1. It Starts With the Product

If we can learn anything from Jobs, it’s that he was always focused on the product and would do anything to try and get it as perfect as possible. He had a vision of the product he wanted to build, and that’s what he set out to achieve.

Don’t get me wrong, the product is obviously not the only crucial part of creating a successful business, but it’s certainly the foundation for one, and was Job’s primary concern, put above the marketing side of things.

Focus on creating a great product and brand that people just can’t help but be tempted by, and never stop improving it. If you’re product is of a poor or even mediocre quality, it’s not going to stand out to anyone, and there’s only so many sales you can take from polishing it with top marketing techniques.

2. Set Yourself Apart from the Rest

When building the Mac, Apple were determined to be different from the rest, and do things that other computer companies had never done before.

They designed the first home computer where the keyboard was actually detached from the rest of the computer, and they designed the first to have more than one type font, which is where the big controversy of Microsoft stealing their ideas came from.

Apple has shown that setting yourself apart from everybody else is important when trying to stand out in a crowded market, and it’s brought them nothing but success. It’s quite clear that when it comes to new developments and innovation in the personal technology market, Apple are always at the front line.

3. You Have to Persevere

Becoming a successful leader in your field, and building a successful business takes perseverance.

It’s not exactly the easiest thing to do, otherwise everyone would have their own business. Jobs suffered during his journey to building Apple to what it is today. There were some hard times he had to get through, including leaving Apple for a short period.

So no matter how far along the line you may be, how tough things may seem, the key is to just keep persevering. the temptation to quit is highest at the point just before success.

They quit at the one yard line without even realizing it. Can you really afford to quit at that point? And since you have no idea when that point will arise, just never quit what you’re doing and you’ll go far.

4. Quality Goes Further than One Layer

If you didn’t already know that Steve Jobs was absolutely focused on making sure the product was perfect, this says it all. Jobs was a true perfectionist, and he wasn’t willing to cut corners at any stage of the product’s design.

It’s very easy to focus on one specific area of a product and make it as perfect as possible, neglecting some of the other areas.

If you’re going to go to the effort of creating a product that you wish to be successful with, then the quality control needs to be all round, not just on the outside.

5. Never Stop Innovating

Briefly mentioned above, Apple is at the forefront of innovation when it comes to the personal technology market. Jobs was always trying to come up with something new that he could add to give Apple the edge over everyone else.

Innovation is the key to growth, and if you’re unable to innovate in the business environment, it’s very easy for someone else to come along and beat you to it.

6. Trust in Yourself

One of the most famous quotes that Steve Jobs has said, at his Stanford commencement address, was that you can’t connect the dots looking forward, you can only connect them looking backward.

Which means you just have to trust in yourself and have faith that the dots will connect in the future.

If you have the belief that things will work out, then your effort will naturally be much higher, and you’ll work harder.

Whereas without this belief that what you’re doing right now will work out and benefit you later down the line, the motivation to drop your leisure time and keep pushing on with business work will be low…

Okay, so maybe Steve Jobs wasn’t the only one who taught us that you need to love what you do in order to be successful at it; because a lot of the time people will work hard at they don’t like that much.

It just happens to be that there’s a good reward for doing it. And that’s really where most people fall down.

A lot of effort into what they don’t enjoy, wasted time and a high temptation to quit when things get tough.

On the other hand, trying to succeed at something you love, is not that difficult. You’ll do it everyday happily, and naturally get better over time. That voice of “How much have I got left to do?” won’t be inside your head.

Oprah Winfrey has said that she always trusted her gut instinct with any of the major changes in her life, including her T.V show. It’s when you doubt your gut and being to start questioning it with others, that you often end up going against your gut and making the wrong choice.

In business it’s very important that you make the right decisions, and having a little faith in yourself and your gut might make the differences you need.

2. Focus on Helping Others

It’s important to focus on the needs of others, and in particular in business, your potential customers. Products that solve a problem or need that others have are far more popular for obvious reasons, in comparison to those that they may just want.

3. Money Should Not Be Your Priority

Success is much more likely to come your way if you’re in it for the right reasons, and money is not one of them.

The right reason should be because you love what you are doing, because in the end your ultimately happy with how your spending the time you have. Any money that comes from it is just a huge bonus.

