Introduction

Robert Rodriguez is an American professional filmmaker, director, and actor with an estimated net worth of $60 Million.

Rodriguez is renowned for his originality and unique take on filmmaking and cinematography. To benefit his films, Robert would direct, produce, write, and edit everything, no matter the budget, earning him the nickname “the one-man film crew”. Some of his most famous works as a director were “Spy Kids” and the “Mexico Trilogy”.

Film Career

With the prize money from his short films, Robert decided to put it towards his very first feature film, “El Mariachi”. Unfortunately, the prize money was not enough to cover the film’s full budget, but this did not stop Robert. He began participating in medical trials and eventually earned $7,000 for the film. The film was so successful that Columbia Pictures purchased the distribution rights in 1992. He was also offered a contract with the studio and signed on for the next two years. With the original “El Mariachi” being such a success, Robert created the El Mariachi series.

He released the second “El Mariachi” film, “Desperado,” in 1995, which introduced Robert to the non-Spanish-speaking side of the film industry. Robert then created his first franchise after the release of the well-known movie “Spy Kids” in 2001, which became a huge commercial success.

The following year, he directed the second Spy Kids movie, Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams, which also became a Box Office hit. He followed the movie’s sequels with a third and finally the fourth in 2011. His most recent work was directing the 2015 film 100 Years and the 2017 sci-fi action movie Escape from New York, which starred Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, and Adrienne Barbeau.

Real Estate

Robert Rodriguez previously owned a 3.94-acre lake house in Austin, Texas, which was known as the 007 Bond House. The property features 5,198 square feet of living space, four bedrooms, 4.5 bathrooms, and other amenities, including an indoor pool. Of course, framed James Bond posters are displayed throughout the home. That said, in July 2024, he listed this property for sale at $8.9 million, though we’re not sure whether he secured a sale.

Personal Life

In 1990, Robert married Elizabeth Avellan, with whom he had five children. Their children are Rebel, Rogue, Rhiannon, Rocket, and Racer, and have all at one time or another become involved in his business. Unfortunately, the couple finalized their divorce in 2006 after 16 years of marriage. There was a brief period of romance between Robert and actress Rose McGowan, but after repeatedly breaking up and getting back together, the two called it quits in 2009.

Summary

Robert has created films that most children will have nostalgic memories of and will be remembered as childhood favorites. He worked hard to create unique movies and deserves the success he’s achieved. Rodriguez never lets anything stand between him and his dreams, and because of this, he has become an inspiration to many other filmmakers.

2022$3.7 Billion
2023$4 Billion
2024$4.8 Billion
2025$5.3 Billion
2026$7.1 Billion

Steven Spielberg has been a billionaire for over three decades now. He was first listed on the Forbes Billionaire Index in 1994, after earning $165 million that year and $170 million the year prior. In recent years, Spielberg hasn’t slowed down and still often earns upwards of $100 million per year. Forbes placed his fortune at approximately $3.5 billion in 2016. From 2017 to 2022, his net worth fluctuated between $3.6 billion and $3.7 billion. In the past four years or so, Spielberg’s wealth has almost doubled to $7.1 billion.

Film Earnings

Given the sheer amount of revenue that Steven Spielberg’s films have generated at the box office, you’d expect him to have been well-paid for his work. One of the primary reasons behind Spielberg becoming the world’s richest film director is that he always preferred negotiating for backend points and taking less money upfront.

His earliest known salary was $1.5 million for directing Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark in the early 1980s. He also earned a percentage of the gross profits, but we don’t know exactly how much he was compensated overall.

Jurassic Park Earnings

When Spielberg directed the first Jurassic Park film in 1993, he again accepted a lower salary to secure a percentage of the backend. Reports suggest that he may have earned $250 million from the film in total.

Several years later, in 1997, he earned an estimated $150 million from The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and in 2001, he reportedly earned $72 million from Jurassic Park III. This would bring Spielberg’s total compensation from the trilogy to roughly $472 million. After adjusting each payday for inflation, it equates to $1.02 billion. That’s more than a billion dollars in today’s currency from just three films.

Additional Film Salaries

Over the last decade or two, some of Spielberg’s known salaries include a $20 million paycheck from War Horse (2011) and $10 million from West Side Story (2021).

