Introduction

Not only was he extremely successful on the ice, but he is also an entertaining commentator with an inside track on what is happening during the season.

He is also one of the very few players to have won the Stanley Cup more than once during their career.

As of May 2024, Joe Sakic’s net worth is estimated to be $60 Million.

Joe Sakic Facts

  • He assisted a goal in the very first game of his career and scored for the first time during the 1988 season.
  • Joe’s first of 12 All-Star appearances came in 1990, with two assists in Pittsburgh.
  • In 1999, Joe was able to collect the 1000th point of his career.
  • He was named captain of Team Canada in 2005 specifically for the 206 Winter Olympics.
  • After retiring in 2009, Joe returned to work in the front office for the Avalanche in 2011.

Early Life

Joseph Steven Sakic was born July 7, 1969, in British Columbia, Canada.

When Sakic was four years old, he had his first chance to witness an NFL game live and then only ever wanted to be an NHL player from that day forward.

Unfortunately, Joe was a little shorter than his colleagues, so he tried to style his game after his idol, Wayne Gretzky, in an attempt to compensate for his weakness.

He transferred to Burnaby North Secondary School and, following major success in the sport, he was given his first opportunity.

Career

Joe first played in the Western Hockey League for the Lethbridge Broncos during the 1985 to 1986 season.

He became one of the best performers during his time with the Broncos, winning the Rookie of the Year and WHL Most Valuable Player of the year awards.

Once he was eligible for the NHL draft, he was selected 15th overall by the Quebec Nordiques in the 1987 NHL Entry Draft.

He started playing for the Quebec Nordiques during the 1992 to 1993 season and immediately became captain due to his strong leadership skills.

Sakic joins other star players like Eric Lindros and Chris Drury who spent time playing for the Nordiques.

Joe ended up leading the team to their first playoffs in over six years as captain and led them to their division title during the 1994 to 1995 season.

The Quebec Nordiques were sold due to financial problems and relocated to Denver, Colorado in 1995 – changing their name to the Colorado Avalanche.

Despite the upheaval, the change did little to stop Joe and the team’s momentum and he led them to the Stanley Cup.

Joe hit a bad patch in his career when he suffered from multiple injuries, but on his return, led the team to another Stanley Cup win during the 2000 to 2001 season.

This was an incredibly successful season for Joe, as he ended up receiving multiple awards for his excellent performances and made his first NHL-All-Star First Team appearance.

Joe played for the Avalanche team for the next several years but unfortunately never won another Stanley Cup, unlike Jason Arnott, who managed a win in 2000.

Sakic announced his retirement from hockey due to injuries in 2009 but returned in 2011 to help his team through a position in the front office.

Joe Sakic’s Career Earnings

Joe was awarded the Winter Olympic Games Ice Hockey Tournament Most Valuable Player in 2002 and this was followed by his inclusion in the Winter Olympic Games Ice Hockey All-Star Team.

Estimating Joe Sakic’s annual income is not possible as his salary is not publicly available since he retired from professional sport.

He is reported to have earned at least $94 million during the course of his professional career, but this excludes his sponsorship and endorsement deals, which brought in substantially more.

Sakic joins other Canadian ice hockey players such as Mark Messier, Jason Spezza, Jarome Iginla, and Marc-Andre Fleury who have become multi-millionaires.

Joe Sakic’s Net Worth Annually

The first Olympics in which NHL players competed were held in Nagano, Japan, in 1998, and Sakic made his debut appearance there.

He only managed three points in four games while dealing with a knee injury, and the Canadian team came in fourth after falling short of expectations.

Now that he’s retired, it is difficult to obtain a breakdown of Joe Sakic’s annual net worth, but it is reported that he has a net worth in 2022 of approximately $65 million.

In Salt Lake City, where he made his second Olympic appearance, Sakic led the Canadian team to victory against Team USA.

The team excelled and their gold medal game triumphed over The USA with four points, giving Canada its first gold medal in fifty years.

Personal Life

Family man Joe married Debbie Metivier in 1993 and the high school sweethearts went on to have three children, one named Mitchell and twins, Chase and Kamryn.

Joe is well-known as a big family man and loves to spend time with his children rather than being out on the town partying.

He also holds fund events for charities, such as when he hosted his golf tournament which benefited the Food Bank of the Rockies.

Following his basketball performances at Lawrence North High School in Indiana, Conley opted to attend Ohio State University for his college basketball career.

Averaging 11.3 points in his freshman year, he led the Big Ten Conference in assists and was placed as a runner-up in the NCAA Tournament.

While the team lost the year’s championship game, Conley delivered one of the best performances of his college career against Xavier.

Recording a total of 21 points, along with four assists, three blocks, and two steals, it marked him as an emerging talent to watch.

By 2007, he avoided signing with an agent to preserve his eligibility for the NBA Draft, changing his mind and signing with his father before it was drawn.

Early Professional Career With The Memphis Grizzlies

In 2007, Mike Conley launched his professional basketball career after being declared for the NBA draft along with Greg Oden and Daequan Cook.

As a team member with one of the richest NBA teams, he made his first appearance the following year and scored a season-high of 20 points against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Along with other Grizzlies players such as Marc Gasol, Conley quickly established a reputation for aggressive play, setting new personal bests over subsequent seasons.

Conley quickly followed this work with a career-high score of 30 points against the Los Angeles Clippers, including seven three-pointers.

Now ranked among the richest athletes in the world, Conley’s accomplishments include passing Gasol and becoming the all-time leading scorer for the Grizzlies.

Shortly after, he beat Mike Miller’s record for the most three-pointers with a high of 845, continuing his streak of headline-worthy achievements.

An injury to his Achilles heel put Conley out of the game for the remainder of the 2017 season, returning to the court in 2018.

With several more wins for the Grizzlies to his name, Mike Conley ended his lengthy run with the team and was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2019.

Transition To Utah Jazz In 2019

With his net worth equal to fellow basketball player Antawn Jamison, Mike Conley got off to an impressive start with his new team in Utah.

Defeating the Los Angeles Clippers among others in the 2019 season, Conley participated in a charity event while the NBA took a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021 saw another season-high record for Conley, scoring 33 points with seven assists and two rebounds in another victory over the Clippers.

For the first time in his career, Conley was named an All-Star and became a reserve for the 2021 NBA All-Star Game.

Later that year, he re-signed with the Jazz on a contract worth over $68 million, remaining with Utah until his trade to the Minnesota Timberwolves in early 2023.
