Early Life
Michael Lynn Evans III was born on the 21st of August, 1993, in Galveston, Texas.
In school, he played basketball and football and ran track for the Tors athletic teams. In basketball, he averaged 18.3 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists as a senior. He only played football during his senior year, earning second-team District 24-4A honors after making 25 receptions for 648 yards and seven touchdowns.
Career
Mike Evans forwent his final two college seasons to declare himself for the 2014 NFL Draft, and many projected him to be a top-10 pick.
During the Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, one of the richest NFL teams, selected him seventh overall, one pick after his former college teammate Jake Matthew. He was the second wide receiver chosen behind Sammy Watkins, who the Buffalo Bills selected.
In June, Evans signed a four-year contract for $14.6 million and debuted professionally in December against the Carolina Panthers.
Tearing Up The Gridiron
During his first season, Mike Evans became the first rookie receiver since Randy Moss to play three consecutive games with 100 yards and one touchdown.
For his skills, he earned the National Football Conference Offensive Player of the Week Award and finished with 68 receptions and 12 touchdowns.
In 2015, he missed the season opener with a hamstring injury but came back strong to finish with 1,206 yards and three touchdowns.
The following year, he made five receptions and a touchdown during the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons.
Soon after, he became the first player in Buccaneers’ history to catch a touchdown pass in three consecutive games.
In November, he became the fourth player in NFL history to start his career with three consecutive seasons with 1,000 receiving yards.
If that wasn’t enough, he was also the first receiver in history to have two receiving touchdowns in the first quarter of a game.
The Buccaneers re-signed Evans in 2017, getting him closer to becoming one of the richest athletes in the world with a $33 million deal.
Rising Through The Ranks
In 2017, Mike Evans started off strong but ended up suspended for one game after Week 8 after getting in a fight with Saints’ rookie Marshon Lattimore.
However, in Week 17, he became the third receiver in NFL history to have four consecutive 1,000-yard years, and he finished with 1,0001 receiving yards total.
Evans signed another five-year contract with the Buccaneers in 2018 for $82.5 million and $55 million guaranteed.
That season, he joined Randy Moss and A.J. Green as the only receivers in history with five consecutive seasons with over 1,000 receiving yards.
He also became the youngest receiver to reach 6,000 receiving yards and broke the Buccaneers record for the most receiving yards in a single season.
Evans was then elected to his second Pro Bowl, as an injury replacement for Julio Jones, and became the first Buccaneer receiver to make multiple Pro Bowls.
Despite having a slow start in 2019, Evans came back in Week 3 to catch eight passes and a 67-yard touchdown.
After becoming the youngest player to reach 7,000 receiving yards, Evans became the second player in history to have six consecutive seasons with 1,000 yards.
In December, he made his third Pro Bowl but was placed on injured reserve soon after due to a hamstring injury.
A Super Bowl Champion
Although he was still recovering from his injury in 2020, he was able to catch a touchdown from Tom Brady at the start of the season.
He then helped the Buccaneers make their first playoff spot since 2007, and he became the first wide receiver with 1,000 yards in seven consecutive seasons.
In the 2020-21 Wild Card Round of the playoffs, Evans broke the franchise record for receiving yards earned during a playoff game.
After making it to Super Bowl LV, Evans caught one pass in the 31-9 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs to earn his first championship victory.
During the 2021 season, Evans again exceeded 1,000 yards for the eighth consecutive time and finished the season with a record 14 touchdowns.
Unfortunately, in 2022, he was suspended for a game after another fight with Marshon Lattimore but returned to win NFC Offensive Player of the Week.
Heading into 2023, the final year of his contract, Evans stated he wanted an extension, though he never got an offer.
By week 12, he became the second player behind Jerry Rice with 10 consecutive seasons of 1,000 receiving yards.
He finished the season with 79 receptions, 13 touchdowns, and 1,255 yards before officially becoming a free agent.
