Early Life

Mats Arne Olof Wilander was born August 22, 1964, in Vaxjo, Sweden.

Although not much is known about his childhood, it is evident that he was remarkably skilled at tennis from a young age.

As a junior player, Wilander caught the attention of tennis fans when he won the French Open junior title, the European under-16 and under-18 championships, and the Miami Orange Bowl under-16 title.

Having succeeded so much in junior tournaments, in 1980, at the age of 16, Wilander made his official professional debut.

Career

Wilander played his first professional match in Bastad, Sweden, in 1980, and two years later, in ’82, he stunned the world when he won the French Open.

This victory earned him the Pierre de Coubertin World Fair Play Trophy and the Svenska Dagbladet Gold Medal.

The following year, Wilander won his second Grand Slam title at the Australian Open, as well as two Grand Prix Championship series titles.

In 1984, Wilander retained his Australian Open title and won three additional tournaments, including his third Championships series title, finishing the year ranked world no. 4.

Wilander rose to no. 2 in the rankings in 1986 when he won the men’s doubles title at Wimbledon and his fourth Grand Prix Championship series title.

Mats Wilander reached the peak of his career in 1988 when he won his third Australian Open, becoming the only player to win on both grass and hard courts.

The same year, Wilander won the French Open and the US Open, which made him the number 1 player in the world.

Unfortunately, from 1989 to 1996, Wilander’s performance began to suffer, and by the end of 1990, his ranking had fallen to world no. 41.

During the 1995 season, Wilander failed a drug test and was forced to return his prize money while also receiving a three-month suspension.

In 1996, Wilander called it quits, retiring from the sport to move on to commentating.
