Hatton was raised in the Hattersley council estate in Hyde, Greater Manchester, and had his training at the Sale West ABC, Racecourse Estate.

Ricky attended Hattersley High School and participated in a trial for the youth team, while his grandfather and father were both football players for Rochdale.

He located a nearby boxing club in Hyde where he could practice and his entrance music is the Manchester City club anthem “Blue Moon,” sung by the band “Supra.”

When he was 14, he was taken to Manchester United’s Old Trafford stadium by his uncles Ged and Paul to watch the second fight between Nigel Benn and Chris Eubank.

After completing high school, he started working in the family carpet business, but his father forced him to become a salesman after he accidentally cut four of his fingers with a Stanley knife.

Hatton had a brief amateur career during which he competed in the 1996 AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships and won seven British titles. There was uproar when he was eliminated in the semi-finals.

Hatton won the match after receiving votes from four out of the five judges, but according to the scoring system, Hatton lost since the fifth judge gave the victory to Hatton’s opponent by 16 points.

When it was later discovered that the judge had accepted a bribe, Hatton left the amateur governing bodies and switched to the professional ranks at 18.

Career

Hatton made his professional debut against Colin McAuley on September 11, 1997, at Widnes’ Kingsway Leisure Centre.

In his second bout, Hatton competed in Madison Square Garden in New York as part of the undercard to Naseem Hamed, one of the richest boxers in the world, and Kevin Kelley.

He won by technical knockout (TKO) in the opening round and was soon competing on the undercard of fights between top British boxers, such as the 1998 bouts between Carl Thompson and Chris Eubank for the WBO cruiserweight title.

In May 1999, he defeated Dillon Carew to win the WBO Intercontinental light-welterweight title, earning him his first international title. Then, after defeating Giuseppe Lauri in a unification fight, he won the WBA Intercontinental championship. He competed against Jon Thaxton for the vacant British title the following month.

Hatton fought through the entire twelve rounds despite getting cut over his left eye in the opening round. This was the first time in his career that he had gone past six rounds, and he ultimately won on points.

Kostya Tszyu, then regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world, was defeated by Hatton on June 5, 2005, via TKO after the Australian failed to answer the bell for the twelfth round.

Hatton entered this battle as a significant underdog, and his victory marked his ascent to the top echelons of the boxing world. Ricky Hatton joins Frank Bruno, David Haye, and Tyson Fury as one of the best boxers out of Britain.

His career ended in 2019 after he suffered a brain bleed in a stoppage loss to Cletus Seldin.

Early Life

Zabdiel Judah was born on the 27th of October, 1977, in New York. Judah began boxing when he was 6 years old. He compiled an amateur record of 110 – 5. He was a two-time US national champion and three-time New York Golden Gloves Champion.

In 1996, Judah won the PAL National Championship. He beat Ishe Smith and Hector Camacho, Jr., but lost to David Díaz in the finals of the Olympic trials, thus failing to qualify for the Olympic boxing team.

Career

After starting his boxing training as a rambunctious six-year-old, Judah built an impressive amateur record of 110–5.

He became an American champion, winning the US National Championship twice and the New York Golden Gloves champion three times.

In 1996, he secured the PAL National Championship and achieved wins over top opponents like Ishe Smith and Hector Camacho Jr.

He reached the finals of the Olympic trials but lost to David Díaz, attending the 1996 Olympic Games as an alternate despite not qualifying directly.

TKO Professional Debut Entrance

Zab started his professional career as a light welterweight, debuting on September 20, 1996, and defeating Michael Johnson by TKO.

He won the USBA Light Welterweight title with a convincing win over Micky Ward and then successfully defended it against Darryl Tyson.

His title defense was followed by Zab claiming the Interim IBF Light Welterweight title by convincingly knocking out Wilfredo Negron.

He followed this by defeating Jan Piet Bergman on February 12, 2000, to win the vacant IBF Light Welterweight title.

Confirming his status, he defended the IBF title five times, with victories over Junior Witter, Terron Millett, Hector Quiroz, Reggie Green, and Allan Vester.

It didn’t all go his way, though. In 2001, he lost the Undisputed Light Welterweight Championship to Kostya Tszyu by TKO, his first professional loss.

Kostya, considered one of the best, if not the best, pound-for-pound fighter at the time, was beaten by Ricky Hatton from the UK.

In his first defense of the WBO Title, Judah knocked out Jaime Rangel in the first round in December 2003.

Going Up A Weight Class

Zab packed on some muscle and fought Cory Spinks for the Undisputed Welterweight Championship in 2004 but lost by a unanimous decision.

Judah defeated Rafael Pineda by split decision later in 2004 and won the rematch against Spinks in 2005, becoming the new Undisputed Welterweight Champion.

The following year, Judah defeated Cosme Rivera in his first fight as the undisputed champion by third-round knockout in 2005.

Cosme and Andre Berto had an ongoing rivalry, with Cosme beating the stronger Berto in an unexpected win in 2007.

In an unfortunate turn of events, Judah lost to Carlos Baldomir in a significant upset in January 2006, losing his undisputed championship status.

This was followed by a loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. by a unanimous decision in April 2006, which featured a controversial in-ring melee.

He then lost to Miguel Cotto by TKO in June 2007, after a brutal fight, redeeming himself by winning his second IBF title in 2011.

Making A Comeback

It took him four years to make his comeback. In 2011, he defeated Kaizer Mabuza via TKO to win the vacant IBF Light Welterweight title.

Not long after, Judah lost to Amir Khan in a unification bout in 2011, knocked out by a body shot in the fifth round.

After losing to Amir Khan, Zab Judah fought undefeated Vernon Paris, starting strong and hurting Paris in the first round.

Judah dominated the fight with his hand speed, and in the 9th round, he hurt Paris with a left hand, followed by a flurry of punches, leading to a referee stoppage.

Judah’s next bout was against Danny García, scheduled for February 9 but rescheduled to April 27, 2013, due to García’s rib injury.

The fight against García was marked by pre-fight confrontations, with both fighters delivering strong technical performances.

In January 2017, Judah returned from a hiatus to fight Jorge Luis Munguia, winning via 2nd-round TKO.

Judah fought Noel Mejia Rincon in Calgary a year later, winning a 10-round unanimous decision despite being hurt in the 6th round.

On June 7, 2019, Judah, at age 41, was stopped in the 11th round by Cletus Seldin, leading to hospitalization for a brain bleed, likely ending his career.

Mayweather won unanimously after knocking Marquez down in the second round.

However, this fight would become one of the best-selling PPV matches without Oscar De La Hoya and made over $52 million.

After his defeat, Marquez began negotiating a rematch with Juan Diaz, which he ultimately won unanimously.

Marquez then defended his lightweight titles against Michael Katsidis and became the oldest world champion in the division’s history.

He would then take on Pacquiao once more but ultimately lost via a controversial majority decision called “The Robbery of the Year” by Ring Magazine.

Marquez’s next match was against Timothy Bradley, whom he lost by split decision, a decision he staunchly opposed.

After that, he took on Mike Alvarado, who he was able to do best by unanimous decision.

Following that fight, Marquez was inactive for several years before retiring in 2017.

While he admitted that he didn’t want to leave the sport, prior injuries forced his hand and left him little choice.

That said if Mike Tyson can get back in the ring in his 50s, who can say whether or not we’ll see Marquez return sometime in the future?
