Introduction
Kehlani is an American professional singer, dancer, and songwriter with an estimated net worth of $6 Million.
She earned recognition through her band Poplyfe, which finished fourth place in the sixth season of America’s Got Talent. Kehlani has considerable popularity and immense love and appreciation from people worldwide.
Apart from being nominated for a Grammy, she has also received nominations for the BET Awards and holds about 3.8 million fans on Instagram.
Career
Kehlani Ashley Parrish was born in California but was adopted and raised by her aunt due to her parent’s unfortunate drug addictions.
In the years following her father’s passing, Kehlani attended Oakland School for the Arts in hopes of a career in ballet and modern dance. Although she aspired to train as a dancer at the Julliard School, she suffered a knee injury at 16, which led to her singing career.
America’s Got Talent Audition
While living with her aunt, Kehlani listened to artists such as Lauryn Hill and Erykah Badu, who still inspire her.
When she was 14, Kehlani was recruited as the lead vocalist of a local pop cover band, Poplyfe, setting the tone for her future career. Within two years, the group performed in various cities, and in 2011, they auditioned for America’s Got Talent, coming in fourth place.
During the final appearance, Piers Morgan told Kehlani she has extreme talent but doesn’t need the group, which led to her leaving Poplyfe.
Over six months, due to legal reasons, Kehlani avoided doing anything music-related and ended up homeless, couch-surfing at different houses for nearly a year.
While still a senior in high school, Kehlani moved to Los Angeles, and in 2013, she met Nick Cannon, the host of America’s Got Talent. Kehlani was asked to join a rap group, but she ultimately didn’t like the group’s direction, so she moved back to Oakland.
A few months later, she released her first solo track on SoundCloud, “ANTISUMMERLUV,” which gained Nick Cannon’s attention and bought her studio time.
She then released her first mixtape, “Cloud 9,” featuring guests like Kyle Dion, and also went to work with record producer Jahaan Sweet.
The mixtape ranked 28th on Complex’s list of the “50 Best Albums of 2014”, as well as listed in Pitchfork’s “Overlooked Mixtapes 2014”.
Headlining For G-Eazy
At the same time, Kehlani opened for American rapper G-Eazy on his tour, and a mixtape she released placed on the Billboard charts.
Her new mixtape, “You Should Be Here,” debuted at number five on the Billboard Top R&B/hip-hop Albums chart.
She worked with artists Chance The Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid and soon after signed a deal with Atlantic Records.
Kehlani’s success eventually led to her nomination for a Best Urban Contemporary Album Grammy for the song “You Should Be Here.”
A year later, Kehlani was featured on Zayn’s single “Wrong,” and their song “Gangsta” was featured in Suicide Squad, reaching 41 on the Hot 100 list.
That same year, she appeared on Eminem’s single “Nowhere Fast” and revealed the title of her debut studio album, “SweetSexySavage.”
Following the release of her album, she went on tour with Demi Lovato and Halsey and featured on Charlie Puth’s single, “Done for Me.”
Kehlani featured on Cardi B’s single “Ring,” with the song ranking 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, her first to reach the top 40.
Collaborating With Zedd
She released her next mixtape, “While We Wait,” and collaborated with Zedd on his single “Good Thing” in September of 2019.
She collaborated with Justin Bieber on his single “Get Me” and announced her third studio album, “Blue Water Road.”
After releasing the lead single “Alter” from her third studio album, Kehlani embarked on the Blue Water Road Trip tour featuring Rico Nasty.
She also headlined concert performances at the 2023 WNBA and MLS All-Star Games and launched “After Hours” from her next album.
She confirmed her relationship with NBA player Kyrie Irving, but they shortly broke up following her attempted suicide and other unknown issues.
Following her recovery, she spoke about her sexuality, stating that she would go by the pronoun she/ they, as that felt more meaningful.
After that, in a live stream, Kehlani publicly identified as lesbian after identifying as queer and pansexual in the past.
