Emmy Rossum was born in New York City on the 12th of September, 1986.

Rossum’s parents separated when her mother was pregnant with her. She identifies as Jewish and has stated that her mother instilled her with a Jewish code of ethics and morals.

Rossum has always been interested in acting and singing since she was a kid. Rossum attended to the Spence School which was a private school in Manhattan. She received her high school diploma at the age of 15 and began her acting career when she was 1997.



Rossum began her acting career in 1997 when she starred in Law & Order, as Alison Martin.

That following year she bagged a role in the long-running daytime soap opera ‘As the World Turns’. Rossum also played a guest role in ‘Snoops’ and ‘Genius’ which earned her a Young Artist Award nomination for Best Performance in a movie.

In 2000, Rossum portrayed the role of young Audrey Hepburn in ‘The Audrey Hepburn Story’ which gave her a lot of attention from directors and producers. The same year she made her debut on big screen with the movie ‘Songcatcher’ where she played an Appalachian orphan.

Rossum starred in the apocalyptic film ‘The Day after Tomorrow’ which was much appreciated and her acting impressed many, she starred as the main character Laura alongside Jack Gyllenhaal.

Eventually, Rossum bagged the coveted role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s film ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ where her perfect portrayal earned her a Golden Globe Award nomination.

In 2006, Rossum performed as Juliet of Willam Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’. She followed up another role as Dragonball in ‘Dragonball Evolution’ and also served as one of the members of Broadway’s 24 Hour Plays.
