Introduction

John Lasseter is a well-known screenwriter, animator, and director with an estimated net worth of $100 Million.

This profile covers our extensive research into John Lasseter’s net worth, Pixar salary, additional income sources, and highest-grossing films.

Quick Facts

  • Earned a $2.5 million per year base salary as Executive VP of Pixar
  • Total compensation: approximately $31.4 million from his ten-year contract
  • Received a $4.94 million signing bonus in 2001
  • Received approximately $15 million worth of Disney stock options in 2006

Pixar Contracts

John Lasseter’s career differs from that of most other screenwriters and film directors, since he built his wealth as an employee, not from backend cuts of his films’ gross revenue and box-office profits. He’s best known for having served as the chief creative officer at Pixar Animation Studios.

The studio was initially formed as the Graphics Group in 1979 by George Lucas and Lucasfilm, before Steve Jobs acquired it in the mid-1980s. After the acquisition, Jobs partnered with Edwin Catmull and Alvy Ray Smith to launch Pixar Animation Studios.

In 2001, John Lasseter was appointed as the Executive Vice President – Creative at Pixar. He signed a ten-year contract with the company, which paid him an annual salary of $2.5 million, a $4.94 million signing bonus, and additional bonuses and stock options. Therefore, while he technically didn’t receive a cut of the films’ profits, he did receive various incentives tied to box-office performance. The contract also stated that Lasseter’s annual salary would increase by 5% each year, and he would receive 1 million shares of the company’s common stock.

Disney Acquisition

In 2006, The Walt Disney Company acquired Pixar Animation Studios for roughly $7.4 billion, and instead of cashing in, Lasseter exchanged his shares for Disney stock options. At the time, Bloomberg reported that Lasseter held 1.12 million shares in Pixar, which were converted to 2.58 million shares in Disney. This would have been worth roughly $14.86 million.

While the same number of shares would technically be worth more than $250 million today, it’s likely that Lasseter exercised options at various times and sold some of his shares along the way. However, it’s highly likely that receiving shares in the company accounts for the bulk of his net worth.

Now then, let’s discuss his annual salary. As we mentioned, Lasseter earned $2.5 million per year, with an annual increase of 5% each year over a ten-year period. Assuming his contract played out exactly as structured, Lasseter would have earned approximately $31.44 million over the ten-year period, as follows:

YearEarnings
2001$2,500,000
2002$2,625,000
2003$2,756,250
2004$2,894,063
2005$3,038,766
2006$3,190,704
2007$3,350,239
2008$3,517,751
2009$3,693,638
2010$3,878,320
Total$31,444,731

Bear in mind that his original contract could have been terminated early and renegotiated, particularly when Pixar was acquired by Disney.

Real Estate

In April 1996, John Lasseter paid $250,000 for a 5,133-square-foot home in Sonoma, California. The four-bedroom, four-bathroom property sits on 0.5 acres of land and was built in 1994. Lasseter owned the house for roughly thirteen years, eventually selling it for $2.15 million at the end of 2009. That’s almost a 10X on his initial investment.

Steven Spielberg has been a billionaire for over three decades now. He was first listed on the Forbes Billionaire Index in 1994, after earning $165 million that year and $170 million the year prior. In recent years, Spielberg hasn’t slowed down and still often earns upwards of $100 million per year. Forbes placed his fortune at approximately $3.5 billion in 2016. From 2017 to 2022, his net worth fluctuated between $3.6 billion and $3.7 billion. In the past four years or so, Spielberg’s wealth has almost doubled to $7.1 billion.

Film Earnings

Given the sheer amount of revenue that Steven Spielberg’s films have generated at the box office, you’d expect him to have been well-paid for his work. One of the primary reasons behind Spielberg becoming the world’s richest film director is that he always preferred negotiating for backend points and taking less money upfront.

His earliest known salary was $1.5 million for directing Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark in the early 1980s. He also earned a percentage of the gross profits, but we don’t know exactly how much he was compensated overall.

Jurassic Park Earnings

When Spielberg directed the first Jurassic Park film in 1993, he again accepted a lower salary to secure a percentage of the backend. Reports suggest that he may have earned $250 million from the film in total.

Several years later, in 1997, he earned an estimated $150 million from The Lost World: Jurassic Park, and in 2001, he reportedly earned $72 million from Jurassic Park III. This would bring Spielberg’s total compensation from the trilogy to roughly $472 million. After adjusting each payday for inflation, it equates to $1.02 billion. That’s more than a billion dollars in today’s currency from just three films.

Additional Film Salaries

Over the last decade or two, some of Spielberg’s known salaries include a $20 million paycheck from War Horse (2011) and $10 million from West Side Story (2021).

