Questions to Ask Yourself for a Happier Life

2017 is right around the corner people, and it’s the perfect opportunity to sit down and reflect on the past year of your lives.

What have you achieved?

What haven’t you been able to do?

What regrets do you have?

What do you want to achieve in 2015?

Those are definitely a few questions to ask yourself, but they’re not the ones I’m here to talk about.

You don’t need a new year to become motivated and embrace sudden change, but it gives you exactly that through a reminder of time passing like a bolt of lightning.

6 Questions to Ask Yourself For A Happier Life

Today I have 6 questions for you of which I’ve already asked myself this year, and though they may seem obvious, the answers that you find yourselves with may be most surprising and unexpected.

I encourage everyone to ask themselves these questions and actually write down your answers, so you can’t cheat yourself and morph your answers to exactly what you want them to be.

1. Am I actually happy right now?

It may sound like an obvious question, but have you actually sat down and thought about it?

Many of us think we’re relatively happy, and yet we’re stressed, in a career where our only motivation is money, and living the same day 365 times a year.

You may not be unhappy, but if you think of yourself as a bit of a flat line, neither on one side of the other, then there’s still some parts of you that you’re not content with.

It’s a question than none of us ever ask ourselves, but it’s the one that all of us need to take the time to think about. Ask yourself and you may actually be surprised with your thoughts on the question.

2. What are my goals in life?

Believe it or not, many people don’t have goals in life, no matter how basic they could potentially be.

When you give yourself goals to aim for and achieve, you open yourself up to the world of happiness because you’ve now given yourself purpose in life. Something to reach for. Something that you’re happy to give up your time for.

That’s an important key to happiness, rather than just getting up everyday and feeling partially empty.

Sit down with a pen and notepad, and write all your goals down. It doesn’t matter whether they’re related to your career, self development, relationships, experiences etc.

Just write them all down because they don’t become real, specific and fixed in place until you actually write them down. Otherwise they’ll remain as good ideas and nothing more.

3. When was the last time I did something new?

Remember the point I made above about living the same day 365 times a year. How many of you do exactly that?

Whenever you start to live the same day too many times in a row, you subconsciously think that your time is being wasted and could be put to better use, but you don’t quite have the motivation to start doing something new.

The more new things you experience and try, the better sense of fulfillment you gain in life, and the happier you become.

Especially towards the end of your life when you find yourself looking back and you’re proud, because you’ve done pretty much everything you’ve wanted to do; you’ve experienced it, you’ve lived it and now you can just sit back and relax.

The other half of people, actually the majority of people, look back on their lives and they have nothing but regret because they didn’t use the time they had wisely. So many dreams that remain un-lived, so many goals that remain un-achieved.

4. What are my passions?

Are you even confident you’ve found your passion in life?

Or are you still searching for it? If you’re still unsure and still searching for your true passion in life, check out a post I wrote on Motivation Grid, titled “6 Reasons Why You Haven’t Found Your Passion Yet“.

A passion gives us purpose, happiness, and a truly enlightening way to spend our precious time. Do you have a passions? And are you dedicating yourself to it?

Perhaps at the moment you’re stuck doing something completely different. Something that you really don’t want to be doing for the rest of your life, am I right?

Well now that you’ve answered the question, go out and make it happen. Find your passion and dedicate yourself entirely to it. There is no better sense of fulfillment.

5. Is there something about my life that I hate?

Own up, if there really is a particular part of your life that you hate, then change it. Do whatever you have to do in order to correct that area of your life and improve it.

The majority of people do have something about their life that they hate. For most of us it’s normally our careers as this area of life is so challenging, and not to mention hugely important.

If you feel like you are in the wrong career, then don’t continue to get sucked in. Start working towards getting out of that career and into one you love.

6. If tomorrow was my last day, would I have any regrets?

The last question you need to ask yourself for a happier life, is that if tomorrow was your last day, would you have any regrets? Would there be anything that you regret not doing? Would all your time have been used up wisely and not a moment wasted?

I recently watched a motivational speech by Les Brown on YouTube, and he asked the audience that if they were given back all of their lifetime to start over, how many of them could get further than they are now.

Almost everyone in the room raised their hands, as if to say that they know they’ve wasted time and not used it to the best of their capabilities.

Unfortunately we won’t be getting all of our time back, so we need to make the most of the time that we have left.

Summary

Ask yourself these questions, and if you’ve given yourself honest answers that you can work on, you’ll be on your way to a happier life.

Does anybody have any questions to add to the list?
