Best Platforms for Creating an Online Store

Have you ever tried creating an online store?

More and more people are now turning to the internet in order to start their own business, and that means eCommerce stores are on the rise.

More importantly, it means that eCommerce platforms are gaining demand at a magnificent pace. Which begs the question;

Which platform do you choose when creating an online store for the first time?

Top 10 Platforms for Creating an Online Store

The good news is that there are plenty of options available to you. It doesn’t matter what your budget may be, how big your store will be, what type of products you want to offer – there are options to accommodate you.

If your answer to my original question is yes, and you have previously created or looked to create your own eCommerce store, then you probably will have heard of some of the names I’m about to mention…

Check out the 10 best platforms for creating an online store.

1. Goodsie

Creating an Online Store with Goodsie

First on the list is Goodsie, which is an incredibly flexible platform for building your own eCommerce store. Every plan at Goodsie includes the essential features required, such as your own domain and unlimited web hosting, as well as the online store builder with a drag and drop composer.

Other features include payment gateways and templates, as well as customer support. Their most expensive plan is $250 per month, and includes an arsenal of additional features that are great for email marketing and multiple accounts for businesses.

Pricing: Starts from $25/month

Example: OriginalGrabBag.com

2. Shopify

creating an online store with shopify

Shopify is an excellent platform for anyone looking to create an online store, regardless of whether you’re just a small business or a large enterprise. It’s also the platform that I have the most experience with.

Depending on your needs, Shopify has a tonne of different themes you can choose from, shopping cart integration, payment gateways, product management and hosting features.

It’s pretty much all inclusive, but has a few pricing options that differ in terms of storage and additional features. However, pretty much everything you need to create a full operational online store is included within the basic version.

Pricing: Starts from $29/month

Example: DodoCase.com

3. Squarespace

creating an online store with squarespace

Squarespace is perfect for anyone with a tight budget, but still looking to create an online store. The features that are included might not be as extensive as some of the other platforms on this list, but the essentials are all there for a great price.

Not only can you design your own eCommerce store with Squarespace, but it’s also a viable option for any other type of website you might be interested in building.

The disadvantage of Squarespace is the limited range of features included compared with the likes of perhaps Shopify or Goodsie.

Pricing: Starts at $8/month

Example: DarrenBooth.com

4. SupaDupa

creating an online store with supadupa

SupaDupa loves showing off the capabilities of their platform, through tonnes of companies who use them for their online stores.

They offer 6 different plans, with some rather unusual price points. There is a free plan, but the features included aren’t really enough for even the smallest of companies.

So it’s probably best that you only use the free plan as a trial to see the possibilities SupaDupa can provide for you.

If you’re going to opt for SupaDupa, I’d recommend diving straight into the ‘business’ plan, which covers the major features of most other eCommerce platforms, yet at a rather competitive price.

Pricing: FREE (Ranges from £6 to £99/month)

Example: Mury

5. Flying Cart

creating an online store with flying cart

Flying Cart offers all the great design features you’d expect, with your own domain/hosting, and inventory/customer management.

The essential features are included within the first couple of plans available. The only problem is that for larger stores, Flying Cart might not be a viable option. The reason for this is that the most expensive plan is $349.99/month, which lets you have up to 20,000 products.

Pricing: Starts from $9.99/month

Example: StacySterling.com

6. BigCommerce

creating an online store with bigcommerce

Much like many of the other big names on this list, BigCommerce sets you up with a custom domain and hosting account, and flexible design tools in order to design a beautiful looking store.

Their support includes marketing tools and analytics to help you see what’s working and help promote the store to your target market.

Whilst their cheapest plan may be $29.95 per month, this includes unlimited products, storage and bandwidth. Which will stop you from running into problems later down the line when you start to expand.

Pricing: Starts from $29.95/month

Example: TorieandHoward.com

7. Volusion

creating an online store with volusion

Volusion is one of the most popular eCommerce building platforms, and has a wide range of pricing options to suit anybody’s budget.

Volusion has pretty much everything that all the other top platforms have, however the different plans really do push it over the edge. The four plans; mini, plus, pro and premium, range from $15 to $135 per month.

Pricing: Starts at $15/month

Example: CustomControllerzz.com

8. Etsy

creating an online store with etsy

Etsy is different to the majority of the platforms on this list for several reasons. The first is that your limited to selling handmade items, vintage goods and similar, eg. T-shirts.

That’s a big downside, but if you fall into this market, Etsy may just be perfect for you. It’s free to set up a store, and you only pay a small fee per each item you sell.

You’re also immediately connected to the Etsy network as a store owner, which means people can access your products from searching directly on Etsy. For those who might struggle with the marketing side of things, this can be a godsend.

If the above sounds like what you’re looking for, then look no further.

Pricing: FREE

Example: PatentPrints

9. Wix

creating an online store with wix

Since Wix is a UK based company, it may not be as well known to the majority of people. Yet you definitely shouldn’t rule it out. Wix is a great and affordable platform for building your own website.

The flexibility within the design functionality of Wix might not be up to the standard of that of Volusion, Shopify, Goodsie etc. However, for anybody looking to start a small business, the prices are ridiculously affordable. Their most expensive plan is just £10.10 per month.

Pricing: Starts from £2.55/month

Example: 3Daly.net

10. Airsquare

creating an online store with airsquare

Last on the list is Airsquare. They don’t give you too much info on what’s included within their platform until you hit the pricing screen unfortunately.

All of their plans include the essential features needed to create an online store, however you can rule the “mini” plan out as it doesn’t let you sell products…

The good news is they give you a 30 day trial to suss everything out and see if you can make the platform work for you.

Pricing: Starts from £15/month (excluding the ‘Mini’ plan)

Example: LoveThyCurry.co.nz