Highest-Grossing Films

If you perform a quick search for Steven Spielberg’s total box office gross online, you’ll probably see a figure in the region of $10-$11 billion. However, that figure only accounts for his directorial roles, and not his credits as an executive producer. While Spielberg technically didn’t direct the Jurassic World films, he did receive producer credits, and thus, we’ve included those films in the list.

Given that the four films released thus far have grossed a combined $4.9 billion worldwide, including them has an enormous effect on Spielberg’s box office total. By our count, his films have grossed more than $16 billion globally.

As for which films made his top ten, five belong to the Jurassic franchise, including the original 1993 Jurassic Park, which has since grossed $1.1 billion worldwide. Three of the films are from the Transformers franchise, including Revenge of the Fallen (2009), Dark of the Moon (2011), and Age of Extinction (2014), which grossed a combined $3 billion.

Here’s a complete list of Steven Spielberg’s ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. Jurassic World – $1.67 billion (2015)
  2. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – $1.31 billion (2018)
  3. Transformers: Dark of the Moon – $1.12 billion (2011)
  4. Jurassic Park – $1.1 billion (1993)
  5. Transformers: Age of Extinction – $1.1 billion (2014)
  6. Jurassic World Dominion – $1 billion (2022)
  7. Jurassic World Rebirth – $872.5 million (2025)
  8. Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith – $868 million (2005)
  9. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen – $836 million (2009)
  10. E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial – $797 million (1982)

Divorce Settlement

Steven Spielberg married his first wife, Amy Irving, in 1985 and had a son named Max Samuel Spielberg. Unfortunately, just three years later, Irving filed for divorce. This divorce was heavily discussed in the media because, despite signing a prenup before marriage, the couple’s divorce became one of the most expensive in history. At the time, Spielberg was worth approximately $200 million, and Irving walked away from the marriage with half of it, receiving a $100 million settlement.

Bear in mind that their divorce was finalized in 1989. Adjusted for inflation, Irving’s $100 million settlement would be worth approximately $262 million in today’s dollars.

Real Estate

Since the 1980s, Steven Spielberg has made substantial investments in real estate, and many of them have earned him impressive profits.

According to our research, Spielberg’s earliest known property purchase was a 7,600-square-foot beachfront home in Malibu, California. He purchased the house in October 1989, though there are conflicting reports on how much it cost him, especially on realtor websites, which seem to list multiple transactions occurring on the same day. It appears that he paid $3.38 million, though we can’t say for certain, given that we can see four more entries:

  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $2,687,500
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $135,000
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $537,500
  • Oct 17, 1989 – Sold: $675,000

In any case, the property features eight bedrooms, ten bathrooms, an outdoor pool, a small tennis court, a hot tub, a sauna, and a theatre room. Spielberg returned the property to the market in June 2015, selling it for $21 million. During his ownership, his total property taxes couldn’t have been any more than $2 million, making this an impressive investment.

Spielberg also owned a smaller beachfront property in Malibu, which he purchased for $6 million in February 1990. He allegedly sold the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home for just $4.5 million sometime later, incurring a significant loss.

Introduction

Francis Ford Coppola is an American professional film director and producer with an estimated net worth of $400 Million.

In this profile, we’ll discuss our research on Francis Ford Coppola’s net worth, film earnings, box-office successes, and real estate investments.

Quick Facts

  • Reportedly earned $7.2 million upfront from The Godfather trilogy
  • Potentially earned $28 million from the 1973 film, American Graffiti

The Godfather Earnings

Francis Ford Coppola’s earnings increased significantly over the course of his career, picking up steam after the international success of The Godfather trilogy. He went from earning $10 a week in the 1960s to taking home seven-digit salaries for his later movies, and other business ventures further increased his earning capacity.

According to reports, Coppola’s earliest recorded paycheck was just $175,000 for directing the 1972 film The Godfather. Following this, he reportedly earned $1 million from Part II in 1974. It wasn’t until the third and final installment in the trilogy that his salary began to increase dramatically. Coppola earned $6 million upfront for The Godfather Part III, plus a percentage of the box-office gross.

All things considered, Francis earned roughly $7.2 million upfront for The Godfather trilogy, before accounting for additional back-end compensation from the third film.

American Graffiti Payday

Aside from The Godfather, Coppola received a 20% cut of the gross revenue from American Graffiti, released in 1973. The film was produced on a budget of just $770,000, but grossed an astonishing $140.5 million at the box office.

In fact, Universal Pictures had initially set the budget at $600,000 and was reluctant to increase it. So much so that Coppola even offered to buy the film’s rights for $777,000. As it turned out, American Graffiti was the best-performing film of Coppola’s career, in terms of ROI. Assuming he received a 20% share of the gross revenue, Francis would have earned $28 million. Bear in mind, this was in the early 1970s. Adjusted for inflation, it would equate to approximately $211.3 million in today’s currency.

