Early Life

Rachel Meghan Markle was born on the 4th August 1981, in Los Angeles, California. She has stated that she’s a proud and confident mixed-race woman; her father is Caucasian, and her mother is African-American. Her parents separated when she was two, and divorced when she was six. Despite the divorce, they both continued to have an active role in her life.

Meghan grew up in Hollywood, thanks to her father, Thomas Markle, who used to work in the TV industry. From the early age of 5, Markle was educated at private schools. Her high school, Immaculate Heart, was an all-girls private catholic school in LA. While attending school, Meghan began taking part in plays and musicals.

In 1999, she was admitted to Northwestern University. Between her junior and senior years, Meghan got an internship at the American embassy in Buenos Aires, working as a junior press officer. She briefly considered a political career, but unfortunately, her score on the Foreign Service Officer Test was too low for her to pursue it.

She graduated from Northwest’s School of Communication four years later (in 2003) with a double bachelor’s degree in International Studies and Theatre.

Career

As Markle first began acting, she was working as a freelance calligrapher. She also taught bookbinding. As she says, at first it was really difficult for her to get cast because of her ethnicity – she was not white enough for the white roles and not black enough for the black roles.

She made appearances on TV shows here and there, some of which you’ll see further on in the article. Her first on-screen role was in 2004, as a nurse in one of the episodes of a daytime soap opera called General Hospital.

Before she finally got her first regular role, she did a number of contract acting and modeling gigs. She also worked as a “briefcase girl” on a game show called Deal or No Deal.

Her most noticeable role began in July 2011, when she was cast as Rachel Zane on ‘Suits.’ Her character was a paralegal, who later went on to become a lawyer. She finished her work with the series in late 2017, after over six successful years with the series.

Markle has also dabbled in the film world, playing roles in films such as ‘Get Him to the Greek,’ ‘Horrible Bosses,’ and ‘Anti-Social’.

Aside from being quite a successful acting career, Meghan also had a lifestyle blog called “The Tig,” which she opened around 2014. There, she shared tips, advice and ideas on a variety of topics, from fashion to travel and beauty, The blog was shut down in 2017.

In 2020, Harry and Meghan announced a five-year Netflix deal that would include productions such as docuseries, documentaries, feature films, and children’s programming. Although it’s not known how much the deal is worth, it is estimated to be between $50 and $100 million.

The first project in the deal with Netflix has already premiered—a six-part docuseries titled ‘Harry and Meghan.’ It explores their relationship and everything they have had to deal with since it started, such as the British press not being accepting of Meghan.

Aside from the deal with Netflix, Harry and Meghan also have a deal with Spotify and Archewell Audio, which involves the production and hosting of podcasts. Their Spotify deal, signed in September 2020, is worth between $15 and $18 million. Meghan’s podcast, Archetypes, focuses on women, and the first episode dropped in 2022.

In 2021, Prince Harry and Meghan gave a tell-all interview with Oprah Winfrey, discussing their relationship, family life, and mental health struggles.

Meghan also wrote a children’s book that was released in 2021 titled ‘The Bench’. Harry’s autobiographical book called ‘Spare’, on the other hand, is set to release on January 10th, 2023.

Earnings & Salary

There’s limited information about how much Meghan actually earned from her acting career. Still, we know her earnings from three of the biggest movies she acted in – she earned $187,000 from her role in ‘Remember Me,’ $171,429 from playing in ‘The Candidate’ and $153,846 from her role in ‘The Boys and Girls Guide to Getting Down.’

As for her salary on ‘Deal or No Deal,’ it is reported that Meghan earned about $800 per every episode she stared in.

Suits Salary

According to sources, Markle was paid $50,000 per episode for Suits. However, it’s unknown whether that figure covers all seven seasons. She likely received a salary increase at some point during the middle seasons. Assuming a $50,000 per episode floor pay, Markle would have earned $600,000 for season one and $800,000 apiece for seasons two through seven. In total, this equates to $5.4 million.

Personal Life

Before meeting Prince Harry, Meghan was married to a producer called Trevor Engelson. The couple tied the knot in 2011 and divorced two years later, in 2013.

In 2016, Meghan began dating Prince Harry, of the British Royal Family, the grandson of Her Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth II. Prince Harry is the younger child of Prince Charles (now King Charles III) and Princess Diana. His brother is Prince William, the future king of the United Kingdom, and his sister-in-law is Kate Middleton. Prince Harry and Megan were introduced to each other by a mutual friend.

In November 2017, they announced their engagement to the press. On May 19th, 2018, Harry and Meghan tied the knot at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle. The wedding was the social event of the year, with several celebrities, such as Oprah Winfrey, Elton John, David and Victoria Beckham, and more in attendance. Recently Meghan revealed that it wasn’t their first time saying vows to each other – the exchange of vows actually happened three days prior to the wedding, in the couple’s garden with the Archbishop of Canterbury, although it wasn’t a legally recognized marriage.

As a result of marrying Prince Harry, Meghan gained the titles of the Duchess of Sussex, Countess of Dumbarton, and Baroness Kilkeel.

A few months later, in October 2018, the royal couple announced that they are expecting a child, and in May 2019 their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor was born. Their second child, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, was born two years later, in June of 2021.

