Saku Antero Koivu was born November 23, 1974, in Tarku, Finland.
Saku was born to Jukka and Tuire Koivu and has a younger brother named Mikko Koivu, whom he enjoyed playing ice hockey with as a child.
Koivu states that he had a wonderful upbringing with a supportive family who helped prepare him for his career today.
Unfortunately, not much is known about his childhood until he turned 18 and debuted at the 1992 Finnish championships with Turun Palloseura.
Career
After his debut, he received lots of media attention for his stunning play after winning Finnish titles in both 1993 and 1995.
He played with the Turun Palloseura up until 1995 and played for the Finnish national team from 1993, being selected as captain from 1998 onwards.
Saku was finally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1993 and eventually joined the team officially in 1995.
He was with the team for 14 seasons and was selected as captain in 1999 due to his skill and natural leadership ability.
Throughout his time with the Montreal Canadiens, he received many awards and was voted into the NHL All-Star Game in 1998.
