Introduction
Steve Cohen is an American hedge-fund manager and owner of the MLB’s New York Mets with an estimated net worth of $16 Billion.
Career
After graduating from John L. Miller Great Neck North High School in 1974, Steve Cohen attended Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania. He graduated in 1978 with a degree in economics and had a friend help him open a brokerage account with $1,000 of his tuition money.
When he left school, he got a job on Wall Street as a junior trader at Gruntal & Co., and on his first day, he made an $8,000 profit. Cohen would go on to start making the company around $100,000 per day, and he eventually managed six traders and a $75 million portfolio. Despite living in one of the most expensive cities in the world, Cohen quickly made a name and a fortune.
SAC Capital Advisors
By 1984, Steve Cohen was managing a trading group at Gruntal & Co., and he started his own company, SAC. Cohen started SAC Capital Advisors using $10 million of his own money, which grew into one of the biggest hedge funds. Known for its rapid trading, SAC quickly grew and in 2009 managed $14 billion in total equity, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing.
In December 2009, Steve Cohen and his brother Donald were sued by Steve’s ex-wife for racketeering and insider trading. On top of one of the most expensive divorces, Steve was now forced to contend with an investigation into his business practices.
Investigating SEC Capital
While his initial case was dismissed by a Lower Manhattan court, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals revived it soon after. It was eventually found that Steve Cohen had concealed $5.5 million during his separation agreement from his wife before their divorce. However, this investigation also led to the arrest of one of Cohen’s closest friends at SAC Capital, and two insider trading settlements were found.
In November 2012, Cohen was implicated in an insider trading scandal involving SAC manager Mathew Martoma. Cohen was charged with failing to supervise Martoma, but he was able to settle for $1.8 billion and was prohibited from managing outside money until 2018. That said, like Billy McFarland, this scandal did little to slow Cohen down, and it didn’t take long for him to get back into business.
Point72 Ventures
Two years after his settlement, Steve Cohen founded Point72 Ventures, a venture capital fund geared toward early-stage investments. Cohen contributed $1 million to Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017, having previously donated $2 million to Chris Christie’s Super PAC.
In 2020, he started negotiating a 97% stake in the New York Mets, one of the richest MLB teams, and the sale was approved in October. His hedge fund, Point72, put $2.75 billion into Melvin Capital in 2021, as a result of the GameStop short squeeze.
However, this led to a lot of backlash and threats towards him and his family, which caused him to deactivate his Twitter account. The same year, he donated $500,000 to a Super PAC supporting Andrew Yang and a further $1.5 million to a Super PAC for Eric Adams.
Most recently, Vincent D’Onofrio portrayed him in the 2023 movie Dumb Money, a biographical drama about the short squeeze.
Estimated Net Worth
Steve Cohen’s net worth is $16 Billion.

He would earn $1.7 million in 2017 and $1.8 million in 2018 with the Nuggets before being traded halfway through the 2019/20 season to the Minnesota Timberwolves. Beasley retained $1.6 million from the Nuggets for the year and earned $925,000 playing at Minnesota.
The following year, Beasley signed a new four-year deal with the Timberwolves worth $60 million, which increased his average annual salary to $15 million. He earned $13.6 million in 2020 and $14.4 million in 2021.

Fines & Legal Issues
In September 2020, Maliik Beasley was involved in an altercation outside his home in Minnesota. A family had accidentally parked outside Beasley’s house while on a tour, and Malik approached them, allegedly pointing a rifle at the family. The police were called, and after conducting a search on his property, they found several firearms and marijuana.
Beasley was arrested for felony threats of violence and fifth-degree drug possession. He pleaded guilty, and while the drug charge was dropped, he still received a 120-day jail sentence. After his conviction, he was placed on probation and required to attend an anger management program.
The financial impact of the situation, aside from his legal fees and potential lost sponsors, was a 12-game NBA suspension without pay. League rules state that as long as the suspension doesn’t exceed 20 games, the player will lose 1/145 of their base salary per game missed. This equated to Beasley losing approximately $1.65 million in compensation that season.
On-Court Fines
On the court, Malik’s highest fine was $35,000 in 2022 for making inappropriate contact with Drew Eubanks during a game against the Portland Trail Blazers. He’s also received twenty-one $2,000 fines for technical fouls and ejections, totaling an additional $42,000.
