The heirs of Ed Townsend, Gaye’s co-writer, filed the lawsuit in 2017 seeking $100 million, arguing that Sheeran used fundamental parts of the track, particularly its rhythm and chord progressions. Sheeran strongly denied these claims, stating that the similarities were just common chord structures and rhythmic patterns found in most popular songs and that he wrote the track in a few minutes with co-writer Amy Wadge after an emotional conversation about their life experiences. Sheeran’s attorney, Ilene Farkas, also stated that chord progressions are the basic building blocks of a song and cannot be owned by anyone.

The plaintiffs also hinted at a confession from Sheeran, as they played footage of him performing a mashup of the two songs at one of his concerts. However, Sheeran clapped back, stating that “he’d be quite an idiot to stand on stage in front of 25,000 people” and do that.

Nonetheless, in May 2023, after several years of back and forth, the jury ruled in Sheeran’s favor, finally clearing his name of any infringement of Gaye’s “Let’s Get It On.”
