Early Life

Russell Carrington Wilson was born November 29, 1988, in Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.

Wilson was born at Cincinnati’s Christ Hospital and was raised in Richmond, Virginia. His parents are Tammy Wilson, a nurse director and lawyer Harrison Benjamin Wilson III.

Harrison IV is his older brother, while Anna is his younger sister and one of his biggest fans. Wilson began playing football with his father and brother when he was four years old. In sixth grade, he played his first official game for the Tuckahoe Tomahawks minor football club.

Wilson participated in the Manning Passing Academy during high school. This summer football camp for promising players was directed by Peyton Manning, a future Hall of Fame quarterback and multiple NFL MVP winner.

Manning recognized Wilson several years later when he flew to Denver to discuss the possibility of being picked by the Denver Broncos, with whom Manning had recently signed.

Wilson enjoyed participating in other sports too, and played baseball and basketball for the Collegiate School. His baseball abilities were first recognized while at school, and rather than pursue a career in football, he turned his attention to baseball and college education.

Career Overview

The Baltimore Orioles, one of the wealthiest MLB teams, selected Russell in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft right out of high school.

After enrolling at North Carolina State, Russell continued to play football for the university with great success but was never granted access to the NFL Scouting Combine. Then, to everyone’s amazement, he declared his intent to play baseball professionally and reported to the Colorado Rockies’ spring training camp in 2011.

Russell played minor league baseball for the next two summers with mediocre success. He also changed schools, spending an additional year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Russell revealed in January 2012 that he would start preparing for the forthcoming NFL Scouting Combine, which stunned his family and friends. When he declared for the 2012 NFL draft, he was viewed as a middle-round prospect.

The Seattle Seahawks selected Russell Wilson as the 75th overall pick in the third round. Russell won numerous awards while playing for the Seahawks, including Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Year. He joins Marcus Trufant, Bobby Wagner, and Matt Hasselbeck as the team’s most outstanding players.

He is one of just two quarterbacks in NFL history to have a career passer rating over 100, and he currently holds the record for the most wins by a quarterback through seven seasons.

Russell and the Seattle Seahawks signed a four-year, $140 million contract in 2019, including a $65 million signing bonus – the most expensive in NFL history. As part of his contract, a total of $107 million was guaranteed as his payout, and when he transferred, the Broncos carried over Russell’s Seahawks contract when they acquired him before the 2022 campaign.

Real Estate

Washington Mansion

In August 2015, Russell Wilson and his wife, Ciara, paid $6.7 million for a 10,740-square-foot, seven-bedroom mansion in Bellevue, Washington. This turned out to be an incredible investment, as the couple listed the property in 2022 for $28 million. In 2024, they closed a deal for $21.25 million, which is $14.55 million more than they paid. Even after agent commissions and nine years’ worth of property taxes, they still likely profited between $11.5 and $12.5 million.

Colorado Mansion

In April 2022, while playing for the Broncos, Wilson paid $25 million for a 20,060-square-foot mansion in Cherry Hills Village, Colorado. Unfortunately, when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2024, he needed to sell the property. Wilson let it go for just $21.5 million, losing $3.5 million before even considering listing fees and property taxes.

Investments

Wilson joined the Eat the Ball team as an endorser and co-owner in 2014 and started sponsoring Reliant Recovery Water and the frozen food manufacturer Luvo in 2015.

Russell established the TraceMe fan network platform in 2017, which announced the opening of its public beta and revealed a $9 million Series A investment round with YouTube and Alibaba co-founder Joe Tsai and Jeff Bezos’ Bezos Expeditions.

Personal Life

Wilson holds a strong Christian faith and discusses it often on his social media platforms. In high school, Russell Wilson and Ashton Meem met in Richmond, Virginia, while she attended the University of Georgia. She followed Wilson to Wisconsin in 2010, and in January 2012, the couple got married, but in April 2014, they divorced amicably.

Early in 2015, Wilson started dating Ciara, a musician, and midway through March 2016, they made their engagement public. On July 6, 2016, they were wed in a castle in England, and 2 years later, they welcomed their daughter into the world in April 2017.

Throughout the off-season, he hosts a young football camp called the Russell Wilson Passing Academy and also meets with soldiers at a nearby military installation. Wilson also represents the Charles Ray III Diabetes Association on a national level, and the money raised from his 2012 youth football camp will go to charity.

He and the NASCAR driver Kasey Kahne, co-host an annual charity golf event at the Suncadia Resort in Cle Elum, Washington, east of Seattle.
