As of March 2023, John McEnroe’s net worth is estimated to be $100 Million.

Early Life

John McEnroe was born February 16, 1959, in Wiesbaden, West Germany.

His father was serving in the US Air Force base in Wiesbaden and his mother was a surgical nurse.

In 1960, the family left Europe and moved back to the US, establishing themselves in Douglaston, Queens, New York where his father had found work.

At age nine, McEnroe’s parents registered him in the “Eastern Lawn Tennis Association,” and he quickly started competing in local competitions.

When he was twelve years old, the pair accepted him as a student at the “Port Washington Tennis Academy” in Long Island, New York.

However, because of his pranks and rebellious nature, the academy disciplined him and he was later expelled when he was sixteen.

After that, his parents registered him at the “Cove Racquet Club,” where his instructor Tony Palafox joined in to train with the potential superstar.

Career

In 1977, the precocious 18-year-old rookie and Mary Carillo took home the French Open mixed doubles crown, and McEnroe’s name was on everyone’s lips.

He then took aim at the junior Wimbledon title but changed his mind and shifted gears after qualifying for the men’s tournament.

The previously amateur McEnroe shocked everyone by making it to the Wimbledon semi-finals before Jimmy Connors defeated him.

He won the National Collegiate Athletic Association singles championship in 1978 and contributed to his school’s team, the “Cardinals,” winning the team championship.

In that year, he became a professional, signed an endorsement contract with Sergio Tacchini, and joined the ATP tour.

The greatest match he ever played during that era was McEnroe’s first Wimbledon men’s singles final versus Björn Borg, who claimed his fifth straight championship.

However, McEnroe won his first Wimbledon singles championship in 1981 by defeating the five-time defending champion, Björn Borg.

After a tumultuous career on courts around the world, he left the professional circuit in the latter half of 1992 with a singles world ranking of 20.

Nevertheless, he is still active in tennis as a regular on the Seniors Tour and as a tennis announcer – a career he began in 1995.

He was named captain of the US Davis Cup squad in September 1999 but resigned in November 2000.

John then branched out into writing songs and created “The Johnny Smyth Band,” where he served as lead singer and guitarist.

He played guitar for bands like “Noise Upstairs” and “Package,” and appeared as himself in movies like “Mr. Deeds” in 2002 and Wimbledon in 2004.

McEnroe also starred in the movie, Jack & Jill, released in 2011, which included Adam Sandler, Al Pacino, and  Katie Holmes amongst an eclectic cast.

John McEnroe’s Career Earnings

John was a handful on the court with his frustrated outbursts and generally strongly brooding demeanor, at odds with his tremendous skill on the court.

During the course of his tennis career, John McEnroe earned more than $12.5 million in match fees and many times that in endorsements and sponsorship deals.

As his financial details are not public knowledge, there is no way to know just how much he earns each year, but estimates are that it is more than $10 million.

McEnroe, who won seventeen “Grand Slam” championships, including seven singles, nine men’s doubles, and one mixed-doubles, was known for his finesse and volleying abilities.

His obnoxious on-court antics were parlayed into TV adverts and even a song during the 80s, but since his retirement, he’s calmed down considerably.

John McEnroe’s net worth in 2022 is estimated to be $100 Million, but as his financial affairs are a closely guarded secret, this cannot be confirmed.

He was added to the “International Tennis Hall of Fame” in 1999 and was the US national team manager until 2000.

McEnroe resigned after a humiliating defeat to Spain in the Davis Cup, citing scheduling concerns – his brother took over the role when he left.

Personal Life

Before being divorced in 1994, John and actress Tatum O’Neal had two boys, Kevin and Sean, as well as a daughter, Emily.

In the beginning, the couple had joint custody of the children, but McEnroe was given exclusive custody in 1998 as a result of O’Neal’s drug misuse.

John later wed singer Patty Smyth in 1997, and the two of them have two daughters; Anna and Ava.

He got involved in television productions with the 2020 Netflix series “Never Have I Ever”, narrated by McEnroe.

He also appeared in guest roles on Frasier, Curb Your Enthusiasm, 30 Rock, and Saturday Night Live.
