Kendrick Lamar Duckworth was born in Compton, California, on June 17, 1987.
Growing up, his family was impoverished, and he was primarily raised on welfare and in government-funded housing. He attended McNair Elementary and Centennial High School and was known for his exceptional grades.
Career
In high school, Kendrick Lamar started freestyle rapping and recorded five mixtapes in the early 2000s. After working as a security guard, he formed a friendship with Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q, with whom he started the group Black Hippy.
In 2006, he signed a development deal with Def Jam Records and was featured on two of The Game’s singles. However, the label ultimately let him go after an encounter with Jay-Z, for which he said he “wasn’t ready.”
Breaking Into The Industry
Despite being let go by the label, Kendrick Lamar began touring with The Game in 2009, after which he released his eponymous EP. He then negotiated with Warner/Chappell Music and released the mixtape Overly Dedicated in 2010. This tape caught the attention of Dr. Dre, who contacted Lamar to have him work with Snoop Dogg on his album Detox.
Dre also signed Lamar to his label, Aftermath Entertainment, after being encouraged to be J. Cole and other artists. Lamar released his debut album, Section.80, in 2011, which peaked at no. 113 on the Billboard 200 chart.

His third album, To Pimp a Butterfly, was released in 2015, and it earned him a second Lyracist of the Year Award. The same year, his remix of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” became his first No. 1 single on the Hot 100.
In 2016, he released his first compilation album, Untitled Unmastered, which debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 and became a critical success. His fourth album, Damn, was released in 2017, and he headlined the Coachella Valley Music Festival soon after. Damn became his most commercially successful album, and it enjoyed four weeks at the top of the Billboard 200.
A Superstar Rapper
In 2018, Kendrick Lamar opened the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, and he won five awards during the show. His album Damn also earned him a Pulitzer Prize for Music, the first outside of classical and jazz genres to do so.
Lamar launched the creative entity PGLang in 2020 and signed a worldwide administration agreement with Universal.
In 2022, he co-headlined the Super Bowl halftime show, joining Eminem, Snoop Dog, 50 Cent, and Dr. Dre on stage. Not long after, he dropped his fifth album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers, and every track charted on the Hot 100.
