huupe
  • KITH
  • Nerf
  • Wilson Sporting Goods

Real Estate

In August 2020, Vince Carter paid $6.687 million for an 11,748-square-foot, nine-bedroom mansion in Atlanta, Georgia. Carter still owns the property, which is now valued at $8.3 million. According to public records, he’s paying roughly $120,000 in property taxes each year.

In 2022, on his second NBA contract, Dončić signed a five-year $215.2 million rookie extension with the Mavericks, one of the most expensive rookie extensions in the NBA’s history. It remains the eighth-most-expensive NBA contract of all time. The deal was fully guaranteed and increased Dončić’s average annual salary from $8.1 million to $43 million. He is in his third year of the contract, having already earned $77.2 million in the past two years.

Thus far, in his short but highly successful NBA career, Luka Dončić has earned $109.1 million.

Endorsements

Luka Doncic has been ranked among the world’s highest-paid athletes for several years in a row. He first made the list in 2023, with an estimated $47.2 million in earnings. Roughly one-fifth of this figure ($10 million) was earned off the court through lucrative brand deals. The following year, Doncic’s off-court income grew by 50% to an estimated $15 million. He also earned an additional $15 million in 2025, bringing his total to $40 million over the past three years outside his regular NBA salary.

Doncic initially signed an endorsement deal with Nike before setting foot in the NBA. In 2017, while playing for Real Madrid, Doncic signed a two-year deal with Nike’s core brand. Two years later, he signed a five-year contract with Nike’s Jordan brand, reportedly worth up to $75 million, netting him $15 million/year. Pelicans star Zion Williamson also signed a five-year, $75 million contract with Jordan in the same year. Doncic has released three versions of his signature shoe, the Jordan Luka. The Jordan deal likely accounts for almost all of his annual endorsement income.

In addition to his apparel and footwear deal, Luka Doncic has also worked with the following companies:

  • 2K Sports
  • Bose
  • Gatorade
  • Hasbro
  • Panini

BioSteel Investment

In 2021, sports nutrition and supplement brand BioSteel announced that Luka Doncic had received an equity stake in the company as part of a multi-year endorsement deal. The key point here is that his relationship with BioSteel began as a brand endorsement. Thus, we’re under the impression that he didn’t have to invest any of his own money to acquire the equity.

We should also mention that Doncic is not the only professional athlete to own a stake in BioSteel. Several other athletes, primarily NFL players such as DeAndre Hopkins, Patrick Mahomes, Ezekiel Elliott, and Jalen Ramsey, all hold equity in the company. Exactly what percentage of the company Doncic owns hasn’t been provided.

Real Estate

In June 2020, Luka Doncic purchased a 5,225-square-foot, four-bedroom home in Dallas, Texas, for approximately $3.25 million. While the property was listed for $3.25 million just before Luka acquired it, we’re unable to confirm the closing price because Texas is a non-disclosure state. According to recent estimates, the home’s current value is roughly $4.2 million.

In 2025, Doncic purchased an 8,000-square-foot mansion in SoCal from Maria Sharapova. He paid $25 million for the five-bedroom, eight-bathroom property, which provided the former tennis player with an enormous profit on her investment.