To become wealthy is one of the reasons why most people start a business, and that’s still a valid reason to start one, but it shouldn’t be the only reason why you’re doing it.

The love and passion for something motivates people a lot more than money could. And so it’s easier to stick with something you love for long periods, than something you hate but that pays a lot.

4. Learn How to Turn Negatives to Positives

There’s no escaping negative aspects in life sometimes.

You need to be able to turn these negative issues into positives. In other words you need to be able to take your failures or mistakes and learn what you can from. In order to stop them from happening again.

Failure is still experience and should be thought of as getting closer to your dreams in the long run, instead of having to start from scratch.

5. Nothing Worth Having Comes Easy

If you’re expecting it to be easy, it won’t be. Your dreams are dreams for a reason.

The point is that if you expect to become successful in your chosen area, you can’t give up just because you don’t get anywhere within a few months. And you can’t skate by doing the bare minimum.

Go out and meet new people who have the same goals as you. They’re the ones working hard and trying to adopt the same productive habits you have. So you will benefit greatly from spending your time with them.

1. Don’t Be Too Clever

Okay look, we know you’re clever and you have a lot to offer, but trying to be too clever at something so simple can end up ruining things.

Gordon Ramsay explained this when he was talking about food dishes. Trying to add loads of clever touches at the end can ruin a dish.

If you’re a blogger, you’ll probably want to try and add every snazzy widget you can and make the site look as busy as possible.

This is actually quite counter productive. Just stick to the simplistic look of blogs such a and it’ll help people focus on your content more.


2. Know Your Market

Gordon Ramsay says you have to know the market that you’re appealing to. For the restaurant example, if you are opening a business in an area of people that love one food, and you’re offering them another, you’re not going to be as popular.

Know your market and what your customers want, and then use this to produce products that you can tell them they will want! This is the exact strategy that Apple have used with the IPod and it worked beautifully.


3. Ask for Help When you Need it

There’s no point in not asking for help either because you’re too stubborn or too shy to do so. Even if you tell yourself you have all the answers, believe me you don’t.

There are plenty of people out there you have done what you’re now doing, or will be doing it now.

Ask them any questions you have and answer any that they might ask you, help each other out.

In the business world, you should be working as a team to help each other and increase your productivity. If you’re stuck but don’t want to ask anyone, be prepared to be stuck for a lot longer.


4. Believe in What you are Doing. Find your Bollocks.

We talk about this so often, as said in 50 Cent’s and Richard Branson’s rules for success. You need to believe in yourself and push yourself. Don’t just constantly doubt your ideas and your thoughts, have the balls to pursue them.

I don’t know how you can expect to succeed in what you’re doing if you don’t have the guts to be able to actually believe you can become successful and to actually do what it takes to get there.


5. Don’t be Afraid to Talk to People

This sort of ties in with the ask for help part, but you should still be willing to talk to people, whether it be your employees, fellow businesses in your niche and so on.

Networking is a big thing and if you’re not putting yourself out there then how do you expect to be heard and noticed by others. After all, that is how you become successful right?


6. Quality Can Never be Compromised

You should never rush anything just to get it done, or move forward with something when you know it’s not good enough. You don’t win any medals for ‘nearly amazing’. Either what you’re offering is amazing, or it’s not good enough to be amazing.

Not being too concerned with consistently high quality, is where mistakes are made and people are left less satisfied, or even unsatisfied all together. Take the time to do the job properly, or do it again until you get it right.


7. Always Be Getting Better

If you’re not improving then what the hell are you doing?

Just waiting for things to start getting better? Always try and improve yourself and get better at what you are doing. It’s how your business will be able to grow and will mean that you’re able to keep up with any changes in the environment around you.


8. Always Communicate

What’s a business without communication?

Especially when it comes to a team of cooks working in a high profile restaurant. If you didn’t have good communication with those around you, you’d get absolutely slaughtered.

Remember this as it’s incredibly important. Keeping up the level of communication means that you’re always kept in the loop and that you’re always aware of what’s going on around you.


9. Don’t Get Too Ambitious for Your Skills

Again, keep everything nice and simple. If you start to get a little bit too ambitious for a business of your size, you’ll end up spreading yourself out and not be able to keep up a good relative audience.

