Shawn Mathis Wayans was born on the 19th of January, 1971, in New York.

Wayans, Howell Stouten Wayans, was a supermarket manager. His mother, Elvira Alethia, was a homemaker as well as a social worker.

His siblings include Keenen Ivory, Damon Sr., Marlon Wayans, Kim Wayans, Elvira Wayans, and Nadia Wayans.

He completed his graduation from Bayard Rustin High School for Humanities in the year 1989.

With his family background firmly rooted in the entertainment industry, it was perhaps inevitable that Shawn Wayans would soon follow suit.

This exposure to some of the richest comedians in the world gave him a head start, launching his career as a DJ on the Fox show, In Living Color.

Early Career & Sitcom Origins

During his stint on In Living Color, appearing as DJ SW-1, he collaborated frequently with his brothers Dwayne, Damon, Marlon, and sister Kim.

This exposure paved the way for his most successful project at the time, the sitcom The Wayans Bros., broadcast from 1995 to 1999.

Focusing on the exploits of the brothers, who owned a local newsstand, it proved to be a huge success with fans until ratings later declined.

Along with his brother Marlon Wayans, the show allowed Shawn to develop the necessary writing skills that would enable him to break into Hollywood.

Meanwhile, the nationwide syndication of Wayans Bros. helped to boost his impressive net worth and give him the influence needed to pursue new projects.

He also appeared in the short-lived comedy series Waynehead from 1996 to 1997, along with a guest appearance as himself in The Parent ‘Hood.

With the success of his television sitcoms raising his profile and bankability, Shawn Wayans and his brother Marlon took their first script to Hollywood.

Their first major movie, Don’t Be a Menace to South Central While Drinking Your Juice in the Hood, saw him serving as a producer as well as a writer.

Wayans enjoyed great commercial success with the Scary Movie film released in 2000, a parody of popular horror franchises that he also wrote.

The sequel, Scary Movie 2, featured American soap star Tori Spelling in the cast, taking in millions of dollars at the global box office.

Shawn Wayans continued his low-brow but popular comedy style in the 2004 comedy White Chicks, which was panned by critics but hit the box office charts.

It is notable for picking up five Razzie Award nominations, along with an additional five nominations at the 2004 Stinkers Bad Movie Awards.

While Shawn Wayans has received little in the way of critical acclaim for his comedy movies, their success has made him sought after for other media appearances.

He joined his brother Marlon as co-host of the 2000 MTV Video Music Awards, where he introduced some of the richest singers in the world to the stage.

This included Janet Jackson, who appeared to perform her hit song “Doesn’t Really Matter,” and Eminem for his rendition of “The Real Slim Shady,”

Shawn Wayans also provided voice acting duties on television projects, including Happily Ever After: Fairy Tales for Every Child, and Thugaboo: Sneaker Madness.

He later reprised his voice work on the sequel, Thugaboo: Miracle on D-Roc’s Street, which was released in 2008 along with Legends Ball.
