His father instead ran an auto repair business and did his best to encourage Ryan to become a race car driver. His mother was also very fond of race car driving and supported Ryan in his dreams.
A few months after discovering his passion, Ryan had already driven in his first quarter midget race at the age of 4 and a half years old. Soon, driving became everything to Ryan and once he turned seven, the family could see the talent the child had.
When Ryan turned 17, he had already become a midget racer champion. Not only was Ryan a genius on the track, but he also graduated from South Bend La-Salle High School with honors in 1996.
Career
While continuing to race, Ryan decided to study engineering at Purdue University and, during that time, raced USAC sprint cars and won the USAC Silver Bullet Series title.
This achievement made Ryan Newman the first driver to win all three USAC divisions in the events’ history – including the sprint, midget, and Silver Bullet titles.
With his multiple wins, Ryan decided that he wanted to race on the Winston Cup circuit, which was a challenge for him as he had to very quickly learn how to drive stock cars.
Even with his lack of prior stock car experience, he still managed to get signed by the Roger Penske team in 2000.
He finally graduated with a degree in vehicle structural engineering from Purdue in 2001 and continued to drive part-time for Penske.
This marked the beginning of an impressively successful career as a professional race car driver.
Ryan’s official Winston Cup rookie year began with an opening race at the Phoenix International Raceway.
He continued to race for Penske and was sponsored by Alltel in the No. 12 Ford, but had a rough first 6 months.
Newman won the New Hampshire 300 and also established a rookie record for the most poles won in a single year, winning at least six of those races.
Ryan was voted Winston Cup Rookie of the Year in 2002, after winning the Winston Cup in North Carolina.
The Penske team moved from Ford to Dodge cars in 2003, and Newman drove the No. 12 Dodge for Penske. He was unharmed in a rollover incident at Daytona, and he did not finish higher than ninth until he won the Samsung/Radio Shack 500.
He has most recently driven very successfully for Roush Fenway Racing, the former home of Greg Biffle in the 1990s.
