Career Overview

Before becoming an NBA legend, Paul Millsap played for the Gambling Kittens basketball team at Gambling High School.

In 2003, he was named Mr. Basketball in Louisiana, No. 58 nationally by ESPN, and a fourth-team Parade All-American. His standout high school career enabled him to play for Louisiana Tech, where he averaged 18.6 points and 12.7 rebounds per game.

Right out of the gate, Millsap became the first player to lead the NCAA Division I in rebounds during a freshman year. He also became the only player in NCAA history to lead Division I in rebounds in three consecutive seasons.

As a junior at Louisiana Tech, he was a first-team All-WAC, a WAC All-Defensive honoree, and a finalist for the Oscar Robertson Award. While he could have continued his collegiate career, he opted to declare for the NBA Draft and enter the professional league.

The Utah Jazz

Like Karl Malone before him, during the 2006 NBA Draft, the Utah Jazz chose Paul Millsap, and he signed with them in August. Although he was selected late in the Draft, Millsap had a solid first year, leading all NBA rookies with six double-doubles.

At the start of the 2007-08 season, he reached a new career high of 24 points in a single game during a victory against the San Antonio Spurs. He extended his high to 32 points in December when the Utah Jazz faced off against the Boston Celtics.

In 2009, the Jazz made Millsap a restricted free agent, and a few weeks later, he signed with the Portland Trailblazers for $32 million over four years. While he was far from being one of the richest NBA players in the world at this time, he did receive a nice $5.6 million signing bonus. However, the Jazz were willing to match this contract shortly after approval, so Millsap opted to stay with them.

During the 2010-11 season, Millsap became the Jazz’s permanent starting forward and scored a new career-high 46 points.

The Atlanta Hawks

In 2013, after spending seven years with the Utah Jazz, Paul Millsap signed a two-year deal with the Atlanta Hawks. Now, with the team that had made John Collins wealthy, Millsap was voted to be a reserve on the 2014 East All-Star team.

Millsap earned his second consecutive All-Star nomination in 2015 and helped the Hawks earn their best finish since the 1993-94 season. Thanks to his skills, Millsap was re-signed with the Hawks on a three-year contract worth $59 million.

The following year, he scored a season-high 30 points during a win against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with the Hawks taking victory 110-108. Shortly after, he earned his fourth consecutive All-Star nod and, to celebrate, scored a new season-high of 37 points against the New York Knicks.

The Denver Nuggets And Beyond

Paul Millsap signed a three-year contract for $90 million with the Denver Nuggets in 2017 before debuting at their season opener. Unfortunately, he was ruled out indefinitely in November due to a wrist injury that required reconstructive surgery. After months of recovery, Millsap returned to the court in February and scored a season-high 36 points against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

In 2018, he was named Western Conference Player of the Week, becoming the 18th Nuggets player in history to win the award. However, four days later, he broke a toe, which caused him to miss eight games.

Milsap re-signed with the Nuggets in 2020 for $10 million, but the following season, he moved to the Brooklyn Nets in September. This move was short-lived, and in February 2022, Milsap and James Harden were traded to the Philadelphia 76ers.

Endorsement Deals

In 2020, VanVleet officially signed a multi-year shoe deal with Li Ning, the Chinese sneaker brand. His first signature shoe with them, the “Li-Ning Speed VII,” was released soon after signing that same year. While the value of the agreement has not been publicly disclosed, several other NBA players have signed with the brand in the past, including CJ McCollum and Dwyane Wade, reportedly earning several million dollars annually.

He then starred in a 2021 Samsung commercial alongside young basketball player Deniya Prawl, promoting the brand’s ease of gaming and interacting on devices.

Fines & Suspensions

Perhaps the most notable of which was his one-game suspension without pay in April 2021 after leaving the bench to get involved in an altercation between the Raptors and Lakers. This resulted in him losing approximately $146,552 in salary.