A good example of this is where you may start to promote a website on various Social Media accounts. Let’s say a Facebook page, a twitter account and a Pinterest wall.

If you just start with one and build on this, you’ll be spending a lot more time on it, become better and marketing with it and be able to build a larger, more engaged audience.

If however, you try to split your time between the three, you might just lose any engagement with your audience and end up sucking at all of them. Nobody wants that.


10. Addition by Subtraction

My economics teacher in sixth form was the first to teach me about the law of diminishing returns, where by as you hire more employees the total output of work will increase until you hire one too many, and they get in each other’s way and productivity starts to drop.

Gordon Ramsay uses the same rule. If you have an employee who’s not able to contribute enough to the job and ends up lowering the businesses productivity, get rid of them, lower your costs and increase your profits.

1. Don’t Start Unless it’s A Passion

Mark explains that you shouldn’t try starting your own company unless it’s something that you love to do. People who start companies just for the money have a very small chance of making their business a success.

If you don’t love what you do, you’ll be less productive when running your business. As well as less willing, and eventually the excitement you had for it will slowly die down.

If you love what you do, you’ll be less likely to have second thoughts when you’re business hasn’t started making any profit yet. For you, it’s an obsession and a passion so you won’t be put off it easily.


2. For Technology, Stick With What You Know

You’ll need computers, systems & software for your start up I’m sure. When it comes down to this, don’t get carried away by the fact that this business new and fresh. For the technology you need, stick to what you prefer and normally use.

Don’t go splashing all your cash on new complicated software when you’ve never used it before. If your preferred technology does what you need it to do, then use it.


3. It All Comes Down to Sales

What good is a business without it making money? Without revenue, it’s just a hobby. The key is turning your hobby into a successful profitable business.

You can be obsessed with figures like traffic, leads, interest, engagement… any of these figures. However, in the end, it all comes down to amount of sales you’re getting and the revenue that your products are bringing in.

All those other measurable numbers are useful; but they don’t have the final say when it comes to the success of your business.

So understand when starting up, how your business is going to be able to make money and what you need to do to get there.


4. No Private Offices

Too many private offices within your company headquarters hinders communication levels. If you keep everything open, employees will be able to communicate better with one another. Which will result in increased morale within your company.

It’ll also give you a good overview on how everyone gets along with their job roles; and help you to spot who might not be the greatest employee for your start up.


5. Hire People that Share Your Passion

If your business is based within a certain niche and you hire people that you know love the niche as well, you know they’ll love working for you.

If your employees are all in a job they love, they’ll be so much more motivated to produce excellent work and to help your business exceed.

It’s also important to note that an employee passionate about the subject at hand will normally do more work than they’re paid for.

They’ll also be coming up with more useful ideas as to how you can innovate and improve different aspects of the business.

They want to do well for you, rather than others without a care in the world who literally just want to do the task and take the salary from you.


6. Make it Fun

When you’re set on pushing your employees to do their best for you and get the job done as efficiently as they can, sometimes stress levels can get high and morale can get quite low.

Marks says that when he was at, they had a company shot called the Kamikaze. Every now and then to reward employees for their continued hard work, they would take them to a bar and buy them all a few too many.


7. Keep the Organization On One Level

When you first start a company, there’s no point having one person reporting back to another, then that person reporting to another person higher up the chain and so on.

Keep it all grounded; at least that way everything will be reported back to you smoothly.

Everybody else will know exactly what their role is and you will be able to save costs. Instead of paying someone to manage a section you could just as easily overview yourself.


8. It’s Not a Passion if You Have an Exit Strategy

If you already have a plan just in case it all goes wrong, then this business is really not an obsession for you. You should be telling yourself that you will make it a success no matter what.

If it comes down to it, then there’s no harm in admitting failure if you’ve given your all and it just doesn’t work out. However, if you already have a plan in case of failure, then it just shows you’re anticipating failure before you’ve even begun your venture.

Will Smith once said;

“There is no reason to have a plan B because it distracts from Plan A.”



There’s definitely some valuable lessons within this article to take away with you. Personally for me, the first rule on the list is the most important when it comes to starting your own business.

You won’t get very far if passion isn’t the main component driving you.
