Over the following years, he would compare favorably to some of the richest athletes in the world by delivering a string of championship wins in MMA.

Early MMA Career & UFC Breakthrough

After a successful fighting record as a youth fighter, Max Holloway decided to enter the world of mixed martial arts in 2019 when he was nineteen years old.

He instantly stood out as a fighter to watch, picking up a record of four straight wins and gaining recognition as the seventh-placed featherweight prospect in 2012.

Compared to the likes of Anthony Pettis, he demonstrated a keen ability for bringing together a variety of powerful picks, knees, and elbows.

Early Life

Adolph Thornton, Jr. was born on the 11th of August, 1985, in Chicago, Illinois.

His family moved to Memphis, Tennessee, when he was 2 years old.

He has two sisters and two brothers.

In his hit track “Preach”, he rapped, “Mama always in the streets, so guess who raised me?”

In his music, he describes a time where his parents were smoking crack.

Career

With his experiences of life on the rough streets of Memphis informing his approach to rapping, Young Dolph was encouraged to create a mixtape.

His close relationship with his grandmother, who supported his creative activities, also influenced his decision to pursue a music career.

Young Dolph would go on to work with some of the richest rappers in the world before his untimely death from a gunshot wound in 2021.

Paper Route Campaign Mixtape & Early Career

Following encouragement from his friends and family, Young Dolph gained popularity in the Memphis area with the release of his first mixtape.

Titled Paper Route Campaign, it demonstrated his promising talent and inspiration from established rappers, including Master P and Baby.

He followed this release with a second mixtape, High Class Street Music, further establishing his raw and uncompromising approach to rapping.

Additional mixtapes further demonstrated his growing confidence as a performer, with several more additions to the High Class Street Music series.

Dolph also began to work closely with notable stars of the hip-hop community, including the Atlanta trap rapper Gucci Mane on 2013’s East Atlanta Memphis.

2014 Debut Album & Notable Singles

With multiple successful mixtapes under his belt, Young Dolph launched his inevitable debut album to the public in 2016, Kings of Memphis.

An ode to life on the streets of his hometown, the album was released on his independent label, Paper Route Empire, reaching 49th position on the Billboard Charts.

This was followed by a distribution deal with Empire Distribution, leading to his first major collaborative album, Dum and Dummer, in 2019.

The title, inspired by the comedy movie Dumb and Dumber, reflected the album’s satirical swipe at the rapping community and internal conflicts.

It became the first top-ten album Dolph had worked on to date, with critical praise noting his excellent songwriting range of insights into despair.

Later Works & Posthumous Releases

Following the critical and commercial success of Dum and Dummer, Young Dolph voiced his intention to retire in 2020 to spend time with his family.

At the same time, he released another single, “Sunshine,” while also dropping hints at another upcoming solo album in the pipeline.

This album, Rich Slave, landed in August 2020 and became his highest-charting release, peaking at number four on the Billboard 200 charts.

“Mmm … not really, ’cause, like, I know that I like music and all of my friends like music. So, once you put it out, and they were on it for a while, then you give ’em new music. They just love to have music, because it’s easy to get burnt out on new music really fast.” – Young Dolph

“Yeah, I was going to have no features on Bulletproof. But I ended up putting Gucci Mane on it. That’s just my partner. He’s just one of my personal friends. It ain’t no different for him from my homeboys in Memphis. I just have a real personal relationship.” – Young Dolph

“Naw, I just love music, know what I mean? Music just sets the tone, it puts you in a different vibe, different mode, different moods. I just like music. You hear music every day. It’s something you can’t dodge. I don’t care what you do, you’re going to hear music every day.” – Young Dolph

“It’s cool. It’s really cool and it makes you feel like you’re in the South. You know you’re in the South. It smell good in the air. You have a good barbecue, good restaurants around the city. It’s a good place, you know what I’m saying? There are certain areas you gotta stay out of, but it’s just like everywhere else in the world, you know what I mean?” – Young Dolph