Highest-Grossing Films

If you perform a quick search for Steven Spielberg’s total box office gross online, you’ll probably see a figure in the region of $10-$11 billion. However, that figure only accounts for his directorial roles, and not his credits as an executive producer. While Spielberg technically didn’t direct the Jurassic World films, he did receive producer credits, and thus, we’ve included those films in the list.

Given that the four films released thus far have grossed a combined $4.9 billion worldwide, including them has an enormous effect on Spielberg’s box office total. By our count, his films have grossed more than $16 billion globally.

As for which films made his top ten, five belong to the Jurassic franchise, including the original 1993 Jurassic Park, which has since grossed $1.1 billion worldwide. Three of the films are from the Transformers franchise, including Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), and Age of Extinction (2014), which grossed a combined $3 billion.

Here’s a complete list of Steven Spielberg’s ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. Jurassic World – $1.67 billion (2015)
  2. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – $1.31 billion (2018)
  3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon – $1.12 billion (2011)
  4. Jurassic Park – $1.1 billion (1993)
  5. Transformers: Age of Extinction – $1.1 billion (2014)
  6. Jurassic World Dominion – $1 billion (2022)
  7. Jurassic World Rebirth – $872.5 million (2025)
  8. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – $868 million (2005)
  9. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – $836 million (2009)
  10. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – $797 million (1982)

Divorce Settlement

Steven Spielberg married his first wife, Amy Irving, in 1985 and had a son named Max Samuel Spielberg. Unfortunately, just three years later, Irving filed for divorce. This divorce was heavily discussed in the media because, despite signing a prenup before marriage, the couple’s divorce became one of the most expensive in history. At the time, Spielberg was worth approximately $200 million, and Irving walked away from the marriage with half of it, receiving a $100 million settlement.

Bear in mind that their divorce was finalized in 1989. Adjusted for inflation, Irving’s $100 million settlement would be worth approximately $262 million in today’s dollars.

Real Estate

Since the 1980s, Steven Spielberg has made substantial investments in real estate, and many of them have earned him impressive profits.

According to our research, Spielberg’s earliest known property purchase was a 7,600-square-foot beachfront home in Malibu, California. He purchased the house in October 1989, though there are conflicting reports on how much it cost him, especially on realtor websites, which seem to list multiple transactions occurring on the same day. It appears that he paid $3.38 million, though we can’t say for certain, given that we can see four more entries:

  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $2,687,500
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $135,000
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $537,500
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $675,000

In any case, the property features eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, an outdoor pool, a small tennis court, a hot tub, a sauna, and a theatre room. Spielberg returned the property to the market in June 2015, selling it for $21 million. During his ownership, his total property taxes couldn’t have been any more than $2 million, making this an impressive investment.

Spielberg also owned a smaller beachfront property in Malibu, which he purchased for $6 million in February 1990. He allegedly sold the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home for just $4.5 million sometime later, incurring a significant loss.

Thanks to his talents behind the camera, Jackson has become the third-highest-grossing director of all time, with his movies grossing $6.5 billion worldwide. Along with his directorial career, he also owns his own production company, WingNut Films.

Quick Facts

  • Earned approximately $180 million from The Lord of the Rings trilogy
  • Sold his company, Weta Digital, to Unity Software for $1.6 billion in 2021
  • Received a $20 million salary from King Kong, plus 20% of the gross

2023$1.5 billion
2024$1.5 billion

Forbes first listed Peter Jackson on the Forbes Billionaires Index in 2022, with an estimated net worth of $1.5 billion. The director’s entry on the list didn’t come down to just film earnings. Instead, the driving catalyst was the sale of his digital visual effects company, Weta Digital, now known as Wētā FX. Jackson sold the business to Unity Software for $1.6 billion in 2021.

After cementing his newly minted billionaire status, Jackson’s net worth remained stagnant for the next couple of years. However, since then, his fortune has grown by an estimated $200 million per year, reaching $1.7 billion in 2025 and $1.9 Billion at the time of writing.

2006$39,000,000
2013$50,000,000
2014$50,000,000
2022$580,000,000
Total$766,000,000

Before we discuss Peter Jackson’s individual earnings from film and his company Weta Digital, we first want to mention all the times that he’s been featured on the Forbes Celebrity 100 and related lists. The publication has estimated Jackson’s overall income for at least five years of his career.

