In 1992, Shaquille O’Neal signed a 4-year contract with the Orlando Magic worth $17.4 million. His average annual salary was $4.3 million, which at the time was incredibly high for rookies.

In 1996, O’Neal signed a 7-year contract with the Los Angeles Lakers worth $120 million, effectively quadrupling his annual salary. At the end of the agreement, Shaquille earned $19.3 million a year in salary before signing a 3-year extension with the Lakers.

His peak annual earnings were during the 2004/05 season, when he earned $27.7 million. From then on, Shaquille continuously commanded a yearly salary of $20 million.

During his 19-season NBA career, Shaquille O’Neal earned a total of $286.3 million.

Endorsements

Shaquille O’Neal’s most impressive deal was with Reebok in 1992, where he released his signature shoe line, the Shaq Attaq. As the NBA’s hottest new talent, he also scored multi-million-dollar endorsement contracts with Kenner Parker Toys and PepsiCo.

In 1993, the Los Angeles Times reported that O’Neal’s Reebok and Kenner Parker Toys deals were worth more than $30 million. In 1998, O’Neal walked away from the $40 million contract with Reebok as the company looked to cut costs. This led him to partner with Walmart on a line of shoes priced at less than $30 per pair.

His low-priced Dunkman sneaker brand, which has sold 80 million pairs since its introduction in 1996, was driven by O’Neal’s influence and commitment to making quality footwear accessible to everyone.

In 2019, Shaquille promoted Gold Bond products, focusing on its line of body powders and creams. His humorous and relatable commercials were a hit with his fans, helping to boost the company’s sales.

Shaquille secured a new multi-million-dollar deal with the food chain Papa John’s in 2022. The chain will pay him $5.625 million over a three-year period. Papa John’s will also pay O’Neal a royalty fee of 20 cents per Shaq-A-Roni pizza sold.

O’Neal has been a long-time endorser of General Auto Insurance since 2016, a partnership valued at approximately $2.5 million annually. His association with the brand includes over 20 commercials, with some featuring celebrities such as Snoop Dogg and Ben Schwartz.

Throughout his playing career, O’Neal promoted various brands, earning an estimated $200 million through endorsements for fast food, clothing, cereals, and insurance.

Real Estate

Shaquille O’Neal has owned numerous properties over the years, across several states, including Florida, California, Nevada, Texas, and Georgia.

Georgia Portfolio

In April 2016, Shaq acquired an 8,637-square-foot property in McDonough, Georgia, for $1.15 million. The home, which is situated on 14.3 acres, features five bedrooms, eight bathrooms, a separate guest house, and an outdoor pool. You can briefly see the exterior of the home in a YouTube video from last year, when O’Neal takes delivery of a custom vehicle. O’Neal still owns this property, which is currently valued at roughly $2.3 million.

That said, this isn’t his only property in the area. The former NBA player also picked up a larger 9,148-square-foot home in McDonough for $1.125 million in February 2020, and a 4,635-square-foot residence for $387,500 in July 2021. We couldn’t figure out how much these two properties are currently worth, but it looks like he owns at least $4 million worth of real estate in McDonough.

Florida Mansion

Arguably Shaq’s most notable home was his 76,000-square-foot mansion in Florida overlooking Lake Butler. It was also his earliest known purchase, costing him $3.95 million in November 1993. This property is enormous, featuring 12 bedrooms, 15 bathrooms, an indoor basketball court, a vehicle showroom, an outdoor pool with a rock-formation waterfall, and a private dock on the lake.

Shaq returned the property to the market in May 2018, with an asking price of $28 million, but nobody wanted it. Why? Well, there were a few reasons. The first was that the style was outdated and completely personalized to Shaq’s liking. Secondly, the floor plan was a long, narrow rectangle, which meant walking down long hallways just to get from one side of the house to the other. O’Neal slashed the price to $21.99 million at the end of the year, and again to $16.5 million in 2020. He ultimately let it go for just $11 million in October 2021.

It’s also worth mentioning that since 2002, he’d paid at least $2.5 million in property taxes, so his profits on the sale likely weren’t as much as you’d think.