Additional Film Earnings

The only other known film paycheck of Francis Ford Coppola’s was $2.5 million upfront for directing The Cotton Club (1984). He also received an unknown percentage of the gross profits. Unfortunately, the film absolutely bombed at the box office, grossing just $25.9 million while costing $58 million to produce. In other words, he didn’t get any backend compensation.

Highest-Grossing Movies

Here’s a complete list of Francis Ford Coppola’s ten highest-grossing movies:

  1. The Godfather – $250 million (1972)
  2. Bram Stoker’s Dracula – $216 million (1992)
  3. Sleepy Hollow – $206 million (1999)
  4. The Godfather Part III – $137 million (1990)
  5. Lost in Translation – $119 million (2003)
  6. American Graffiti – $115 million (1973)
  7. Frankenstein – $112 million (1994)
  8. Apocalypse Now – $105 million (1979)
  9. The Good Shepherd – $100 million (2006)
  10. Don Juan DeMarco – $69 million (1994)

Real Estate

In September 1992, Francis Ford Coppola paid $425,000 for a 1,931-square-foot, three-bedroom, four-bathroom home in Los Angeles, California. The property was initially built in 1922, and Coppola purchased it for his daughter-in-law and granddaughter, Gia Coppola, to live in. Coppola’s son and Gia’s father, Gian-Carlo, died before she was born. Francis sold this home to Jacqueline Getty for $1 million in October 2013.

Introduction

William Friedkin was an American professional film director, screenwriter, and producer with an estimated net worth of $70 Million.

In this profile, we’ll outline all our research into William Friedkin’s net worth, film earnings, highest-grossing flicks, and the estate he left behind.

Quick Facts

  • Potentially earned $20 million in compensation from The Exorcist
  • Filed a $10 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. in 2001
  • Died from heart failure and pneumonia in August 2023
  • Assets included a 10,043-square-foot Bel-Air mansion worth $18 million

The Exorcist Earnings

Widely regarded as one of the most notable, if not the most notable, films of William Friedkin’s career, The Exorcist was released in 1973. It grossed an impressive $430.9 million at the global box office against a budget of just $11 million. Bear in mind that $431 million in 1973 was an enormous amount of money. If we were to adjust for inflation, this figure would be the equivalent of $3.17 billion in today’s dollars.

According to reports, Friedkin received a director’s fee of $250,000 for working on the film, plus a percentage of the film’s backend. A lawsuit filed almost three decades later by Friedkin claims that his backend was 10% of the film’s profits. Based on the box office figures, after theatres took their cut, the film potentially profited in the ballpark of $200 million. However, that excludes marketing costs.

In other words, William Friedkin could have potentially made $20 million from the original 1973 flick. This figure is a rough estimate, and his actual earnings from the film have never been disclosed to the public.

Warner Bros. Lawsuit

In 2000, Warner Bros. re-released The Exorcist on cable television, with networks like CBS paying $1.5 million for the syndication rights. This was allegedly just 25% of the film’s true market value, but they were given a favorable rate due to Warner Bros.’ relationship with Turner Television Network.

As a result of the re-release, William Friedkin and William Blatty, the film’s screenwriter, filed a lawsuit against Warner Bros. in 2001. Blatty reportedly received 39% of the profits from the original 1973 film. In the suit, the duo alleged that Warner had failed to pay them the full profit participation they were owed. The owed sums were derived from VHS sales, TV licensing, streaming, and merchandising revenues.

Blatty and Friedkin were seeking $10 million in compensation, with Friedkin presumably asking for $2 million or thereabouts, given his lower percentage. The lawsuit was settled privately two years later, with the final outcome never being disclosed to the public.

Divorces

William Friedkin was married four times and divorced three times. His first marriage was to the French actress Jeanne Moreau in 1977, which lasted just three years. In the early 1980s, Friedkin married British actress Lesley-Anne Down, and this, again, was just a three-year marriage. Towards the end of the decade, he married an American journalist, Kelly Lange, but they were together for only three years. There were never any public reports regarding potential settlements, spousal support, or the division of assets during these divorces.

Friedkin’s final marriage was to the American film director, Sherry Lansing. The couple tied the knot in 1991 and were together for almost three decades until his death from heart failure in 2023.

Real Estate

In October 2005, William Friedkin and his wife paid $15 million for a 10,043-square-foot, six-bedroom, seven-bathroom mansion in Bel-Air, California. This property sits on a secluded hilltop, spanning 5.24 acres. It also features various amenities, including a sizeable outdoor pool and a full-size tennis court. According to recent estimates, this home is currently valued at $18 million and is still owned by Friedkin’s wife, Sherry. He also once owned a sixteen-bedroom apartment located on Park Avenue.
