René Pérez Joglar was born on the 23rd of February, 1978, in Puerto Rico. Joglar’s mother is a Puerto Rican actress who was part of the Teatro del 60. In her younger years, she belonged to Juventud Independista Universitaria. His father is a labor lawyer, musician, and writer. 

He studied in the Escuela Libre de Música. When he was 17 years old, he founded the band Latin Temp alongside Louis García. He went on to study Political Science and Law at the University of Puerto Rico. After he graduated, he founded a law firm.

 

Career 

In 2004, Residente formed the group Calle 13. After struggling for a few years, the pair signed to White Lion Records, which issued their controversial singles ‘Querido F.B.I.’ and ‘Se Vale To-To.’ 

Calle 13 wen ton to become one of the best selling groups in Puerto Rican history. They inspired an entire generation of rappers and musicians with their videos, concerts, and recordings. Their great reputation became one of the artists, statesmen, and national heroes. 

They began to work with other famous artists such as Nelly Furtado, Alejandro Sanz, and Cuba’s Orishas, to name a few. As their fame grew, the band’s ambitions knew no bounds, and they added elements of salsa, funk, and jazz to their sound. 

In 2009, Calle 13 performed at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico for the release of their third album ‘Los de Atrás Vienen Conmigo’. The following year, Residente once again became the subject of debate when the duo traveled to Cuba. 

In 2017, Residente’s self-titled documentary was released. The following year, dropped the single ‘Sexo’ in collaboration with producer Dillon Francis.

In 2019, Residente released the single ‘Bellacoso,’ which featured Bad Bunny. Daddy Yankee inspired the song, and the music video was filmed in Puerto Rico.