Shaq grew up right down the highway from me in NJ Dan 😉 3 years on me though, and by the time he reached high school age he was long gone. If he stuck around he’d have attended one of the North Jersey catholic school powerhouses that have churned out about 20 plus NBA players over the years.

2011/12Memphis Grizzlies$261,829
2012/13Memphis Grizzlies$261,829
Total Career Earnings:$83,235,298

Gilbert Arenas’s first NBA season salary was just $333,000. The following 2002/03 season elevated his salary to $512,000. However, his 2003 trade to the Washington Wizards was the start of his earning millions of dollars.

Arenas earned $8.5 million in his first season with the Wizards and remained with them for six more seasons. From 2003 to 2010, He earned a total salary of $82 million. Yet, his highest single-season salary came in 2011, when he was traded to the Orlando Magic, earning him $17.7 million.

Throughout his NBA career, Gilbert Arenas earned $101.1 million.

Adidas Endorsement Deal

The most notable partnership of Gilbert Arenas’ career was with Adidas, which began in December 2003, shortly after his first two rookie seasons. Before that, Gilbert was signed to Reebok simply because they paid more. This partnership was and still is the most talked about when discussing Gilbert’s career for several reasons.

In a 2022 interview with DJ Vlad, Gilbert explained how he essentially finessed Adidas into offering him a five-year, $40 million contract. When he first signed with the brand in 2003, they reportedly paid him $500,000. Presumably, this was $500,000 over the four years, up until his new contract.

In 2007, negotiations began to secure a new deal for Arenas with the brand. His agent requested $2 million, but Adidas rejected the figure. Arenas was told that he didn’t have the “star name” to be worth millions of dollars. As a result, Gilbert began figuring out how to boost his brand and put a plan together.

$2.5 Million Birthday Party

For his 25th birthday, Arenas hosted an enormous, invite-only birthday party at the Four Seasons, splashing $1 million to rent out the entire hotel for the night. He spent an additional $1.5 million on flights to get everybody out there and everything else for the party. This was all done for Adidas’ benefit, and it worked.

Adidas eventually came back with a five-year, $15 million contract offer, but upon hearing it, Arenas walked out of the room and returned to his hotel. A brand rep knocked on his door and asked how much he wanted, to which Gilbert countered with $40 million over eight years. They accepted.

Contract Termination

Unfortunately for Arenas, this deal was ultimately cut short, following an incident in December 2009 where he brought an unloaded gun into the Washington Wizards locker room. A month later, he pled guilty to felony gun-possession charges, which led to Adidas terminating his contract. Arenas wasn’t guaranteed the full $40 million, so it’s assumed he only earned $10 million under the deal.

Additional Endorsement Deals

While Adidas was the primary off-court sponsor for Gilbert Arenas, he also signed several other brand deals during his NBA career. This included partnerships with companies such as EA Sports, PETA, and Sprite.

When Forbes last listed Arenas among the world’s highest-paid athletes in 2013, his endorsement income accounted for just $100,000 of his $21.6 million in earnings that year. This was a huge step down from the millions he was receiving in the late 2000s.

Real Estate

Virginia Home

In December 2003, Gilbert Arenas, through his Gja Properties LLC, paid $2.875 million for a 13,250-square-foot, seven-bedroom mansion in Great Falls, Virginia. He reportedly spent another $1 million to build the largest residential swimming pool in America (we’re not sure if that statement remains true today). The pool was costly because it used real boulders to create a cave with a bar and hot tub.

In June 2012, he listed the home for sale at $3.5 million, but sold it for just $2.5 million in December 2014. After considering the money he put into the house, listing fees, and property taxes, his loss potentially sat between $1.7 million and $2 million.

Encino Home

In September 2007, Gilbert Arenas purchased a 5,319-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Encino, California, for $3.1 million. Arenas owned the house for almost a decade before listing it in 2016 for $3.495 million. After a couple of months on the market, he removed the listing.

However, in October 2022, Arenas tried his luck again at $3.8 million, eventually letting it go for $3.1 million, his original purchase price. We estimated that his property taxes were roughly $350,000 to $400,000 while he owned the home, resulting in a significant loss on the sale, even before listing fees.