He first appeared on the list in 2005, earning an estimated $47 million, followed by $39 million in 2006. After the initial success of The Hobbit in the early 2010s, Jackson returned to the list, earning an estimated $50 million in 2013 and 2014. Finally, as we’ve briefly discussed above, Jackson was the highest-paid entertainer in 2022, earning roughly $580 million from the sale of Weta Digital to Unity Software. We’ll discuss all of these income sources in more detail shortly. Just from the five years mentioned above, Peter Jackson earned approximately $766 million.

Weta Digital

In 1993, Peter Jackson partnered with Richard Taylor and Jamie Selkirk to launch Weta Digital, a VFX studio based in New Zealand. Since then, the company has worked on special effects for some of the world’s highest-grossing films, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Avatar, Planet of the Apes, and King Kong. So if you often wondered how the Avatar trilogy pulled off those impressive special effects, now you know.

Weta Digital isn’t just a service provider; they develop a lot of the tools they use themselves. Some of the studio’s most notable software creations include:

  • Barbershop (hair & fur modeling toolset)
  • Loki & Squid (simulation framework)
  • Lumberjack & Totara (procedural generation for foliage and ecosystems)
  • Manuka (GPU-accelerated rendering)

In November 2021, Unity Technologies acquired all of Weta Digital’s software tools, engineering team, technology platform, and additional assets for a reported $1.625 billion. Jackson and his partners technically didn’t sell the whole company, just the software and related assets. As a result of the deal, Peter Jackson was named the world’s highest-paid celebrity in 2022 by Forbes, earning an estimated $580 million that year.

The business was then renamed to Wētā FX and currently has several projects in the pipeline, including Avengers: Doomsday, Moana, and Resident Evil.

Lord of the Rings Trilogy Earnings

Peter Jackson is best known for writing, producing, and directing the original Lord of the Rings Trilogy. The first film, The Fellowship of the Ring, was released in 2001 and starred Elijah Wood and Orlando Bloom, among others. The film grossed $888 million at the global box office, making it the 6th-highest-grossing film of all time at the time. When the sequel, The Two Towers, was released the following year, it surpassed this figure, grossing $938 million. Finally, The Return of the King, released in 2003, grossed $1.14 billion.

Reports suggest that Jackson earned $10 million upfront for each of the three films, plus 10% of box-office profits. The trilogy grossed approximately $3 billion at the box office, and Jackson’s cut was reported to be $150 million, bringing his total compensation across all three films to roughly $180 million.

The Hobbit Earnings

Following the success of The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson wrote, produced, and directed The Hobbit trilogy. The three films: An Unexpected Journey (2012), The Desolation of Smaug (2013), and The Battle of the Five Armies (2014), realized a similar level of success. They grossed a combined $2.9 billion at the box office, with the original film performing the best ($1.02 billion).

According to Forbes, Jackson “likely made” $20 million upfront per film, plus an additional 20% of the backend. This would bring his upfront salary to $60 million. Assuming the 20% figure applied to net profits rather than box office gross, Jackson potentially earned at least another $140 million in backend compensation.

King Kong Earnings

The other notable film, arguably responsible for one of Peter Jackson’s single biggest paydays, that we’re yet to cover is the original 2005 King Kong film. The film grossed approximately $557 million at the worldwide box office, and most reports claim that Jackson earned $20 million upfront, plus an additional 20% of the box office gross. This film was the reason why Jackson was featured on the Forbes list in 2005 and 2006, and based on the information at hand, he likely earned between $70 million and $90 million overall.

Highest-Grossing Movies

Here’s a complete list of Peter Jackson’s ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – $1.14 billion (2003)
  2. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – $1.02 billion (2012)
  3. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies – $962 million (2014)
  4. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug – $959 million (2013)
  5. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers – $938 million (2002)
  6. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – $888 million (2001)
  7. King Kong – $557 million (2005)
  8. The Adventures of Tintin – $374 million (2011)
  9. District 9 – $211 million (2009)
  10. War Horse – $178 million (2011)

Real Estate

In 2008, following an impressive run at the box office with King Kong and The Lord of the Rings, Peter Jackson acquired two adjacent penthouse apartments in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City. He paid a total of $17.35 million for the two properties, comprising 8,300 square feet of living space, ten bedrooms, ten bathrooms, and a 6,000-square-foot terrace. He initially had the idea of combining the two units, but never got around to it. Jackson returned them to the market in 2013, both separately and as one. They were sold to Taylor Swift in 2014 for a total of $19.95 million.
