Nigel Ernest James Mansell was born August 8, 1953, in Baughton, near Upton-upon-Severn, Worcestershire, England.
As a child, Nigel grew up in Hall Green, Birmingham, and while his racing career started off slowly, he invested his own money to help him rise through the ranks.
After finding success in karting, Nigel moved to the Formula Ford Series, and in 1976 he won six of the nine races he competed in.
In 1978, Mansell started racing in Formula Three, and it was there that his driving impressed Colin Chapman, the owner of Lotus, who later would invite him to become a test driver for his team in Formula One.
Career
Nigel Mansell started his Formula One career in 1980, and he raced for four seasons with Lotus before being hired by Frank Williams in 1985.
The same year, Mansell broke the unfortunate record for the highest-speed crash in Formula One history and earned his first victory in 72 starts at the European Grand Prix.
Mansell continued to race for Williams until 1989, when he became the last Ferrari driver to be personally selected by Enzo Ferrari, the founder of the Scuderia Ferrari Grand Prix racing team.
He would remain with Ferrari until 1991, when he ultimately transferred back to Williams to continue his career, despite considering retirement.
The following year, Mansell started out the season with five consecutive victories, setting a record that wouldn’t be beaten until 2004; he also finally won the Formula One World Championship.
