Early Life
Maxwell M. Scherzer was born on the 27th of July, 1984, in Chesterfield.
He attended and played baseball, football, and basketball at Parkway Central High School in his hometown. He made up for whatever he lacked in raw talent with the fiercely competitive nature that would distinguish his athletic career.
One of his high school coaching influences was basketball coach Rick Kirby, who stressed fundamentals and was defense-oriented.
Career Overview
The Arizona Diamondbacks selected Scherzer with the 11th overall pick of the 2006 Major League Baseball Draft. However, he and his agent, Scott Boras, failed to reach an agreement with the club. Scherzer thus began his professional career with the Fort Worth Cats of the independent American Association.
In 2008, Scherzer made his MLB debut against the Houston Astros. He came on in relief and pitched 4 1⁄3 perfect innings while striking out seven.
The following year, he was traded to the Detroit Tigers along with Daniel Schlereth, Phil Coke, and Austin Jackson as part of a three-team trade that brought Ian Kennedy and Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks and Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees.
In 2014, Scherzer and the Tigers agreed on a $15.525 million salary for the 2014 season, avoiding arbitration for the third straight year. He was initially going to play for Team USA in the 2017 World Baseball Classic. However, in early January 2017, it was reported that he would not be able to play in the tournament after suffering a stress fracture in the knuckle of his right ring finger.

When Max Scherzer first signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2006, he received a $3 million signing bonus. The following year, he signed a four-year, $4.3 million rookie contract, paying him an average annual salary of just under $1.1 million. Scherzer earned $1.9 million for the first two years of the deal before being traded to the Detroit Tigers. In 2009, he earned $1.45 million, followed by $950,000 for the contract’s final year.
From 2011 to 2014, Scherzer signed multiple consecutive one-year contracts with the Tigers, with his annual salary reaching $15.5 million by 2014.
In 2015, Max inked the most valuable deal of his career: a seven-year, $210 million contract with the Washington Nationals. The agreement boosted his average annual salary to $30 million; however, a deal was made for half of the total contract value to be deferred. As a result, Scherzer has consistently been paid $15 million/year from 2015 until the present day. He will continue receiving annual payments of $15 million until 2028.
In 2022, Max signed a three-year, $130 million contract with the New York Mets, which paid him an average annual salary of $43.3 million. The contract broke the MLB record for the highest average annual value at the time. In the latter two years of the agreement, Scherzer was injured and unable to play, but he retained the contract’s full value.
This resulted in a situation where Scherzer was earning almost $60 million/year for the final three years of his career, thanks to his $43.3 million salary combined with the $15 million annual deferred payments he was receiving from the Nationals.
During his MLB career, Max Scherzer earned $314.6 million in salary and bonuses. However, he still has a $60 million deferred salary that will be paid over the next four years. This will bring his total earnings to $375 million by 2028.
Real Estate
In August 2015, Max Scherzer purchased an 8,264-square-foot, five-bedroom home in Mc Lean, Virginia, for $5.2 million. In October 2020, he returned the property to the market with an asking price of $15 million. Scherzer secured $15 million for the house in November 2021.
