Introduction
John Force is an American NHRA drag racer.
Force is a 16-time NHRA and 1-time AHRA Funny Car champion driver and a 21-time champion car owner.
He owns and is a driver for John Force Racing.
Before he made a career racing, he graduated from Bell Gardens High School and briefly attended Cerritos Junior College to play football.
John Force’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $20 Million.
Early Life
John Harold Force was born on May 4, 1949, in California.
He is the son of Harold and Betty Ruth Force. Force survived childhood polio with therapy and the perseverance of his mother and family.
Force played football in high school and attended Cerritos College.
He is one of six children. John has five siblings—Walker, Louie, Tom (now deceased), and Cindy Hem, all older than John.
Career
Kicking off his career, John Force won 67 of the 203 NHRA national events between 1987 and 1996.
In 2000, he was still sponsored by BP’s Castrol brand, a relationship that began back in 1985 and continued until 2014.
At this time, Force had also come to be known as Brute Force after an unsponsored car he drove during his early years, which he’d given the name.
Although he’d been racing since 1978 and had become one of the richest racing drivers in the world, Force was far from done on the track.
A Racing Legend
John Force won five events in 2005 and finished third in the championship standings, just behind Gary Scelzi and Ron Capps. >
The following season, he won his fourth NHRA World Funny Car Championship, overtaking Capps in the quarter-finals.
After an early crash in 2007, Force began his next year poorly but was able to make a comeback and win the NHRA Thunder Valley Nationals.
In 2008, Force had one of his worst seasons on record, finishing seventh and moving out of the top five placings for the first time since his early days.
Despite this, he helped develop safety measures for dragsters and funny cars, such as shutting down the fuel pump and deploying a parachute should the engine backfire.
These measures would help prevent accidents and deaths, such as the death of Scott Kalitta, and they became mandatory for the 2009 season.
Like Richard Petty in NASCAR, John Force’s contributions to drag racing have helped him build a lasting legacy.
Not Slowing Down
Although he was getting older, John Force was having too much fun driving the most expensive cars in the world to retire.
In 2009, Force finished outside the top five once more, though his daughter Ashley came in second.
However, despite his low placing, Force still won his 16th overall championship, giving him the most wins as a car owner in NHRA history.
In 2010, he won the season opener at the Auto Club Raceway and once again secured the championship, becoming the track’s oldest-ever winner.
The following season, John Force finished seventh once again, and in 2012, he finished fifth while his daughter, Courtney, won the Rookie of the Year award.
Force would win the NHRA Funny Car Championship again in 2013 and entered into a new partnership with Chevrolet in 2015.
He won four races in 2016 and debuted the new Chevrolet Camaro SSbody at the Kansas Nationals in Topeka.
John Force’s Recent Career
Entering the 2018 season, John Force could only win once at Denver but returned in 2019 to win his 150th race in Seattle.
That same year, his daughter Courtney retired from driving, while John went on to be runner-up at the Pomona season opener in 2020.
Unlike Connie Kalitta, Force had no plans to stop racing and most recently won the Saturday Final in Arizona in 2024.
Despite turning 75 this year, John Force is still going strong behind the wheel and is expected to continue racing for as long as he can.
