Introduction

Ricky Rubio is a professional Spanish basketball player.

Rubio plays for the Cleveland Cavaliers of the National Basketball Association.

In 2005, at age 14, he became the youngest player ever to play in the Spanish ACB League and made his EuroLeague debut the following year.

As of May 2024, Ricky Rubio’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $8 Million.

Early Life

Ricky Rubio was born in Spain on the 21st of October, 1990.

Some have compared Rubio to Pete Maravich.

In 2009, the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired the fifth pick in the 2009 NBA draft.

Among the picks were Etan Thomas, Darius Songaila, and Oleksiy Pecherov from the Washington Wizards in exchange for Randy Foye and Mike Miller.

With the 5th pick, Minnesota selected Rubio, making him the first player born in the 1990s to be drafted.

Career

Ricky Rubio started his career with the Spanish ACB League in 2005, playing with DKV Joventut.

He won the Rising Star Award soon after and was named the FIBA Europe Young Player of the Year.

In 2008, Rubio played in the Olympics and won the Mr. Europa Award from Superbasket Magazine in Italy.

Rubio was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves during the 2009 NBA draft but played with FC Barcelona for the following two seasons.

He debuted alongside Kevin Love as a member of the Timberwolves during the 2011 NBA season.

An NBA Superstar

During his first NBA game, Ricky Rubio played for a sold-out crowd of fans at the Target Center, the team’s first sell-out since 2007.

After being named the Western Conference Rookie of the Month, Rubio was drafted to Team Shaquille O’Neil for the Rising Stars challenge.

Unfortunately, not long after, Rubio tore his ACL while defending Kobe Bryant, ending his season prematurely.

Despite this, Rubio still placed second in Rookie of the Year voting, just behind Cleveland Cavaliers guard Kyrie Irving.

Rubio returned to enjoy a successful 2012 season, and in 2013, he tied the Timberwolves record with 17 assists.

The following season, Rubio signed a $65 million contract extension but was ruled out indefinitely after spraining his ankle during a game.

While he was able to return in February, after the season ended, he underwent surgery on his ankle.

Once healed, Rubio had a solid 2015 season and broke his franchise record the following season, earning 19 assists.

Switching Teams

Ricky Rubio was traded to the Utah Jazz in 2017 and, after a single season, signed a three-year contract with the Phoenix Suns for $51 million.

In 2019, he became the first Suns player to earn at least 20 points, 10 assists, and 7 steals during a game since Kevin Johnson in 1996.

Rubio returned to the Timberwolves in November 2020 before being traded again to the Cleveland Cavaliers in August 2021.

While he started strong for Cleveland, in December, he tore his left ACL in a season-ending injury.

In February 2022, he was traded to the Indiana Pacers, though he never played due to still recovering from his previous injury.

By July, he was back with the Cavaliers on a three-year contract for $18 million, and in January 2023, he returned to the court.

However, in August, Rubio announced he was pausing his career to focus on his mental health and ultimately announced his retirement in January 2024.

That said, Rubio wasn’t content to be one of the wealthiest NBA players in the world and enjoy watching the game from the sidelines.

Instead, Rubio signed with FC Barcelona again in February 2024 for the remainder of the season.

Although he hasn’t stated whether or not he will make a permanent return to the court, his fans are certainly keeping their fingers crossed for a comeback!

As of May 2024, Ricky Rubio’s net worth is estimated to be roughly $8 Million.
