In 1966, Bernstein joined the Washington Post. After a few years, he would bring the Post more attention. In 1972, Bernstein was assigned to cover a break-in at the Watergate office with Bob Woodward. Bernstein and Woodward’s discoveries led to further investigations of Nixon. In 1974, Nixon resigned to avoid facing impeachment. The same year, two months before Nixon resigned, Bernstein and Woodward released the book ‘All the President’s Men’.

The following year, the book was turned into a movie starring Dustin Hoffman and Robert Redford. Bernstein and Woodward published their second book, ‘The Final Days’, in 1976. He left the Washington Post in 1977 and began investigating the secret cooperation between the CIA and American media during the Cold War.

Watergate Scandal

Bernstein has faced several legal issues during his career, most notably his reporting of the Watergate political scandal. On June 17, 1972, police caught five men who were breaking into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate development in Washington.

On September 15 of the same year, the men were charged with conspiracy, burglary, and wiretapping offences. It was later discovered that they were gathering secret political information for President Nixon’s campaign. At the time, Bernstein and reporter Bob Woodward were working for The Washington Post. They were trying to get an exclusive on the scandal, so they contacted some of the grand jurors to ask about the testimony and proceedings of the hearing.

As a result, the judge in charge of the hearing considered charging them with attempting to violate grand jury secrecy. Bernstein and Woodward sought help from The Washington Post’s lawyer, who argued that reporters cannot be charged just for trying to learn about grand jury proceedings. Fortunately, the judge agreed with his argument and decided not to press any further charges against Bernstein and Woodward.

Apartmentgate Lawsuit

Several years after the Watergate incident, in 1986, Bernstein was involved in another legal dispute known as Apartmentgate. His Manhattan landlady, Guida De Carvalhosa, filed a civil lawsuit to evict Bernstein from her New York home, alleging that he hadn’t paid his $4,000 monthly rent for June. She went on to claim that he regularly caused disturbances, played loud music at night, and hosted noisy parties. Bernstein responded by threatening to seek damages against her, arguing that the apartment required serious repairs and posed safety concerns.

Bernstein went on to say that the property had faulty plumbing, and a bedroom ceiling had collapsed, almost injuring his son. He acknowledged that he had paid only $1,000 in rent in June in protest of the living conditions. However, his landlady admitted that she had returned the payment and also doubted whether the upcoming July payment would be made. Following the initial dispute, there are no public records indicating the lawsuit ended; therefore, it’s possible the case was settled privately outside of court.

$13 Million Defamation Lawsuit

Over 20 years later, in early 2005, investment adviser Jeffrey Silver filed a $13 million lawsuit against Bernstein and his wife. He claimed that the couple had spread lies about him after a fight over Bernstein’s wife, whom Silver had previously dated. He had allegedly continued to see her even after her marriage to Bernstein. Despite the lawsuit receiving a lot of attention, there is no public record indicating whether it went to trial, so it was likely settled privately or dismissed.