Between 2023 and 2024, VanVleet received three notable fines. The first was a $30,000 fine for publicly criticizing the referee Ben Taylor after suffering a loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. He was then fined $50,000 for, again, issues with the game’s officiating, directing abusive language to the referee in a game against Portland. Finally, he was fined $35,000 for, you guessed it, an issue with an official during a game against Miami. VanVleet’s additional career fines have all been $2,000 fines for technical fouls and ejections.

In 2016, Malik Beasley signed a four-year rookie contract worth $7.8 million with the Denver Nuggets. The deal was initially guaranteed at $3.3 million at signing and was fully guaranteed overall, with Beasley earning $1.6 million in his first NBA season.

He would earn $1.7 million in 2017 and $1.8 million in 2018 with the Nuggets before being traded halfway through the 2019/20 season to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Beasley retained $1.6 million from the Nuggets for the year and earned $925,000 playing at Minnesota.

The following year, Beasley signed a new four-year deal with the Timberwolves worth $60 million, which increased his average annual salary to $15 million. He earned $13.6 million in 2020 and $14.4 million in 2021.

In mid-2022, he was traded to the Utah Jazz, where he spent just half a season earning $10.2 million, and then traded to the Lakers, where he earned an additional $5.2 million in the year. At the end of the year, the Lakers declined Beasley’s fourth-year option, and subsequently, he signed a one-year deal with the Milwaukee Bucks valued at $2.7 million. Fines & Legal Issues

In September 2020, Maliik Beasley was involved in an altercation outside his home in Minnesota. A family had accidentally parked outside Beasley’s house while on a tour, and Malik approached them, allegedly pointing a rifle at the family. The police were called, and after conducting a search on his property, they found several firearms and marijuana.

Beasley was arrested for felony threats of violence and fifth-degree drug possession. He pleaded guilty, and while the drug charge was dropped, he still received a 120-day jail sentence. After his conviction, he was placed on probation and required to attend an anger management program.

The financial impact of the situation, aside from his legal fees and potential lost sponsors, was a 12-game NBA suspension without pay. League rules state that as long as the suspension doesn’t exceed 20 games, the player will lose 1/145 of their base salary per game missed. This equated to Beasley losing approximately $1.65 million in compensation that season.

On-Court Fines

On the court, Malik’s highest fine was $35,000 in 2022 for making inappropriate contact with Drew Eubanks during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He’s also received twenty-one $2,000 fines for technical fouls and ejections, totaling an additional $42,000.

Williamson is still relatively fresh into his NBA career, having just completed his rookie contract. With five seasons under his belt, Zion has averaged 22.9 points per game and a salary of $15.5 million per year. Thus far, Williamson has earned $77.6 million in base salary and additional income from endorsements estimated to be between $50-$60 million.

  • Earned $77.6 million in salary thus far
  • Signed a five-year, $197.2 million extension with the Pelicans in 2023
  • Typically earns $12 million/year from endorsements
  • Signed a seven-year, $77 million endorsement deal with Jordan

Net Worth History

We first researched Zion Williamson’s net worth in 2020. He was estimated to be worth $8 million back then, but that was when he only earned $9 million yearly. Since then, he’s gained an additional $68 million in salary and roughly $50-$60 million from endorsements.

In 2024, Zion Williamson’s net worth is estimated to be $18 Million.

High School Basketball

Zion Williamson started making a name for himself in high school, winning the Under Armour Elite 24 showcase dunk contest.

During his junior season, Williamson went viral with his highlight videos, and Drake even wore his jersey in an Instagram post. After surpassing 2,000 points in January 2017, Williamson appeared on the cover of Slam and received All-USA First Team Honors.

Williamson finished his high school career as South Carolina’s Mr. Basketball and the runner-up to Mr. Basketball USA. In a live interview on ESPN, Williamson committed to attending Duke University, playing his first game for them in November 2018.

Duke University

Zion Williamson started his collegiate career strong and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Freshman of the Week. Soon after, he broke the record for the most points recorded in a single game and was named ACC Freshman of the Week once more.

