Davis Bertans Facts

  • Davis Bertans started his professional career in Latvia playing for the ASK Kadeti II.
  • He was a Slovenian Cup champion three times consecutively from 2010 to 2012.
  • In the 2011 NBA draft, Bertans was selected by the Indiana Pacers but was immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs.
  • Bertans officially signed with the Spurs in 2016, officially beginning his NBA career.
  • He signed an $80 million contract with the Washington Wizards in 2020.

Early Life

Davis Bertans was born November 12, 1992, in Valmiera, Latvia. His father, Dainis, was a professional basketball player, and his mother, Dina, was a sports teacher and former professional rower.

Although not much is known about his childhood, given his parents’ athletic ventures, it is evident that he was involved with sports from a young age.

When he was 16 in 2008, he played for the BAA Riga in Latvia’s second division. He also spent time with ASK Riga in the top division from 2008-2009.

In 2010, he signed a multi-year deal with Union Olimpija, a Slovenian club that he remained with until 2012.

While signed with Union Olimpija, he was selected by the Indiana Pacers as their 42nd overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft.

However, his rights were immediately traded to the San Antonio Spurs, along with the rights to Kawhi Leonard and George Hill.

Despite his selection in the draft, Bertans stayed in Europe and, in 2012, signed a three-year contract with the Serbian club Partizan Belgrade.

In 2014, he signed another three-year contract with the Spanish club Laboral Kutxa Baskonia, and in 2016 he agreed to a contract buyout.

Bertans joined the San Antonio Spurs in 2016 and made his debut with them in October, becoming the fourth Spurs rookie to have earned 35 three-pointers and 15 blocks in a season.

In 2018, he re-signed with the San Antonio Spurs for two years but was traded in 2019 to the Washington Wizards in a multi-team deal.

Bertans stayed with the Wizards until 2022 when he was traded along with Spencer Dinwiddie to the Dallas Mavericks, who he has continued to play for since.

Davis Bertans’ Career Earnings

Despite not being as wealthy as David Robinson or Kevin Garnett, Davis Bertans has done well for himself financially since joining the NBA.

Since 2016, his salary has been quickly increasing, causing his overall net worth to skyrocket.

  • From 2016 to 2019, as a member of the San Antonio Spurs, Bertans’ salary increased from $724k to $7.2 million.
  • For the 2020-21 season, his salary increased to $15 million.
  • After joining the Dallas Mavericks in 2022, his salary has increased further to $16 million.
  • His current contract with the Mavericks is for five years and $80 million, with $69 million guaranteed.

It may take a while for him to become one of the richest NBA players in the world, but it is an honor he may very well achieve in the future.

We certainly expect to see his salary continue to increase as he continues playing professionally.

Personal Life

Davis Bertans married Anna Sonka in 2017, and together they have two children, a daughter, Mila, who was born in 2018, and a son, who was born in 2021.