Reebok Endorsement Deal

Ming was briefly signed to Nike for his rookie season in the NBA; however, a year later, in 2003, he switched to Reebok and signed one of the largest endorsement deals in sports history.

According to reports, Ming’s contract with Reebok was valued at between $70 million and $75 million over ten years, effectively paying him $7.5 million per year. Remember, the Chinese star was earning less than $5 million per year in salary at the time. The Reebok deal became his primary source of income.

Philanthropy

Yao Ming is now the president of the Chinese Basketball Association and owns the Shanghai Sharks, the team where he started his professional career. He has also invested in a winery, Yao Family Wines, which complements his other restaurant investment interests.

In his free time, Yao Ming is passionate about charitable causes, especially those related to animal rights. He has served as an ambassador for elephant conservation and is a spokesman for the group WildAid. His fame and influence have allowed him to bring attention to important issues, such as the dangers of shark hunting and the threat of extinction.

Despite his success and fame, Yao Ming is known for living a reasonably modest life and for not using social media very often. When he tweets or posts to Instagram, it’s usually to congratulate other basketball players or to promote his charitable work.

Summary

Yao Ming was a dominant force in the NBA, playing for the Houston Rockets and earning All-Star honors seven times. After hanging up his sneakers, he found success in various business ventures in China and gave back through his charitable foundation.

Total Career Earnings:$104,133,378

Karl Malone’s first season in the NBA earned him just $225,000. This was in 1985, and if we adjust for inflation, that amount would be worth $645,000 today.

Malone played his entire NBA career, bar one season, with the Utah Jazz. During his time at Utah, Malone signed five contracts. His third NBA contract was a five-year deal at Utah worth $17.8 million, earning him an average of $3.5 million a year.

In 1996, he signed a three-year veteran extension, worth $15.9 million. His 5th and final contract with the Utah Jazz was the most lucrative: a four-year deal worth $66.5 million. Malone’s highest-earning year under this contract was $19.25 million.

In 2003, Karl Malone spent his final year in the NBA with the Los Angeles Lakers, earning $1.5 million. While playing in the NBA, Karl Malone earned a total salary of $104 million. With his sponsorships and endorsements, this figure increased to well over $150 million by the time he retired.

Karl Malone retired from basketball in 2004 and now owns several businesses, including restaurants, takeaways, and car dealerships. While he is still working, he is doing so at a much slower pace than before, and his annual income is unknown.

Business Investments

Karl has a dealership named Karl Malone Toyota, which is a Toyota dealership. Some reports suggest the business generates over $500,000 per month for Karl, but this is just speculation.

Karl manages his various businesses from a distance and owns a local cigar shop and a Teriyaki restaurant. He also partnered with his daughter in a clothing store and an apartment complex. Karl also spends time at several businesses he started in Utah, but despite all that, he’s enjoying his retirement.

Real Estate

Over the years, Karl Malone has owned several properties, beginning with his home in Salt Lake City, Utah. This was a 17,230-square-foot mansion, featuring eight bedrooms and eleven bathrooms. It also featured a ton of amenities, including an outdoor pool, a shooting range, a sauna, a steam room, and an indoor basketball court. The property was custom-built for Malone in 1997, though it’s unclear how much he spent on it.

In 2003, Malone began trying to sell the home for roughly $6 million, but he struggled to snag a buyer. A couple of years later, he put the property up for auction with J.P. King Auction Co., and it sold to the highest bidder for $2.5 million.

In 2005, Karl built a custom 8,560-square-foot, six-bedroom, six-bathroom home in Ruston, Louisiana. The property is situated on 5.93 acres of land and currently has an estimated value of $2.16 million. Once again, it’s unknown how much the former athlete spent to build the home.

Summary

Karl’s successful career made him one of the best power forwards in basketball history. He still holds the records for second-most career points and free throws in the NBA. Even though he started his career as the 13th pick, the Utah Jazz team announced that they would’ve picked him at a better number if they had known the impact he ended up making in the NBA.