Unfortunately, in February 2019, Williamson was benched with a knee sprain after his shoe broke, causing him to slip. Following the incident, Nike’s stock dropped $1.1 billion, while Williamson earned Rookie of the Year and Player of the Year honors. He then appeared in the NCAA Tournament, joining Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis as the third freshman to earn 500 points, 50 steals, and 50 blocks in a season.

New Orleans Pelicans

After entering the 2019 NBA draft, the New Orleans Pelicans selected Zion Williamson with the first pick.

Unfortunately, Williamson tore the cartilage in his knee during the preseason, delaying his debut until January 2020. However, once he was on the court again, Williamson wasted no time making a name for himself and racking up points. In his first eight games, he scored at least 20 points in four consecutive games, the longest 20+ point streak by a rookie Pelican.

Soon after, he surpassed Carmelo Anthony as the first teenager to score at least 20 points in 10 consecutive games in NBA history. He became the first rookie since Michael Jordan to earn 16 20-point games within their first 20 contests.

Success & Injury

Following his rookie season, Zion Williamson tied Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s record for the longest 20-point streak in his first two seasons. His streak eventually surpassed Wilt Chamberlin and Karl Malone’s streaks, tying him with Shaquille O’Neal’s record of 25.

While things were going well for the basketball star, during the 2021 off-season, he suffered a fracture in his foot and underwent surgery. Williamson missed the entirety of the 2021-2022 season, but in July 2022, he signed a five-year extension with the Pelicans.

He returned in October 2022 and earned Western Conference Player of the Week honors before being sidelined with a hamstring injury in January. Ultimately, he ended up sitting out the rest of the season and returning in November 2023. Although he returned strong, on April 16, 2024, he suffered another injury during a game against the L.A. Lakers.

In 2019, Zion Williamson signed a four-year rookie contract worth $44.3 million with the New Orleans Pelicans. The deal was initially guaranteed at $20 million at signing and was fully guaranteed overall.

Williamson earned $9.15 million for his first season in the NBA, which is incredibly high for a rookie’s first season. His annual salary increased to $10.2 million in 2020 and $10.7 million in 2021, reaching $13.5 million for the final year of his contract.

In 2023, Williamson signed his five-year rookie extension with the Pelicans, valued at $197.2 million. Again, the deal is fully guaranteed and increases Williamson’s average annual salary from $11.1 million to $39.5 million. He earned $34 million last season and is estimated to earn $36.7 million in the upcoming 2024/25 season.

Thus far in his NBA career, Zion Williamson has already earned $77.7 million with an additional $157.7 million in guarantees remaining.

Endorsements

As the number one pick in the 2019 NBA draft, brands lined up to sign high-value endorsement deals with Zion Williamson. The year the Pelicans selected him, a bidding war took place to obtain Zion on a shoe endorsement contract, with Nike winning out over the competition.

Williamson signed a 7-year deal with Nike Jordan worth $75 million, averaging $10.8 million/year. It was recorded as the most valuable NBA shoe deal since Nike signed LeBron in 2003. Zion released his first signature shoe, the Jordan Zion 1, in April 2021, and he has since released two more.

In the same year he signed with Nike, it was reported that Williamson signed a multi-year deal with Gatorade, which is estimated to earn him a 7-figure sum annually. Thanks to his big brand deals with Nike and Gatorade, Forbes estimated Zion Williamson’s endorsement income to be $20 million in 2020.

Williamson has also worked with brands such as:

  • Bolt 24
  • Mountain Dew (Commercial with Zach LaVine)
  • NBA2K
  • Slam
  • Starry

Estimates of Zion’s annual endorsement income fell significantly to $12 million for 2023.

In May 2020, Zion Williamson reportedly paid $730,000 for a 5,954-square-foot, five-bedroom home in New Orleans, Louisiana. The property had previously been listed for $874,500 and was pending sale at $839,900. Williamson still owns the house.
