Miikka Sakari Kiprusoff was born October 26, 1976, in Turku, Finland, and he is of Russian descent through his grandfather.

While not much is known about his childhood, we do know about his early playing career with the TPS, who he played two seasons with in the Finnish junior league between 1993 and 1995.

During this time, he led his team to the SM-liiga championship and was named the best goaltender and best player of the 1999 playoffs.

Kiprusoff then moved to the United States in 199 and joined the San Jose Sharks’ AHL affiliate team, the Kentucky Thoroughblades.



After making his debut with Kentucky during the 2000-01 season, he quickly made a name for himself as a talented goaltender, earning his first NHL win against the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim.

The following season, Kiprusoff got the chance to become a starter, but due to a rough start, he ended up being regulated to a backup role.

Despite his lackluster season, Kiprusoff was offered a new one-year contract for $800k, which he accepted.

During the 2003-04 season, rumors of a trade started circulating, and Kiprusoff became frustrated that he wasn’t allowed to play during the first quarter of the season.
