Early Life

Regilio discovered his passion for boxing after finding out that his stepfather was a professional boxer.

The family moved to the Netherlands in 1973 and Regilio lived in Rotterdam-West at first and later, attended Jan Schildkamp boxing school, in Hoogvliet.

He competed in boxing tournaments as an amateur and, in 1987, won a bronze medal at the European Championships for amateurs.

The following year, he qualified for the 1988 Olympic Games and on September 18, 1988, he defeated, then-world champion, Kelcie Banks.

In a fight that was anticipated to go all the champion’s way, Tuur nailed Banks with a massive right that knocked him unconscious. Despite the padded headgear, Banks crashed to the floor and lay motionless for many minutes as the ring doctor worked on him.

At 6 feet, Banks towered over Tuur and the commentators thought his reach advantage would be a huge advantage. Unfortunately for Banks, Tuur easily got inside, slipping his straight right with deft head movement and loaded up a right hook that Banks never saw coming.

After his performance in the Olympics, Tuur relocated to New York in 1988 where he turned pro.

Career

Regilio won his first professional title, the New York State championship, in 1991, and in 1992, he won the European title in Ahoy.

He then went on to capture the World Boxing Organization’s JR Lightweight world title in 1994, successfully defending his championship title six times and earning the Ring of Championships award.

Regilio wrote his autobiography “Regilio: Life Part One, where the rain is chilly” with the aid of author Ed Van Eden, in 2005 and then released a sequel.

He was a participant in a Dutch television program called “Stars Jumping on Saturday” in 2014, but avoided television after that.