Stepping Down from the Royal Family

At the beginning of 2020, Harry and Meghan decided to step down as senior members of the royal family. As they said in their Instagram statement released on January 8, 2020 “We intend to step back as ‘senior’ members of the Royal Family and work to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen.”

As a result, the couple isn’t allowed to use the titles “His Royal Highness” and “Her Royal Highness” anymore. Harry, however, still holds the title of the prince, and the couple also kept their Duke and Duchess of Sussex titles.

They also aren’t founded by the Sovereign Grant anymore – it covered about 5% of their administrative and household expenses. The rest was covered by then Prince Charles, now King Charles III, and his Duchy of Cornwell estate. Due to their step down from official royal duties, that is no longer the case. However, King Charles III provided them with a “substantial sum” to help them transition to financial independence.

Finally, due to the step down, Harry and Meghan were no longer provided with the security arrangements that are normally in place to protect the senior royals. However, in July of 2022, Prince Harry was granted permission to challenge that in the High Court.

Meghan Markle – Net Worth Over the Years

Unfortunately, there’s not much information about Meghan Markle’s net worth throughout the years – however, what we do know is that Meghan entered her marriage to Harry with a net worth of $5 million. Harry, on the other hand, had a net worth of about $20 million, most of which came from a trust fund left to him by his late mother – Princess Diana.

What Does Meghan Spend Her Money On

In 2020, Harry and Meghan purchased an estate in Montecito, California. It is reported that they paid about $5 million in cash, and took out a mortgage for the rest (roughly $10 million). The estate includes nine bedrooms, sixteen bathrooms, a library room, a pool, a gym, a sauna, as well as a children’s cottage and a tea house. The property is surrounded by cypress trees and rose gardens.

They also had to pay back about $3 million for the renovation of their UK family home – the Frogmore Cottage.

Kevin Hart's Career

Hart’s early career started when ABC gave him his own sitcom, The Big House. Hart played himself on the show. The outlandish storyline failed to resonate with audiences, and the show was canceled after just six episodes.

Total Calculated Earnings:$260,440,000

In the late 1980s, Julia Roberts earned under six figures per film, with paydays of $50,000 for Mystic Pizza (1988) and $90,000 for Steel Magnolias (1989). A year later, when she starred in Pretty Woman, which was arguably the film that launched her mainstream career, Roberts reportedly earned $300,000. The film’s success dramatically increased her earning potential, and before long, she received a $1 million payday for starring in Sleeping With the Enemy. That same year, Roberts also reportedly earned $3 million from Dying Young and $7 million from Hook.

In the mid-late 1990s, Roberts reached a stage where she was being paid upwards of $10 million per film. Her first recorded eight-figure payday came in 1997, when she earned $12 million for My Best Friend’s Wedding. To close out the decade, she received $11 million for Conspiracy Theory (1997), $15 million for Notting Hill (1999), and $17 million for Runaway Bride (1999).

As we briefly mentioned above, the early 2000s were some of the best years of Julia Roberts’ career. This is primarily due to her joining the $20+ million club with roles in Erin Brockovich, The Mexican, and Closer. During this time, her highest-recorded payday was $25 million for starring in Mona Lisa Smile (2003).

There was a short lull in the mid-2000s, but Roberts returned with a $15 million payday for 2009’s Duplicity, followed by $10 million for starring in Eat, Pray Love a year later. From then on, her earnings dropped to between $3 million and $6 million per film.

However, she recently made another comeback in 2023, starring in Leave the World Behind, for which she reportedly received $25 million. This brings Roberts’ earnings for all of her publicly known salaries, if we include her Homecoming salary (more on that below), to a total of $266.4 million. Of course, many films are missing from the list, so the actual number should be significantly higher.

Homecoming Salary

According to a report from Variety, Roberts was paid an estimated $650,000 per episode to star in Homecoming. They initially estimated her salary at $600,000 per episode in 2018 but increased this figure in their 2019 report. The show aired ten episodes in 2018, earning her $6 million.

Highest-Grossing Movies

The majority of Roberts’ highest-grossing films came between 1999 and 2001, the same period during which she made the most money. Those films include Ocean’s Eleven (2001), which grossed $451 million; Notting Hill (1999), which grossed $364 million; Runaway Bride (1999), which grossed $309 million; and Erin Brockovich (2000), which grossed $256 million.

However, none of those films performed better than 1990’s Pretty Woman, which grossed $463 million. The film only cost $14 million to produce, which gave it the highest ROI of Roberts’ career. Other films to make the list include Ocean’s Twelve ($363 million), Wonder ($315 million), and Hook ($301 million).

Here’s a complete list of Julia Roberts’ ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. Pretty Woman – $463 million (1990)
  2. Ocean’s Eleven – $451 million (2001)
  3. Notting Hill – $364 million (1999)
  4. Ocean’s Twelve – $363 million (2004)
  5. Wonder – $315 million (2017)
  6. Runaway Bride – $309 million (1999)
  7. Hook – $301 million (1991)
  8. My Best Friend’s Wedding – $299 million (1997)
  9. Erin Brockovich – $256 million (2000)
  10. Valentine’s Day – $217 million (2010)

Real Estate

The actress likes to invest some of her fortune in real estate, and she owns some incredible properties in the US. She also likes to spend her money on other lavish things, such as clothes. Julia Roberts is the proud owner of a $7 million mansion in Malibu and a lavish apartment in New York, worth a total of $3,8 million.
