Early Life
Mary Tyler Moore was born in Brooklyn, New York City on the 29th of December, 1936.
She was born to George and Marjorie Moore. Moore was the oldest of three children. When she was at the age of 8 the family moved to Los Angeles. Mary was raised as a Catholic, and she attended St. Rose of Lime until she reached the third grade.
Moore later attended Saint Ambrose School in Los Angeles followed by Immaculate Heart High School in California.
Career
Moore started her career as a dancer when she was 17 years old.
She starred as Happy Hotpoint on Hotpoint appliances in TV commercials during the 1950s series Ozzie and Harriet which was her first job.
Her first television role was in 1957 when she played a mysterious telephone receptionist in ‘Richard Diamond, Private Detective’.
In 1960 she guest starred in two episodes of the William Bendix-Doug McClure NBC series. A year later Moore got her big parts in movies and television, including ‘Bourbon Street Beat’, ‘Surfside Six’, ‘Steve Canyon’, Hawaiian Eye’, ‘Thriller’, and ‘Lock-Up’.
She made her debut in her first movie ‘X-15’ which is a fictionalized account of the X-15 research rocket plane program that also starred Charles Bronson and David McLean.
Moore and her husband Grant Tinker founded MTM Enterprises in 1969 which produced ‘The Mary Tyler Moore Show’ and other films and television shows.
In 1981 she was nominated for the Academy Awards and she won the Golden Globe Awards for Best Motion Picture Actress. Between 2001 and 2005 she guest starred on ‘The Ellen Show’, Hot in Cleveland’ and ‘That 70s Show’.
Moore appeared in a number of television movies including ‘Run a Crooked Mile’, ‘Rhoda’, ‘Stolen Babies’ and ‘The Gin Game Mary’.
