Early Life
David Afrasiab Assad Bakhtiari was born on the 30th of September, 1991, in San Mateo, California.
His older brother Eric Bakhtiari went on to play defensive end at the University of San Diego and for the Tennessee Titans. His father, Karl Bakhtiari, runs a real estate business in California. He attended Junípero Serra High School in San Mateo, California, where he lettered two years in football and lacrosse, being named a team captain during his sophomore year.
Career Overview
David Bakhtiari began his career with the University of Colorado and played for the Buffaloes while majoring in communications. After being redshirted in 2009, he played all 12 games in his first season, starting in eleven. The only game he didn’t start was against Texas Tech, and he still managed 24 snaps during that match. Bakhtiari had the third-most snaps behind offensive tackle Nate Solder and guard Ryan Miller, earning 796.
By the end of his first year, he’d received an honorable mention for Freshman All-American honors and was part of the All-Big 12-Second-team for Academics. Unfortunately, his sophomore season began with a severe knee injury, though he could still play in 11 games.
Before his final season, he was named to the preseason first-team All-Pac-12 Squad and was on watchlists for the Rotary Lombardi Trophy.
The Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers selected David Bakhtiari in the fourth round of the 2013 NFL Draft. During the Packers’ training camp, Bryan Bulaga was injured, and Bakhtiari was put in his place as the starting left tackle. He made his debut in the Packers’ first preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals, and though they lost, he performed well.
Bakhtiari started every game at left tackle, becoming the first rookie to ever do so in Green Bay since 1978. After his rookie season, Bakhtiari began working on his strength to maintain his position, and Bulaga was moved to right tackle.
However, during the 2014 season, he was injured during a match against the Miami Dolphins, but he still played in all 16 games. The Green Bay Packers signed Bakhtiari to a four-year contract in 2016 for $48 million, including a $15 million signing bonus.
Injuries & Setbacks
After becoming the highest-paid offensive lineman in NFL history, things looked positive for David Bakhtiari. On December 21, 2020, he was selected to participate in the 2021 Pro Bowl, but ten days later, he tore his ACL, ending his season. However, despite his injury, Bakhtiari made the 2020 All-Pro Team first team while recuperating. He missed the first six games of the following season due to his injury but was activated on November 10, 2021.
That said, he was then declared inactive, with Aaron Rodgers leading the team for the remainder of the season until the season finale. During that game, he earned 20 snaps in the first half before being relieved by Yosh Nijman. While he was set to play in the Divisional Round against the 49ers, the morning of the game, he was declared inactive once more.
In December 2022, Bakhtiari had an emergency appendectomy and missed Week 13 of the season. During the 2023 season, he was placed on injured reserve with a knee injury that required surgery and missed the remaining games.
